Whoopi Goldberg Suspension Gets Zero Coverage on KGO "Medoro Show"; CNN-Zucker Too; KNBR Punts on Brian Flores-NFL Suit Because They Don't Know How to Handle Real News; Wednesday Wash

NO SOONER had the Whoopi Goldberg story taken place--she was suspended by ABC for her comments about the Holocaust--had the Jeff Zucker resignation from CNN story broke this morning (Wednesday) --all red meat, radio talk show nirvana. The kind of controversial topics that are worthy of discussion and debate (if applicable) but "newstalk" nonetheless and definitely topical.

KGO Radio apparently doesn't get this credo. And subsequently is one of the many reasons why its ratings are cratering and why KGO continues to maintain its irrelevancy.

The morning show mush that is Nikki Medoro (6-10 AM, KGO) barely mentioned the Goldberg item. Buried it, actually. And when the Zucker story broke, Medoro and her amateur producer, John Daly, instead of addressing a cogent, fascinating. and yes, BREAKING news story, went to a boring weekly interview with Oakland mayor, Libby Schaaf. An interview that could have easily been rescheduled for later during the day. But in order to execute real direction, you have to have a real producer and a real news radio host. Daly is not a real producer and Medoro is nothing more than a lightweight dimbulb.

KGO doesn't do newstalk anymore. They apparently have resorted back to a more pedestrian, amateurish syndrome of "family" issues that involved kids and work, daily life and Facebook rituals. Subjects that are easy to talk about because ad-libbed talk involving real news events; stories thatr are not only timely and real, but worthy and live, are much more difficult to digest and discuss. Medoro can't handle any of this. But a daily chat about her kids and softballs for a cheerleader mayor? Pronto.

This think-on-the-run edict is not just an issue for KGO, it can happen to brain-impaired all-sports KNBR, which is stuck in its own sports bubble; its hosts incapable of talking about real news events that have far-reacing implications and could be potential signature events in history. Brian Flores sued the NFL on Tuesday. Flores, a Black man, alleged the NFL is a rigged coaching network amd that the prospect of getting a coaching job if you're a prson of color (like Flores) is almost impossible and that even if you do, you'll be fired one day without merit (like Flores) and essentially outcast.

The Flores' news, a real bombshell, was basically persona non grata at KNBR. Instead of a frank discussion about a real, compelling, jaw-breaker of a story, the sports-talk AM albatross concentrated on its sophomoric vice of bathroom humor (Papa-Lund) and downright ignorance and amateur act, (TKB).

KNBR is a vast wasteland. They have no idea of what's real and what's trivial. At best, they are nothing more than a shill for their sports team partners and at worst, a travesty of mass proportions that cannot inform or entertain its audience. Like KGO, KNBR too is TANKING in the ratings.

It goes to show how once-mighty legacy stations have regressed into a mind-numbing oasis of non-performance status and radio blasphemy.

What a TOTAL ABOMINATION.

    1. Exactly.

They are NOT going to talk bad about the Jeff Zucker. He who singlehandedly turned the once great CNN into his anti-Trump weapon. He dictated 100% of the negative coverage day in and day out (down to the chyrons) and twisted millions of American minds against Trump (admittedly a moron) and the Republican party. All because of his longstanding feud with the orange one from their days at The Apprentice on NBC. For proof of this see: the CNN whistleblowers that quit the network and came forward about the propaganda being spewed on that station because of Zucker.

    2. We need truth, not propaganda. Report the news. Stop manipulating public opinion.

  2. KGO hosts decide what they are going to discuss, period end. More importantly, KGO hosts haven't had their own producer since the December budget cuts. Nikki and her board op have taken on most morning production duties. The 3 remaining producers provide content and are spread thin across the entire lineup. They book guests and execute live broadcasts.

  3. So, since 95% of American jews classify themselves as white, what should the category be, to not offend? Should it be "Semitic"? If so, you'll have to include Palestinians and other Arabs, who are also semites. See how silly this gets. Will all Jewish- American women with blond hair and fair skin and cosmetic adjustments now have to be called "persons of color". I thought the "View" was a show about conversations between people of different perspectives.

    1. Isn't Judaism a RELIGION? Why all of a sudden is it a race?

    2. Saw the head of the JDL on CNN the other night and even he said there's Jews of all races, so I'm confused...

    3. 8:58, that should be "ADL" (Anti-Defamation League), not "JDL" (Jewish Defense League). Very different mission, very different tactics. JDL has been defunct for more than a decade.

  4. Man Rich, I watched and heard what Whoopi said, and quite frankly, nothing she said was wrong. Jews are NOT a race at all, but an ethnic group of people, and even that is a stretch. If I join a synagogue, have I changed my race then? Of course not. Anyone who has taken a science class knows for a fact, that there are ONLY THREE distinctive races of people; They are Caucasoid, Mongoloid, and Negroid. Some people may obviously be of mixed races, but there are only 3 races. Anything else is a difference in ethnicity, or culture, such as the differences between French and English. Both are predominantly Caucasoid, but they are very different CULTURALLY. What was done to the jews WAS exactly as Whoopi said but it was NOT anything to do with race at all, as she said, it was white against whites.

