Warriors Stinker at NBA Finals Matched on Post-Game TV/Radio; 95.7 FM - The Game's John Dickinson Shines; KNBR/Scott Reiss (Yawn); Live Shots at Chase Offer Boring Local TV News Live Shots

WATCHED THE WARRIORS LAST NIGHT. Wasn't all surprised of the outcome. The Boston Celtics are a good team and this Game 1 win should make for an entertaining NBA Finals.

But back to the game.

I watched, (tried to, at least) post-game coverage. From the "ATG" show on KGO (ABC7) to the cable/NBC Sports Bay Area--I also made it a point to listen to the radio after-game coverage too. Overall, I was not impressed by any of the product. I'm used to hearing good analysis on various outlets but I can't find it on Bay Area airwaves.

*The ABC (KGO-TV) poster that aired immediately after the game amounted to Larry Beil looking and acting as if he were a fan (with authority!) --ex-Warriors jock, Adonal Foyle, said nothing and only gave scant insight into what had taken place. No surprise. Kerry Keating, a fomer coach, who does say something and is useful, was predictably, muted. KGO prefers Foyle, I guess, because he has Warriors' cred although Foyle isn't interesting and has pretty much zero to offer other than usual jock spin and banal insights, (none).

*NBC Sports Bay Area was even worse than KGO's tripe. It's a standard-faire post-game show, really a shill show that has Chris Mullin as a commentator only the Ex-Warriors guy doesn't offer anything unique, now or ever. Mullin is on the air because he's Chris Mullin but the show lacks bite because he and the other bread crumbs don't say anything of substance. Probabaly intentional which is why NBCSBA exists, a filter of its client, the Warriors and NBA broadcast minutiae.

*On radio, unintentionally, I found a quality show, 95.7 FM Warriors' reporter, John Dickinson, (pictured), who was outstanding and did a great job on analysis and a real concise summation of the game. It was not locker-room crap and sports-talk jibe but a quality breakdown, the Warriors' brain fart at the end (4thQ) and overall thoughts.

Dickinson was also on point of what took place and more importantly, how the Celtics could be a juggernaut and no pushover the rest of the series. He was especially unique and offered amazing candor without the usual BS/home-team residue. I like John Dickinson quite a bit and will give a listen more than I thought I would.

An aside: I, again, unintentionally, liked the listener/fan non-stop calls that Dickinson and his co-host, Whitey Gleason, interacted with. They were insightful, (for the most part) and they were thorough. It was good to hear a program that sailed along not constantly interupted by endless commercials. Dickinson knows how to captian a ship.

I've been critical of "The Game" but I offer praise on Thursday night. Matt Nahigian, (PD) --you finally got it right, here.

*KNBR gave us vanilla wafer, Scott Reiss, who is mayonnaise on a tofu sandwich. Just plain mundane, boring and about as benign as you can get. If Reiss could have engaged with callers, that might have been interesting, but instead, talked to local jocks and writers and the show stunk from there on. KNBR doesn't believe in callers. What a pathetic outfit.

*The pre-game live shots from Chase Center were their usual gruesome self. It's not surprising anymore and it's no insult. We've all become accustomed to this massive show of PR visual fare. The Warriors love it, the city is in and the fans, screaming and as doofus they've become, are all in too.

Just once, I'd actually like to see a news man/woman roam the area and ask some legit questions --"how much did you pay for your seats?" --"did you think the Warriors would get back to the Finals so quickly from previous years?"--instead, reporters act like idiots and might as well be cheerleaders themselves. It's nothing new anymore. Que a bunch of drunk guys (and gals) with Steph Curry jerseys and screaming inane nothings.

Back to the desk.

  1. How is “How much did you pay for your seat” a legit question? I can give you a clue…. A lot! You’re right about the Games post game show. It did offer some honest insight, and the host didn’t trip all over themselves as per usual with 95.7 host.

  2. The Warriors will lose the finals. Woke Karma. Woke Giants tumbling downhill. Beautiful thing about the Bay Area, so many other things to do and see.

    1. "Woke" twice in one paragraph! Congratulations on your accomplishment. You must be proud.

  3. JD is very good. Reiss is another Stanford stiff, just like Flem.

    1. How many places does Reiss have to get fired from before they figure out he's not good?

  4. "How much did you pay for your seats?"

    None of your fucking business.

  5. When has NBC Sports Bay Area NOT been state media for the local teams? It's literally their job to blow smoke up fans' asses and tell everyone their team is awesome, no matter what. Curtis Brown has literally ignored or awkwardly pivoted from elephants in the room because it's too negative. It's yet another reason why fan-driven podcasts are building stronger and more devoted audiences.

  6. On another topic, KOFY 20 has gone out of business and is now airing a national feed called "Grit" that airs Westerns 24/7. Got a feeling this will eventually happen to all local stations.

  7. The going rate for a Game 3 ticket at the TD Garden ranges from $750 to $15,500, according to a story that aired tonight on Boston ABC affiliate WCVB.

  8. Sorry Rich, but I don't t think the pregame live shots gruesome. I think it's cool to see Thrive City and fans getting juiced for the Warriors playoff game! Yeah, a lot of other teams are doing the same thing with the fans outside of the arena before games, but it's cool to see the atmosphere.

Rich, you know you want to be out at Thrive City for a Warriors playoff game!

No, they had accidentally switched to a QAnon rally......

  10. JD and Steiny are good on Warriors commentary. Whitey is good for comic relief. Just to add, Anthony Slater of the Athletic is excellent with his postgame analysis.

    1. JD is pretty good on Warriors commentary, even though at times he can be negative. Overall, I like JD though.

Steiny on the other hand, his credibility covering the Warriors got ruined when he predicted the Mavs would beat the Warriors in 6 games in the Western Conference Finals. Sometimes it feels like Steiny at times hates the Warriors and tries to troll Warrior fans like he may have with his Western Conference Finals prediction. At times he may be jaded because he covered the Warriors back in the dark days when they were one of the worst franchises in the NBA.

Whitey is ok. At times he can be goofy, but yeah, you're right, he's pretty much there for comic relief.

I agree Anthony Slater is good. Damon had him in studio during his show earlier this week, and Anthony Slater is solid. Knows the ins and outs of the team. Yeah, he's on the beat, but he gives you even better insight on the team.

  11. Whitey Gleason is really good. He should have a show in the bay area. He is much better than anyone else up on Sacramento radio. He deserves to be in the Bay.
