KNBR Rebounds in M25-54 April Book; "The Game" Falls; Is Larry Krueger Headed to 95.7 FM All-Sports Dreck? Probably

ANY DAY NOW...nothing is official, but I smell ex-KNBR talker, Larry Kreuger, being HIRED by perrenial FM (all-sports) albatross, 95.7 "The Game."

Why?

Because The Game fell (again) to its accustomed dead zone--not only the beauty contest numbers, but the all important M25-54 ratings that are the lox and bagels of real, competitive radio. Especially terrestrial radio where ad buyers do their buying and stations crow about their monthly chops...or not.

KNBR, whether they got as assist from Giants baseball (April) or actual men listening to bullshit garbage by The Game's audio assault and saying, "No, I can't stomach this shit!", had a rebound April and went from 15th overall in the Bay Area radio (April) ratings to 5th.

More importtantly, KNBR got back to M25-54 dominance--The Game? Failure central. Worse, The Game's Warriors' NBA Playoff push was nowhere to be seen proving basketball on radio is not a good mix.

Which means 95.7 FM is prime to hire another KNBR retread like Krueger and pair him with, say, Mark Willard ( a guess and put forth by a local broadcast wonk)--in fact, so goes the rumor on the street: Krueger could be on the 957 payroll sometime soon because he and The Game's fanboy PD, Matt Nahigian, are on dire straits and needs help from the KNBR retread roster dept.

Enter Lawrence Krueger.

Any day now.

  1. At least he is not hiring Rod Brooks? What is he doing now?

    1. Brooks is podcasting methinks. Larry is just on his couch. Eating cheetos and mock drafting.

    2. Probably a podcast like every other tubesteak in the world

  2. I wouldn't be surprised if Krueger comes to 95.7 as well, but it looks like he's doing his thing on Youtube right now. We'll see what happens

  3. If Krueger does go to 95.7, I would either pair him up with Guru or with Damon Bruce. Willard has a good show with Dibs. I think 95.7 should keep them paired up for now. With that being said, Dibs is going to miss time as he is expecting a child in a few months. Not sure if you have Krueger come in to fill in for Dibs until Dibs comes back from paternity leave.

I think Krueger with Guru could be a good show. Yeah, Steiny and Guru is one of the main pairings in 95.7's weekday lineup and it might be risky to break up the Steiny and Guru pairing, but Steiny got more annoying this past week with his Mavs in 6 prediction.

Krueger with Bruce could work too. They did Niner radio pregame shows on KNBR, I think back in 2011, 2012 and they seemed like a good pairing back then. I think they could be a good pairing on the afternoon drive time show on 95.7. They both are passionate about sports and Krueger wouldn't be a downer like Ratto is.

    1. Otis, the station gets crappy ratings moving guys who get CRAP rating around won't help.. Get rid of them all but Bonta they are all just knbr retreads.

    2. I would take Krueger more seriously than I do Bruce. Damon makes some outlandish comments. That being said, I wouldn't listen to Larry. Sorry, but I find is sniveling style to be annoying.

    3. @11:41- I agree on keeping Bonta, but I wouldn't get rid of the rest of the weekday hosts with the exception of Ratto and Steiny. 95.7 gets a lot of traction online in their Audacy App and through their livestreams on Youtube and Twitch.

I'm not sure if their weekday lineup is the problem, it may be their signal reach, which has been a problem since they started as a sports station. 95.7 just doesn't have the signal stretch like KNBR does.

  4. As far as what I would do with Steiny or Ratto if Krueger replaced either one of them, I would maybe have Ratto be a fill-in host or have segments where he comes in for a segment or two on any of the main weekday shows when a major Bay Area sports topic is discussed and they want to get Ratto's opinion for whatever reason, if he's in the mood. I would give Ratto the Lo Neal role, basically a part-time host, but has a segment when news breaks.

For Steiny, I would maybe put him back on the Warriors this week show on Saturdays. Even though him and Guru are a main pairing on 95.7, Steiny seems to get along better with JD, John Dickinson.