    1. @10:26am
I had a similar take-away from what she said. However, I've been wondering for years, why hasn't anyone called her out for Cultural Appropriation for changing her last name to Goldberg b/c "Johnson wasn't Jewish enough" to make it in Hollywood. I find that calculated maneuver to be more egregious than any of her ignorant comments.

  5. It doesn't benefit KNBR to discuss Flores. If they say his lawsuit is meritless, they're "racist". If they saw his lawsuit is legit, they're part of the "woke mob".

  6. Your passion about the BS on the local radio stations is admirable and true. I suppose someone needs to call them out. But seriously folks, go listen to satellite radio. At least they talk about the issues. Sure, you lose something about not focusing on local stuff, but then again, those local idiots aren't talking about it anyway.

  7. Goldberg was "suspended"...are we in high school now? Did they give her extra homework? Most wanted her fired.....they need to 86 the whole useless boring show...
Really, who wants to sit and listen to a bunch of bitches yap in each other's faces?
Thanks Barbara Walters, for this shit show they keep on for your so called legacy.

    1. " The View" has a huge audience. You are not among that audience.Suspending her was idiotic.

    2. While I personally found her comments to be a bit insensitive and I do not agree with much of that show and their politics, the whole cancel culture, "I'm offended", "fire 'em" crap is out of control. No matter which side of the political aisle you are on. It's gotta stop. You don't have to agree with another's opinion but they should have the freedom to espouse them. Debate used to be accepted.

    3. I agree it was idiotic!! As far as having a huge audience, that is scary, but hey, if that's your jam, knock yourself out. I prefer to not listen to this crap personally and see zero redeeming qualities in doing so.

  8. John hasn't been directly involved with the morning show for nearly a year. He used to produce Gene Burns and only returned to KGO in hopes of helping to turn things around. He's very bright and quite frankly, overqualified. Producers don't choose the hosts they work with and there's a lot of ego involved. Hosts have final say on everything.

    1. Not sure what Rich's beef is with John Daly, he use to praise him. I like this blog for the most part, but Rich should be more consistent. He has all of sudden turned-on John Rothmann, someone he use to call appointment radio. John has not changed, so I'm confused.

  9. Apparently they barely mentioned Whoopie on The View itself.

So many things she's said over the years that, if a white person said them about blacks, they'd never be allowed on a TV show ever again. #blackprivilege

  10. You just addressed the fake MSM and their shills like David Muir. The alphabet networks are to busy admiring the Emperor's new clothes. How dare they call him out on topics that affect Americans, like runaway inflation, the overrun border, throttled supply chain and the failure that is Afghanistan that left 13 soldiers dead and thousands of Americans abandoned?

  12. If a White person, specifically a Republican conservative Trump lover, said what Caryn Johnson (The Whoopster's real name) said, they'd be on their ass out the door so fast. But Whoop-de-do catches a break in our world of social INjustice. Screw the two-week suspension. Time for you to hit the road, Caryn.

  13. The Zucker thing is "inside baseball". Those of us who frequent this column and trade pubs are interested in the story, but the general public is going ... OK, nothing to see here. They did miss out on the Whoopi story because that should have been a real "light up the phones" topic.

  17. There is no place he would rather be. Fake outrage, he really wants to know what you think. KGO is pathetic. Too bad there are no Bay Area alternatives. Lots of out of area listening on line. Patty is lame too, All Trump, All Tucker everyday by John and Patty. Then they fall back on Covid with a whole new fake outrage from John tied into the former president. There platform is older than Lee Hammer.

  18. Nikki M. in the morning show only sticks to topics for 10 mins. "We'll take short break and we come back I want to talk about blah blah..." Of the 10 mins slots Brett and her speak amongst themselves for 5.

  19. Hell no their not going to cover Brian Flores story. Nobody wants to cover a story that has cancel culture waiting outside the door. Not in the Bay Area for sure.

  20. I'm disappointed by the Jeff Zucker story. When I see a headline saying there's a sex scandal at CNN, I'm prepared for something like a producer molesting children or a political commentator pleasuring himself during a Zoom meeting. Or maybe the best one was Richard Quest, who was arrested in Central Park high on meth with a rope around his neck attached to his genitals, and a sex toy in his butt. That's the standard I expect from CNN, the "most trusted name in news." But Zucker resigned because of a consensual affair with a longtime friend. That just doesn't add up. Just a consensual affair? There's got to be more to this story. Maybe Zucker wanted an excuse to jump ship before AT&T spins off CNN to Discovery, and Discovery axes him because of this year's 90% drop in ratings. Or maybe Fredo Cuomo has some dirt on him that's going to be coming out?

I remember the good old days when Fox News provided its share of sex scandals -- Roger Ailes, Bill O'Reilly, Eric Bolling, Charles Payne ... but now it seems the action has moved to CNN.

  21. Knbr really is a joke, and not a funny one. Radio in the bay area is dying and it seems only the last bottom of the barrell staff is left, the talented folks have left for streaming services where they arent beholden to sociopath corporate types

  22. Although Rich has repeatedly made it clear how he feels about the Niki Medoro show, I can only concur. In fact, I think she is getting worse. I tried listening a few times this week, but her giggling and constant talking about herself is a turn off. I turned on Armstrong and Getty, I use to like them, because they were funny, now they are very political, and not as funny. However, I prefer them to Niki's giggling (and I'm a woman) when it gets too much, I turn on KCBS.
