Bay Area TV News Coverage of OPD Chief Firing is Thorough; KTVU-Savidge/Holmes Team Nails On; ABC7 Steady Beil/Sze Work; Cowan-Cook Shine on KPIX; Goodrich Gets LeRonne Armstrong Exclu; Thursday Pulse

THURSDAY PULSE

The OPD chief firing --LeRonne Armstrong was sacked by Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao--was TOPIC A for Bay Area TV News stations, KTVU and KGO, (ABC7)--both stations have a 4PM newscast and the latest chief firing received significant coverage and also, indirectly, proved a dynamic new anchor pairing is just around the corner at Fox2.

First, both Channel 2 and ABC7 News carried the press conference in its entirety, a major surprise and a good decision by the assignment editors. The news was big enough that it also got national attention and important enough as not just an Oakland story, but Bay Area and beyond.

KTVU News anchors, Alex Savidge and Heather Holmes delivered STRONG work and both did superb reporting and analysis; Holmes was particularly effective in a split-screen interview with Peter Dunbar, a former Oakland cop and Bay Area police chief. Holmes obviously prepared for her work by asking Dunbar probing questions about the potential political fallout of such a move. It was refreshing and informative.

I'm not a huge Holmes fan, but she more than carried the segment in this instance and it showed.

Savidge was his usual underrated self. He too asked pointed questions and they were not simply the usual laissez faire.

Good work.

Savidge and Holmes should be KTVU's #1 anchor team --not just at 4 but 6 and 10 PM. The current Julie Haener/Mike Mibach duo are yesterday looks. Haener is expected to either leave/retire on her own any day now--probably sooner rather than later.

Mibach has simply not connected with viewers, notably, (and significantly, women)--his 10PM gig is on borrowed time.

In any event, Savidge and Holmes --with Mark Tamayo anchoring weather--is a KTVU blueprint for 10 PM and it'only a matter of time the suits at Fox2 make this official. It should have happened a long time ago.

*On ABC7, Larry Beil and Kristen Sze, also delivered steady, if not spectacular, anchor duties. The split screen interview with Phil Matier, who knows Oakland politics and police story intrigue real well, (his Insider/Chronicle days proved vital here) was long on detail and short on minutiae.

Matier noted, specifically, that the OPD chief firing story was not an end-all and that it's probably headed for court and "this is far from over."

*KPIX, (CBS News Bay Area) didn't carry the presser --but they had a fairly effective top story at 5 with a dynamic team of Liz Cook and Reed Cowan carrying the day.

Cook is finally reaching her potential as a key PIX reader-- Cowan has won me over and knows his stuff. He should be featured on PIX's multi-layered news platforms.

Also shining: Juliette Goodrich's Exclu with Chief Armstrong --it was done a week ago but proved timely and made for a great watch at 5 and 6 PM.

*KCBS, on radio, also headlined the story and anchors, Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart, did a phone interview with Matier as well.

I'd had hoped KCBS sent a reporter to the Oakland news presser, but Megan Goldsby, (reporter) stayed back in SF.

  2. So Oakland fired their police chief and need another one for a obvious short term assignment. Just another day in Oakland. Time to queue the next anonymous murder on the streets ...

  3. Who would be dumb enough to become the next police chief? Except the obvious, after being fired and the lawsuit against the city starts, settlement, and wealth for the fired police chief.

  4. It’s clear people want Armstrong as Chief. I heard him openly talked about his passion for the job to Juliette Goodrich and he answered her direct questioning about the report. What’s the issue !? Oakland has a tough road ahead .
    Sad.

    1. “It’s clear people want Armstrong as Chief.”

How is this clear? Do you have results from a secret poll? I haven’t seen any information on how “people” feel one way or another. And to can remove Simone just because of how people “feel”; there must be some legal reason. Just ask Anne Kirkpatrick.

    2. Sorry I've no respect for police coverups, Guilty party should've been discipline....

    3. Have read some of the articles about Armstrong, not sure how serious the charges against him is. I don't live in Oakland, but I use to hear him on the Pat Thurston show, he sounded like someone that really cared for his community, and was serious about reducing crime. I personally feel he should have gotten a second chance. I understand he was popular with many.

