KCBS Sports-less Anchor-Less Too; KPIX Sweeps Meh; Stop Jerking the Camera; KALW 91.7 FM Solid News; Friday Schmooze

FRIDAY DELI SCHMOOZE

Twice last week, the afternoon news readers on KCBS had to broadcast the sports news. Nobody from the sports dept. was avaiable which only goes to show how the operations continue to flail away at the alleged all-news radio outlet.

*KPIX had marginal numbers during the Feb Sweeps; better than expected but nothing great. The operative word is flatlining. Which means when you're way down, the only way is back up. PIX has good anchors; I love Reed Cowan, Juliette Goodrich and Liz Cook is getting better every day. PIX needs a good infusion of reporters who know the area and can work the region. I don't think highlighting Wilson Walker is the answer. And yes, Andria Borba is missed, work overload and all.

*Another irritant at PIX: jerking the camera around for effect. WHY? It's silly. It looks weird and frankly, gross. For god's sake, PIX, as I keep preaching: do quality work. Hire good people and reporters and do decent work, you know, REPORT THE NEWS! Leave the gimmicks to someone else. Do as your 5 PM lead-in says, Judge Judy: stick to the basics and cut out all the BS, my goodness.

*In the middle of the night, you have a thirst for news and you don't want to schlep out your IPhone or PC to get uninterupted news, especially, international news: go to 91.7 FM and KALW.

Great radio awaits you: BBC news in London. Breaking financial news from Paris. Ongoing news like reports from earthquake-ravaged Turkey and Syria. It's all well-packaged and interesting. And there's not 100,000 commercials and useless weather/traffic crap. I have it on my must-listen.

  1. Agreed, Reed, Liz and Jules are great anchors. Their delivery is on point.

As far as Wilson Walker, he is a field reporter but whatever he delivers is excellent, it would be great to see him in the anchor chair. A good, no-nonsense guy.

I still wish they put someone else at 11PM like maybe Devin, Max Darrow or even Brian Hackney. Hackney doesn’t have to be stuck on the weekend but Devin Fehely should be there instead, rather than just anchor weekend mornings. He has a good balance of what anchors do, delivers the news in a solid way and asks tough questions while maintaining confidence and believes what he’s saying is the truth. He should be the face of the station or even the 11PM news. Put Donchey back in the field & maybe put her as a fill-in anchor on weekend mornings.

  2. Kalw is a gem. My am news. It is the oldest fm station here. Kevens morning almanac is a treat. Thanks for mentioning them.

  3. You can have AI do the sports and not miss a beat. I'd rather hear a robot do the sports as opposed to someone like Lisa "Got a House for Ya" Chen. Plain and simple, KCBS sucks. And they don't care. They have no competition. I wish they'd get someone to breathe down their necks. But that won't happen. Bloomberg, NPR or satellite radio. That's it.

  4. I've said how much I like Cowan and Goodrich, and also think Cook is really solid. The new look and graphics are growing on me.
Now-- I understand that times are different, but some PIX anchors dress like they're going down to the Saturday farmers' market. Paul Heggen still looks like the insurance office manager who's tending the company barbeque pit.

    1. Cowan, Liz and Goodrich are great no question about that. They do a solid job delivering the news. Goodrich is a veteran and have seen her back in the days when she worked with Bastida in the 90’s and that was the time the news was really news and she is a solid anchor.

As I said Heggen is great, but he needs to stop wearing those jeans on air. Unprofessional and I’m sick of seeing him on Saturday mornings looking all casual. Seriously he doesn’t need to wear a tie but the jeans it really is unprofessional and distracting. Other channels with weekend morning news are having live meteorologists in the morning; KPIX cut out the live views and weather & communication between Devin & Darren Peck. It is good because Peck doesn’t have to work double shifts on the weekend but is this really a cost cutting move? Anyone know?

Peck is there at noon & 3PM Mondays and Tuesdays and if needed sometimes there on the 5PM, 6PM and 7PM newscast.

    2. So now I found how this happens now. If Heggen is not there and Burch is on the AM newscast & noon newscast on Mondays/Tuesdays, Peck will fill in for Heggen from 3PM to the end of the 11PM newscast.

Heggen was off Presidents day and he did spend Sunday on the golf course (In an IG post by Liz Cook, where it was random fire questions, he did say it was his favorite way to spend the day off).

He was good but with the crap going on in the late news by Donchey, at the end Peck wasn’t really having it. But he still did a great job presenting the weather. Better than seeing Hackney do the weather, who I enjoy but not as much compared to Peck or Heggen. Peck really has more personality injected in his weather forecasts despite sounding like a jerk.
