KNBR Waits for the Next Axe to Fall; Mark Ibanez Dumps Suits and Ties on KTVU Newsroom (Literally); Papa Show Airs Will Smith's "Shit" Brigade; KPIX Stale Anchors; Rumor: Joe Starkey Swan Song on Cal Football/ KGO Radio 43 Years; Wednesday Wash

CUMULUS has its sports outlet, (KNBR) on edge: who's about to get sacked next. It's NOT about if, it's about when and who.

After firing Larry Krueger and Rod Brooks, a reliable source told me someone up the high-end pay (making over $100G) was the next to get the axe.

That would include Tom Tolbert, Brian Murphy, Greg Papa and John Lund.

Again, it's coming and it wouldn't shock anyone, says the source, if it were Tom Tolbert or perhaps, John Lund.

But again, NO ONE is safe.

*A sidebar on Mark Ibanez: the KTVU veteran sports anchor, who's last night is tommorow (Thursday) night, brought in his suit collection to the KTVU newsroom and literally placed them on a desk for those who wanted to help themselves to Ibanez' suit/tie ensemble--yeah, there was quite the reaction.

*A number of local stations played the expletive-laced verbal barrage uttered by Will Smith Oscar night--during Papa's KNBR show on Monday in the 10 AM hour, listeners got "shit" two times from Mr. Smith yelp to Chris Rock. They may have been amused but the FCC won't.

*An easy observation that is readily OBVIOUS to the naked eye: KPIX has the WORST and most archaic-looking anchors in the Bay Area. Outside of a Juliette Goodrich and Liz Cook, PIX's set of news readers are just plain boring, uninspiring and unimaginative. Worse, the combo Ryan Yamamoto and Sara Donchey are DISASTERS! Who said that, a majority of the KPIX staff who know the drill but can't say anything for fear of being sent to the back of the class. Somebody in charge has to clean up the mess.

*There's a rumor that Cal Football pbp-broadcaster, Joe Starkey, will call it quits after the '22 season--the 40-year anniv. of The Play comes Novemner and that would be a fitting way to say goodbye --Starkey has done Cal football since 1975.

*When you run multiple promos, national ads, PSAs, and such, that's not a good omen. Even if your morning shows from 6-Noon have "decent" ratings. You still have NO CUME, your AQL is MIA, and you have hosts talking gibberish and not attempting to engage listeners with news topics. You still cling to the idea that gimmicks and pretend radio, with lifestyle, Facebook bullshit, will win the day and night. Not a chance. Too bad the top suit still doesn't get it. He never will.

  1. Tolbert always interrupts Copeland, never lets him 'get going'.

  2. If Starkey throws in the towel, what's he gonna do?..chase after termites and rodents,yikes..I suggest he and chip franklin do a podcast on the weirdest places they found bedbugs..

  3. I have a feeling it will be Tolbert. Seems to be mailing it in lately. Chop off his huge salary. He will retire and just do GSW home games. Seems lazy. That will be enough. Maybe go betting rout and do a LV show like Musberger does now.

  4. That call in 1982, is one of the all time greats by Starkey.

    1. He was incoherent. Pete Liebengood's call on TV was much better.

  5. For me, a toss up between Tom and John. I know you said Rich that Tom drives the bus,I still don't understand why? And John has no business doing talk sports radio. He brings nothing in my opinion to the show. All his sucking up to Papa is just plain embarrassing.

  6. I do believe, Cumulus owns more than just KNBR. Why do the cuts have to come from just that one station??

    $100k , not $100g!!!

    1. Every Cumulus station has to reduce costs. The company has massive debt. It’s not rocket science!

  8. If it Tolbert that is let go I suspect Crowley will reunite with Copeland for the afternoon. Tolbert doesn't share his guest with the co host. Makes for awkward interviews and difficult listening.

  9. Roxy Bernstein wants the job... even though his baseball and football knowledge and play-by-play if Gof awful! But he's a Cal Alum and his daddy helped him get where he is. Classic case of money and not how good you are or what you know but who you know. Cal! Find someone better. Roxy ain't the guy!

  10. I think John Lund needs to GO! Horrible and brings nothing to the conversation. He's Greg Papa's Yes Man. Kind like Chester the Dog from that classic Loony Tunes cartoon with Spike the Dog (Greg). Have to believe they keep Papa since he's the play-by-play man for the Niners. KNBR sucks! No one listens because all they do is interviews. No one ever talks to the fans! Bring back the Little General Bob Agnew and Tony Salvatore. Now talk about egos!

  11. I remember Joe doing the Seals on KEEN.(where have you gone Dave Hrechkosy?) I'm one of thousands who actually listen LIVE KGO's The Play. 1982 there few to none live NCCA telecasts. The Big Game was tape delayed for a 11;30pm time slot and I believe Pete Liebengood was at the mic. I'll be listening to every game this season for sure.