  5. I'm sure Armstrong will win some kind of settlement and the problems for Oakland continue. LOL

  6. Armstrong should hire John Burris.

  7. When the police quit covering for other’s abuse of the law, I might give them respect. From what I have seen, they are much akin to a lawless Biker gang.
It is not a job i would want, but I am betting 95 out of 100 cops, would “look the other way” when seeing another cop doing something illegal.
I give them respect, but I do not respect them.

  8. Simple fix with KTVU: move Savidge and Holmes weeknights 5,6 and 10pm newscasts...Senior and Rendon do 4 and 7pm (KTVU+) newscasts...

    1. If Julie leaves (?) then maybe put in Heather. But Savidge? No thanks.

  9. Armstrong is obviously looking for big reparations $$$ as is that Lemon on CNN as soon as he is justifiably fired...

    2. Spot on its the hairstyle and the constipated expression. Looks like he hasn’t gone number 2 since the 1990s

    3. Mibach’s parted hair looks confused. It’s like a half ass part. Either part it clearly or comb it back. He doesn’t want to fully commit to the parted look alas Lou Costello nor Sean Hannity

    4. He’s not called the “Constipation Man” for nothing. Combine that with the strange hairstyle (if you can even call it a “style”) and pants that are six inches too short makes him look like a creepy buffoon.

  11. I agree. I, too, think that Cook is reaching her potential. She has improved significantly, since her early days at KPIX.

  12. I've been a fan of Reed Cowan's since he arrived. The most energy and personality from a male KPIX anchor since Dave McElhatton. I was not so down on Jessica Burch as others here, but today she took a hit... she called it the "Marina Greens." Still she is efficient and okay. The six p.m. newscast is Juliette Goodrich's own show as few local newscasts in the business are.

  13. Firing the Oakland Police Chief is wrong. Who wants to be a cop in Oakland? City Government is terrible.

  14. Armstrong should have been fired. I read the confidential report and I think he looked the other way so as not to not upset the chinese community by dealing with the Sgt who should have been fired. He was in charge of OPD providing the Chinatown security and pulling in a questionable amount of OT. What Sgt should be making close to 500k in one year with 276k of it in OT?.

  15. I totally agree about Alex Savidge and Heather Holmes. I taped the 4 and 5 PM shows and they kept the channel on the mayor for everything. Then Heather asked great questions after like a national FOX reporter would, I was really impressed with both of them but HH was the star. Now I really think that she is the real face of KTVU, I like Julie too and always have but Holmes really is a smart cookie, so on one hand, I think she could be the new 10 PM anchor if Julie leaves but now I would miss her (HH) at 4, 5 and 7 because I never stay up for the 10 anymore.

  16. Clearly Sheng Thao is proving herself to be every bit as capable as former Oakland mayor Jean Quan.
    Building on the Quan legacy

If you really want to know the details of the Oakland PD scandal you have to read the top journalist on the topic Darwin BondGraham in The Oaklandside who has 3 recent articles on it and had access to most of the confidenfial independent investigation. Why was Officer Chung making $492k a year?

    1. Exactly. Also why did officer Chang throw a bullet casing over the bay bridge after he discharged his gun at OPD offices!? Come on man. OPD can do better. Why did Armstrong try to shield this officer? Are there others?

  18. I watched Savidge and Holmes. They are a solid pairing and I agree with you, Rich! Mibach remains unwatchable and Haener appears to be disinterested.

  19. I haven't been watching KTVU news much in the last couple of weeks. I'm somewhat surprised Julie H. is still on, or is she not? How is retiring/quitting/leaving a higher-profile anchor job done? I understand there's a contract. When might the current contract end?

Can an employee (Julie H.) merely give the customary 2-week notice and quit? Is there an announcement/memos made throughout the staff along with an announcement/memo of the replacement?

Is it all kept very confidential and personal and everyone finds out when Julie H. just no longer shows up on Sunday afternoon and the replacement tells the staff and word gets out from there? Or perhaps everybody notices Julie H. cleaning up and taking home all her personal office items.

  20. Juliette Goodrich is God awful. She needs a stylist #1, and the fact that she says “look at this” and “alright here we go” is embarrassing. The down home let’s get comfortable with the way we speak to viewers paints her out as brainless which she is not. The walk and talk around the studio is TV 101 looks like it’s being shot in a junior college class.