I think we can all agree that Ratto and Steiny are the weak links of 95.7, even though they have years of experience covering Bay Area sports, I'll give them that. It just feels like they're not needed at times, or that they can't keep up anymore to be on a weekday show.

    4. @11:39- Thanks, I appreciate it!... It would be cool to work there one day, but I don't want to replace anyone there currently. Most of the hosts on 95.7 do a great job. I don't want them to be axed, even though I'm not really a fan of Steiny or Ratto.

      Thanks again!

    5. @11:42- I agree, he is. How are you going to make a prediction against the Warriors just because everyone else at the station was picking the Warriors? He couldn't even explain clearly last week why he thought the Mavs would win this series. What a clown.

Can't believe he did that interview with Steph last month, and still made a prediction like this. Imagine if Steph or other people in the Warriors organization, would've caught wind of that? Steiny is lucky he still has pull in the Warriors organization despite making outlandish predictions like this.

Yeah, part of that may have been schtick, but c'mon! It's stupid.

    6. While they're at it, they can bring back Ricky Title,"urbs and all time personalfavorite, so much that cant recall his name, he used to talk more about his favorite rap groups and knew nothing about sports.

    7. @unknown stuntman- Are you referring to Zakariah? He used to do weekends on 95.7. He was kind of an East Bay version of Shasky, but he was annoying at times. I liked his passion for sports, and as you mentioned, I liked when he talked about rap as well, but there were times when he was cringe. He could've been like Shasky, but listening to him at times when he was hosting shows by himself, you wanted to turn him off. I think they were trying to make Zakariah be another Townsend as he was hosting some A's radio pre and postgame shows at the time from what I remember, but it wasn't the same.

Rick Tittle was ok, but he was dry and kind of boring. Not really a good combination for a weekend sports radio talk show. The guy was funny at times though and had that dry humor, but I can see why he's not on the air anymore. When the A's left 95.7 as their flagship, there was kind of no reason to have Rick Tittle on 95.7 anymore, as he was one of the few real Oakland sports fans on that station in 95.7's earlier days as a sports station.

Mychael Urban was cool, but he would talk about Barry Zito a little too much for me. Yeah, Barry Zito was his boy and he wrote a book about him in that early 2000's A's rotation, but it's hard to hear his memories of Barry Zito when most of us Giants fans don't really have as many fond memories of Barry Zito outside of the 2012 playoffs and World Series.

    8. Thank you, yes Zakariah, completely forgot his name..and yeah, he did talk sports, but you could tell he was in over his head, most of the time..

  5. True, I watch Warrior games on TV and only listen to the games on 95.7 The Game on my commute home.

  6. KNBR's ratings improvement probably due to Giant's baseball and the jettisoning of Brooks and Kreuger.

  7. Larry looks he's mainlining Best Foods. Good lord. Mix in a salad.

  8. I like Krueger. Knbr should have axed M&M and put Krueger in that slot.

I know nothing about ratings but Krueger on the game has to be able to beat 3/4 of the knbr lineup.......right? Is radio that bad?

  9. As I recall, Krueger and Damon really don’t like each other at all. Don’t see that pairing working out.

    1. Damon and Krueger are cool with each other. Damon interviewed Krueger on his show I think last month around the NFL Draft.

    2. It was just coincidence that, after Krueger got exiled to Siberia for his "brain-dead Caribbeans" rant, Damon Bruce was hired to fill in the Sportsphone 680 late evening spot. Then Damon got a one-way Ticket to 1050 AM before landing at 95.7 The Game. Then Krueger was released on parole to team up with Gary Radnich.

    3. @5:59- It is interesting how Damon's and Krueger's careers are linked. If it wasn't for Krueger's Caribbean hitters rant, there may not have been a Damon Bruce, at least not here in the Bay Area.

    3. @4:38- I remember how open Krueger used to be about his tobacco use when he used to mention that on his show with Radnich. Thankfully he's been able to turn it around and not chew tobacco anymore when he realized the dangers it can cause.
