Bill Schechner, Bay Area TV News Anchor/Reporter Passes; Stints at KPIX/NBC News --(Did Bye-Bye With Linda Ellerbee) Video

LONGTIME BAY AREA TV NEWS journalist, Bill Schechner, has died after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Schechner spent a good deal of his career at KPIX in the 80's/90's and early 2000's--both as anchor and reporter. He also did commentary and political reporting.

After PIX, Mr. Schecher had a brief stint for NBC News --working as an anchor on "OverNight."

Here's a clip in 1983 with Mr. Schechner and Ms. Linda Ellerbee on last broadcast of "Overnight."

  1. Schechner was a damned good reporter, and a decent news reader. Current news reporters would do well to watch his news clips, he did it well, effortlessly, without gratuitous emotion.

  6. Bill came to California in 1970 to work at KPFA and later joined the amazing crew at KQED Newsroom. That's the rest of the story. Also, he was a fine pal.

  8. "Overnight" was the bomb! It was smart and hip and managed to break free of the typical TV news mold.
Ellerbee would push the boundaries & Bill was her straight man. Loved that newscast. RIP

  9. Overnight was sooooo good. Bill's wry sense of humor was perfect for it, and extremely unusual for a news show back then. RIP

  12. It seems like CNN could find a niche for their 9 PM hour by applying the Overnight model to 2023 news: straight up news, presented with wit. I'd watch it, and I'm still in the demo that advertisers want.

  13. I had the great honor and pleasure to meet Bill when he worked at KPIX. It was at a MacWorld conference in SF many years ago. At that time I complimented him on his work and there was never a more gracious response from a very gracious guy. God rest your soul, Bill.

  15. "Overnight" was some crazy mix of CNN (which started in 1980) and SNL with some of the most brilliant, not talking down to you writing in the business. It was an inspiration to those of us getting started in the crazy business. And when ABC did the same thing a decade later, who could forget The World News Polka! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lsZhDIJx8A

  16. Bill was one of the reasons we used to have TRUST in reporters and anchors. He was already 'missed" when he left the airways.
Thanks Bill for the fine work.

  17. Sadly, the minor league ca-ca that now gets hired by these predatory mega-media companies has replaced the Bill Schecters and Suzanne Sommers of local TV. I don’t waste a single moment of my time watching the triple that passes for local TV news. You’re better off scrolling through your news feed online.

  18. He did great work sharing the vision of real broadcast journalism with Gary Kauf, Bill Moore, and other fantastic teachers who retired from the TV News craft at Ohlone College in Fremont. He is a good soul.
