Julie Haener Still Cares about Frank Somerville even if KTVUers Don't; Ibanez All But Gone; PIX Flirtation; Desperate Medoro/KGO Radio "Penis" Talk; Pam Moore "Tired" at KRON; Thinner, Cheaper Chronicle; Vern Glenn Gets More Irritating at PIX; KRONvicts:Reyna Harvey Lack of Star Power; Thursday Schmooze

WHILE SHE HAS a trust issue with him--and always will-Julie Haener very much cares about Frank Somerville and is still regarded as a friend. So much so, she is deeply concerned about his future, both personal and professional.

"She really cares about him. Nothing has changed," says a connected KTVU source. "She has not wavered on any point. She really cares about Frank, always has, always will." This is in stark contrast to the general feeling at KTVU where a majority feel virtually NO sympathy for Somerville and continue to breathe a sigh of relief that he's gone from the station and likely done not only there but TV News anchoring in general.

*Meanwhile, the repercussions of sports anchor, Mark Ibanez leaving are beginning to take effect at KTVU. There's a growing sense that Ibanez will LEAVE next month--another veteran of the Core4--departing Fox2 and leaving a VOID is creating quite a tense atmosphere at the station. The general consensus is a complete malaise and indifference. The overall take from staff is Ibanez is all but gone --leaving an unavoidable gap with KTVU's newscasts and the storied "10 O'Clock News" in crisis.

I hope this never takes place. I hope the dimbulbs that run KTVU --and Fox brass as well--use Ibanez as both a sports and news anchor, a "hybrid"--it's been done before.Ibanez is too valuable an asset, not to mention a Bay Area-rooted talent for KTVU to lose but I'm probably being a bit naive. Imagine KTVU brass as being pragmatic. Don't hold your breath.

*Don't get all worked up just yet: KRON veteran anchor, Pam Moore, isn't leaving anytime soon but Moore is "tired", a bit anxious, say insiders. She told a few KRONvicts recently that "I'm not having fun anymore."

Moore has battled a bit of professional malaise. She's also still dealing with the fall she took at work. It hasn't helped that the fall afffected both her back and shoulder. She's dealing, still, with a lot of pain. I don't think Moore is splitting KRON anytime soon but just the talk has a lot of people freaked out.

*The amount of new, younger, reporters and columnists at the SF Chronicle is not only readily apparent but a tactical move by Hearst--by pushing the old guys to either leave or take an early retirement, the company can hire new, (read: CHEAPER) staff. So now you have not only a THINNER printed paper, but out-of-towners performing at semi-slave wages. It's disgusting to see new by-lines of people, many of whom are not from the Bay Area.

*Lisa White, the soon, permanent KPIX ND (assuming she wants the gig) should use her power to make PIX more watchable and that's not only from an anchor/reporter standpoint, it's an overall view. PIX newscats, frankly, just look clumsy and unappealing. Get a new set. Amp up live shots from the newsroom. Make an attempt to get more anchor/reporter talk-back. You have nothing to lose. From what I hear, White is planning on making some major moves. She should. And CBS apparently is all positive about this missive.

*MORE PIX: sorry Vern Glenn, you're an eternal #2 and PIX knows it, which is why GM Kevin Walsh is looking at Ibanez as a potential #1 sports anchor. Ibanez gives PIX a NAME, STAR Bay Area guy with loads of buzz and IT factor. Vern is too busy trying to act like Gary Radnich. He's irritating. He's also frustrating to watch. Glenn is barely a second fiddle. He should embrace the idea of working with Ibanez.

*DESPERATE: I swear they/she never learn: on the morning of news of a major hit/kill of an international ISIS terrorist, KGO's lame, empty, Nikki Medoro, talked about male penises and bare asses. The Bay Area should MOON KGO.

*Upon further reflection, KRON morning anchor, Reyna Harvey certainly has the chops to move on to greener pastures but station insiders feel Harvey is not ready for prime time and that she doesn't know how to play ball. I regretably concur. Harvey is more than capable and possesses a lot of experience even though she's barely in her early 30's. Reyna needs a bit of conventional wisdom, so to speak, and I'm perfectly adapt to teach her the deal.

*Bolo Alert: The foodie chap and Jan Wahl invaded a downtown Jack-in-the-Box.

  1. This may be too little, too late, but I've got to compliment John Rothmann for taking an interest in local topics. My main complaint about the "one trick pony" is that he talked too much about Trump and national politics. I agree with him about Trump, but I can listen to a number of other news outlets to get better commentary on national events than he'll ever be able to dish out. I've wondered why KGO didn't focus on local controversies. Pat's too dumb to talk about local issues, but John can do it. Yesterday he had a great show about the problems in the Oakland schools. I don't live in Oakland, but I listened to it all. And now he's going to do a debate on the SF school board recall. This is exactly why God created local radio -- to cover local topics. We don't need local hosts re-hashing whatever they heard today on MSNBC. I worry that his focus might be too little too late. I hear KGO's days are numbered. Not that the station is going off the air, but that everyone will be replaced with syndicated shows to save money. Maybe a strong push on local talk topics will persuade the suits at Cumulus to not pull the plug.

    1. You must not listen to Rothmann regularly because he has talked about the S.F. school board many times. Personally, it is not a topic that I am interested in, but that's just me. I hope that KGO doesn't get rid of the local programming. That would be a terrible mistake.

  2. Tipping point this morning finally pushing me to KRON. Emma Goss the horrible noise that she emits from the nose talking is finger nails to a chalk board. This problem should have been corrected well before she had speaking parts in the media. Rather than spending on items to wear she should be with a voice coach. Maybe Terry McGovern would take her on.

    1. Emma's nostrils actually look to be very small. It may be something physiological she can't do anything about. Surgery could be a possibility, but you can never guarantee the results, what your voice will sound like afterwards. Sometimes it's better, sometimes it's worse. I think she's a good reporter, though, and is very well-dressed. She strikes me as old school, and I respect that.

  5. When I worked at KRON 15 years ago Pam didn't seem like she was having any fun. Only she hid it from on-air better.

  7. Rich, you clearly meant that Foodie Chap was Jacking in Jan Wahl's Box. And there. Now we all get what we need. An instant diet plan due to the nausea I just created with this post.
