Dion Lim ABC News Fill-In Gig Ominous for Circle7; Dan Ashley Firmly #1; Daetz Too; Bad Spin at KPIX; Yamamoto/Donchey Failure; CBS Had No Choice with Norah O'Donnell Extension; "Tolbert-Copes" Stench at KNBR; KTVU/Gonzales Weather Dept. Can't Spell; Saturday Schmooze

WHILE IT'S just a fill-in gig, Dion Lim's ABC News anchor duties in NY next week, might be a tempting destination for Lim and her network aspirations.

Lim has clearly emerged as a bona-fied presence at KGO (ABC7); at first, I regarded her as a total lightweight, but she altered her quirky voice and began delivering solid news reports. Enough to rile co-workers, one in particular, who viewed her as a person to reckon with and fear her ascent.

Circle7 has a big problem: Dan Ashley, and Ama Daetz in particular, aren't going anywhere soon and therefore, Lim's want to become a primetime anchor at 900 Front remains a difficult chore with the suits. How to placate Lim and at the same time, defer to Ashley and Daetz.

KGO's ratings are firmly at the top in most major time slots including the evening newscasts. And while Dion loves the Bay Area, she has NY aspirations.

Think of her World News Now fill-in (and World News This Morning) as a virtual audition.

*MAKE NO BONES ABOUT IT: Ashley has become the TOP DOG anchor, not only at ABC7 but the entire Bay Area TV market.

Thirty years plus and the Ash man has made his presence known with a firm grasp at KGO; his anchor duties are extraordinary with work at 4 PM (on occasion), 5, 6 and 11. That's a huge undertaking--four shows each day and Ashley makes it look easy. Not to mention his off-station duties like speaking engagements and making personal appearences, Ashley is KGO's #1 face-of-station.

*They can continue to SPIN it any way they want to but it's all BS: the anchor duo of Ryan Yamamoto and Sara Donchey at PIX is a TOTAL ZERO. Ratings are stagnant. The combination of Yamamoto and Donchey has produced NO buzz and traction whatsoever. That's not just my take, but almost the entire staff at 855 Battery. Proof positive was the FEB SWEEPS; PIX's numbers were abysmal. And 5 PM (where Yamamoto and Donchey reside) were a DISASTER! Just the facts, maam.

*CBS just gave Norah O'Donnell a contract extension, not because they love her but because they had no other choice to. Most other possible replacements don't exist or have migrated to the cable world and thus, CBS extended ratings-challenged O'Donnell. On the other hand, O Donnell's star presence makes up for her less-than-loving personality off the NY anchor desk.

*After over a month on the KNBR all-sports air, the new "Tolbert and Copes" (Tom Tolbert/Adam Copeland) show (2-6 PM) is LOUSY radio.

Tolbert seems BORED and disinterested and you can hear it. He's also getting lazy too. Just this last week, he arrived a good ten minutes LATE to the mic and co-host, Copeland had to stall and ad-lib while Tommy finally showed up.

Copeland is terrible-- he adds NOTHING to the show other than a tiresome cackle that is heard every minute. Copeland can't deliver and his major ass-kissing of Tolbert is as obvious as all get-go. The show has no buzz and is a ratings total disaster. Nothing new at Thee Sports Bleeder.

*OH KTVU and Roberta Gonzales can't spell Ben Lomond, Livermore and Kentfield --this morning was proof positive.

    2. Ran into him in Vietnamese noodle house a few years back when he was working for another network than PIX. Complained very loudly about the food...Do you know who I am? I can shut this place down in less than a second. Asshole then... most likely asshole now.

  4. I think Brian Copeland was ok on radio. Came up with topics on his show and could have a discussion. His son, however, sounds like some schmoe off the street with lazy takes. And Tolbert bored as hell. I give it a month or 2. Tolbert may leave. Do betting radio like Musberger.

  5. You didn't recognize "Livermoe" on KTVU's newscast this morning? Even worse, next hour they updated its rain total and left the misspelling intact.

  6. Bill Martin should be embarrassed for bringing Roberta onboarding. KTVU has gone straight to hell this past year. And it's happened so fast.

  7. KNBR should just blow everything up and syndicate their shows from national. What they have now is just awful from top to bottom. How many terrible sports stations does the Bay Area need?

    1. The only thing with national shows is that they rarely talk Bay Area sports. They talk about the East Coast teams, LeBron, and the Cowboys. When they talk Bay Area sports, they hate on them or try to undermine their success. During the Warriors dynasty years, they hated on the Warriors. When the Giants were winning World Series last decade, you wouldn't have known it listening to national sports talk radio shows. There's only probably a few national shows that are worth listening to on FOX Sports Radio, CBS Sports Radio, and ESPN Radio, the national sports talk radio affiliates here in the Bay Area.

As far as an overhaul, KNBR may need to look into that I do agree there. They should consider poaching some of the talent from 95.7 and/or maybe bringing back guys that they used to have (Damon Bruce, Mark Willard, Dibley, Bonta?) and give them a fresh start on a revamped KNBR?

    2. I agree with you in that it has Eastern bias on all sports but what show on any sports station here is good? I honestly cannot think of ANY local show that I can listen to. And I have tried, they all think they sound smart but they are morons. Really! All stupid, except for Marty Lurie and Bruce jenkins for about 15 minutes.

    3. Otis every one of those guys you listed are EX Knbr employees who get LOWER ratings at the Game why would that make sense?

  9. Well I guess Rich with KOFY TV now airing western tv GRIT that means Dion Lim has less airtime maybe thats why KGO tv dropped the news on KOFY tv...

  10. Copeland giggling in appeasement as Tolbert never lets him finish-will therebe a will smith moment when ''copes'' says: STOP INTERRUPTING ME!!--STOP INTERRUPTING ME!!.

  11. Tolbert seems to always be late when the show starts...the intro music just keeps playing and playing until he finally decides to show up. It's a total lack of disrespect to the listeners, IMO.

  12. Good God HOW did stupid KTVU let Kyla Grogan ever walk out the door? I know you said she is long gone but I really wish she'd come back to bay area tv. She is missed. My wife and I always watched when she was on. I think she had family here too. Such a shame.

  16. CBS erred when Scott Pelley was fired as managing editor and primary anchor. He was excellent. He was anchor in the tradition of Cronkite and Rather.

Jeff Glor was pushed out of the anchor’s chair by management so Nora O’Donnell could become managing editor and anchor. She’s okay, but ABC News with David Muir is so much superior.

    1. CBS Evening News and CBS Morning Show are so ridiculously "woke", they're unwatchable. Their ratings can't be good...

    2. Agree!! and Jeff Glor could of have left CBS how he got treated but instead he did it with “class” and handled it like a professional...

    3. Jeff Glor has a new show on Saturday morning (CBS) that is pretty decent, with Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson. Good music at the end with new breakout musicians.

  17. The bay area doesn't pay what it used to and it's the most expensive place to live. If Lim is smart she'll get to NYC as fast as possible, it's where the real money is to be made in broadcasting. Not to mention the networks have actual resources and give a crap what their shows look like unlike here. This markets news no longer looks like a big city product. They've stripped it down to bare bones and it shows. The only ones left making any money here are management and they got their positions by pinching pennies and sucking the life out of their shows. Cheap, demographic hires is all you see here anymore. No one gives a crap about actually making good tv and enterprise reporting. Those days are done. Tragic.

    1. They used to have weather producers so there was another set of eyes on things before air time but cheap ass SF stations 86'd those a while ago. The weather people could write ANYTHING and no one would see it until it aired. Crazy but true!
