Both Papa and the 49ers have agreed to a new, multi-year contract estension--the extension news will be formally announced later today (Tuesday) by the team and its broadcast partners, (including flagship, KNBR).
Papa joined the 49ers in 2019 after spending over 20 years as the play-by-play broadcaster for the Oakland Raiders. He left the Raiders in 2018 due to a business conflict with owner, Mark Davis. He subsequently joined the Niners and has built up a winning broadcast formula--both with fans and the 49ers' broadcast hierarchy-- and color analyst, Tim Ryan --(who was also signed to an extension last year.)
Papa will continue to co-host his KNBR show (10-2 PM) and will also maintain his assorted hosting duties on the 49ers various in-house shows via their website and social media platforms. *EXCLUSIVE
Please put him back on the pre-game Warriors broadcasts.
ReplyDeleteNO! Please don't ruin the show.
DeleteI just threw up in my mouth.
ReplyDeleteI really dislike both of them on the broadcasts.
DeleteThis is sad news. Bring back Ted Robinson! Anyone but this smarmy asshole.
ReplyDeleteTed Robinson is not an NFL announcer. Yes, he had a good run with the Niners as their radio play-by-play guy, but I think he does better work with the Pac-12 Network and the Olympics. I also liked his work with the Giants back in the day, when he used to call Giants games.
DeleteGreg Papa is an NFL announcer and he has that knowledge and passion for NFL football. I liked Ted Robinson, but if you have a chance to get a Greg Papa despite his Raider ties, if he's available, you bring him in.
Ted Robinson may be a nice guy but was as vanilla as they come. He was good, and little more.
Delete@8:47- I agree, he kind of was, at least for NFL football. For NFL football, you need a radio play-by-play voice with more personality or a guy that you associate with the team. With Ted Robinson, I didn't think Niner football, even when he was calling Niner games.
DeleteI don't think NFL football is Robinson's strongest sport, even though he does a great job with college football games on Pac-12 Network, but college football is different from NFL football as far as calling games.
Smarmy asshole is right.
ReplyDeletePerfect adjective for him. Everytime he interviews Susan Slusser he calls her "Suz."
Delete@Kermit- I think Greg Papa knows her from his days calling A's games, and her covering the A's in those days. I'm sure that could be a fun nickname he gives her. If she's cool with it, it's all good.
DeleteYour just full of good news, aren't you. Thank God he does the radio side and not the television side. For me, it's his arrogance that turns me off.
ReplyDeleteHe does the TV side during the preseason.
DeleteThe man has 3 daughters that live off his dime. And one of his sons started work at KNBR this week or starts next week. Life with a huge home in Blackhawk gets expensive as well. As Raddy would say, "overhead".
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the 49ers gave an extension to this alcoholic. He does not represent the franchise that well. He is also wrong on almost every sports topic he discusses.
ReplyDeleteGreg has to get his kids jobs with KNBR and the NFL. I am sure his son Nick the most qualified person for these jobs. I wonder would it would look like seeing Greg throw or catch a football or baseball.
ReplyDeleteHis other son follows him around to the radio stations hes worked..first 95.7,now derek papa was hired to produce "tommy T and young copes"
Delete@unknown stuntman- Wasn't Derek Papa on NFL Network? I remember when Greg Papa got let go from the Raiders, and then took the Niners job, around that time Greg Papa mentioned that his son Derek Papa took a job at NFL Network. Of course this was like a few years ago, but still.
DeleteI dont think it was a "business" conflict with Davis..Papa had made some disparaging comments about him privately and publicly when he heard Davis was going to talk with Mike Shanahan about the coaching opening before they hired jack del rio..Papa felt it was an insult to al davis legacy because al had fired him years earlier and never got along with him..according to Papa their relationship deteriorated badly after that,to the point Mark cut him out off some events Papa was going to MC for the org in the offseasons..which finally led to mark davis firing him
ReplyDeletePeople actually listen to football over the radio rather than watching on TV/streaming?
ReplyDeleteand that ''yeah ,yeah ,yeah''' machine, tim ryan..he's a constant ''yeah ,yeah ,yeah'' Machine.nothing original, probably damaged by football.
ReplyDeleteTim Ryan is pretty good. He's been the Niners color analyst on the radio broadcasts for about 10, 11 yrs now. He's doing something right. Gives good insights.
DeleteHis "Touchdown....San Francisco" call is among the worst in sports, I guess he doesn't want to say "Touchdown Niners" because it's too close to his old Raiders call...
ReplyDeleteYeah, at times it feels forced even though it's a new wrinkle. He actually got the idea from the Chiefs radio play-by-play guy of all people who has the "Touchdown Kan sas City" call whenever the Chiefs score a TD.
DeleteThis is unfortunate His TD calls are abominable
ReplyDeleteThey gave Raider Rally Monkey an extension after they chased Ted Robinson. What a stooooopid move Niners.
ReplyDeleteTake the time to listen to the other NFL home team announcers. Besides being unapologetic homers - they aren't very good. Not saying Papa is the best, but he is damn good. Listen to the crap The Rams and Chargers have. Even The Raiders (Brent Mussburger?) arent as good as Papa.
ReplyDeleteI agree, a lot of the radio play-by-play announcers for a lot of these other NFL teams are terrible. It's unbelievable and kind of laughable how bad they really are. Makes you appreciate a guy like Greg Papa more, and that he decided to stay in the Bay and work with the Niners
DeletePapa is terrible at calling games. His ego gets so caught up in spouting off pre-snap formations, personnel and shifts that by the time the ball is snapped all he has time (or the breath) for is whether it is a pass or handoff. On pass plays he regularly omits the most important info - what side of the field the pass was thrown to and how deep. Your left waiting to hear what yard line the ball has been spotted on to get an idea of what actually happened.
ReplyDeleteI was a pretty good fan of Papa as he’s called games for every Bay Area pro team except the Sharks at this point! But 1) Mark Davis took umbrage to Papa’s opinions on Shanahan 2) This extension ironically came right after Musberger was released but I couldn’t see Davis crawling back to Papa 3) “Touchdooooown San Fran Cisco!” sounds better if they actually still played in San Francisco not 30+ miles south!
