Why I've Soured on John Rothmann; KGO Radio Talker's Faux "Outrage" Too Much to Stomach; Jan. 6th, '21 Anniversary Show

NOBODY HAS BEEN A BIGGER ADVOCATE of John Rothmann than ME. I've said for years the political/Middle East/Presidential historian is APPOINTMENT RADIO.

Until now.

Today (Thursday), Rothmann on his KGO Radio show (4-7 PM) was his dreaded, excess self with another hour of FAKE "outrage" and emotional blather. I put outrage in quotes because Rothmann's continued, pained screamathons was a hard listen. It was the anniversary of the Jan. 6, '21 attack on the US Capitol. All well and good to talk about the incident, its aftermath, the legacy, etc and talk-show fodder, perfect for KGO only Rothmann's pedantic rile was too much to take.

Rothmann took a usual nutjob call to open his show and went heavy duty "outrage"--"How can you react to this rubbish?" He began yelling and raising his voice and talked as if he were a 3rd-grade teacher lecturing his students over classroom etiquette. It's the same, tired, outrageous speil Rothmann screams out everyday. And it loses credibility when this faux outrage is normal Rothmann shtick. When you repeatedly pour out the same contrived anger and make a pitch for tired pro-Trump cultists, then your anger is muted and becomes ineffective and dilluted. Obviously, Rothmann doesn't understand this concept.

Furthermore, when you joke and milk crazy calls and act beserk--as Rothmann does almost every night over the same speil, then your anger (fake) loses focus and you yourself lose cred. I happen to agree with much of Rothmann's politics but his TIRED, faux outrages and predictable takes has overtaken him and now he just sounds like a broken record.

  1. There is just una problema with your outrage at John's outrage which you suggest is "faux". His outrage is genuine. He's not talking about an "incident". He's talking about a coup attempt which nearly succeeded. John is a scholarly fellow, immensely well-read, informed and involved in all things political. You liked him when his outrage is directed towards anything negative about Israel. He and thee are both zionists, which you have every right to be. Is the threat to our very American democracy, the constitution which so many on both the right and the left have never read, somehow less important?

    2. Dear Miss Felch, The constitution provides an eloquent system of laws and governance. Its genius is that no "gods" are required.

    3. Christine, I tend to agree with you. First of all Rich has used the phrase "fake outrage" to describe John Rothmann style, so that is getting old. I don't think it is fake outrage, does Rich want John to take calls from someone that agrees with him? Gene Burns was famous for getting into very heated debates with callers, and he was not always so polite to the callers as John usually are. Lately almost every other day Rich write something negative about John's show. It makes some of us readers a little confused, since Rich use to praise John a lot, and before John got back on the air, Rich was always lamenting why Cumulus didn't make use of John's talent. This is not to say that Rich shouldn't be critical of John, but seems to me, John has become Rich's new target is John Rothmann, use to be Ronn.

    4. "He's talking about a coup attempt which nearly succeeded." LOL!

Yes, this "coup attempt" by those disorganized clowns was so close to overthrowing our government. What planet do you live on?

Yes the massive "coup attempt" hyperbole has gone off the deep end with Christine and Rothmann in tow.
Had the "coup attempt" been 5 times as successful, it would only have resulted in a couple more days before the election was verified.
Messy, yes it would have had a few more injuries and deaths, but NOTHING would have stopped Biden taking office on the normal date.
The event was important, but NOTHING close to a real coup.
Not for one minute would those participants have had one bit of power.
In fact, had it been worse, then 90% of the republican members of the house and senate would be condemning it to this day, instead of what we now see as they kowtow to Trump in fear.

    7. When I think of Christine Craft I'm reminded of what Nikki Glasser said about Cybil Shepherd her being "crusty", Google or YouTube it, you'll agree!

    8. So you are comparing me to Cybil Shepherd, the fabulous beauty and actress( Last Picture Show- Peter Bogdanovich)? Thank you, lots!!!

  2. If you have a hatred for screaming, raised voices, and predictable screechy outrage, how can you be so gaga Pat Thurston?

    1. I think your assessment of Pat is wrong. She does not scream is might raise her voice, and I don't hear predictable screechy outrage from Pat towards her callers. Frankly she rarely engage in a debate with anyone that disagrees with her, not to the extend that John does.

  3. Deliberately did not listen to anyone on KGO today
knowing it would be bad radio rather than a real discussion.

  4. Rothman has turned into a joke. Fake as can be. Fake outrage. Just a aboslute pleasure to have Kim, Lynn and Karen here. Fricking Romper Room. Same 2 topics. Covid & Trump. I am not a Chip fan, but he did way better to keep an audience. Pat is lame too. Your also thinking of giving Mcalister her own show. What a train Wreck. YOU SUCK LEE HAMMER. Also I think its funny angry Chip keeps tweeting away with no audience. Maybe that will get him a job.

    1. Changes in state labor law require fill-ins to be bona fide employees. There are corporate payroll limits and a lot of shifts that need to be covered. Sometimes a fill-in is just a fill-in.

  5. I’m sad I missed Rothman’s show today due to work. Perhaps Mr Lieberman is more in tune with the sensibilities of KSCO where today the Gene Burns wanna be Fossil aka “Charles Freedman” warned his audience of 20 that today would be the ONLY day ever he spoke of the insurrection. Rothman’s outrage is legitimate as the GOP remained silent on the topic today.

  6. Whether Rothmann's outrage is genuine or just schtick, the real issue is that he is boring and completely predictable. He brings up the same limited number of topics and then talks them to death. His high point was during the Trump presidency when Trump provided him and every other talker new fodder to discuss on a daily basis. Rothmann is back to the basic boring he was when doing overnights back in the "good old days" of KGO.

  7. Years ago a commenter on your blog described John as the "one trick pony" and, now that he's doing afternoon drive, that couldn't be more accurate. His repertoire is limited to White House politics. He can't do any other subjects in an interesting way. I get the impression he was moved to afternoon drive because KGO didn't have any money to hire a better host, so management figured he would do. They were just filling a time slot. I think there was a reason why KGO, in the Mickey Luckoff days, had John and Pat doing weekend overnights.

    1. John does talk politics a lot, which is one reason I like his show. Chip talked politics and Covid. John covers a lot of local issues, and Covid, plus the Middle East, and at times other subject. He talked about the Arbery verdict, I don't see how you can call that a "one trick pony". Most of the right wing hosts that are on the air in this area could certainly be described as a one trick pony, Hannity, Levin a few others, there shows can be described this way, Trump a saint, Democrats the devil, and republicans who dare to be independent and not always support Trump are also dragged over the coals. I find them, or did I don't listen to them anymore, totally predictable.

  8. Getting rid of Chip Franklin and replacing him with Rothman in that time slot will not help KGO's ratings. Franklin was was much better in covering many topics. Rothman is excellent in covering the political world and the Mid-East but not much more.

  9. Rothmann drinking game:
every time he says "you understand"
every time he says 415 8 zero 8 zero 810
every time he says "ant' instead of and
    "testimunee" "mundee"
every time he gets excited about some new development that's "disastrous for trump" "this is huge"

rich talks like all talk show hosts are genuine when they express outrage
it's entertainment and since joe pine, talk radio has been about getting listeners angry so that they wont switch the dial
maybe they should put bearman back on the air so we can have 4 hours of some guy pretending to live in sf and telling us how great he was as the token liberal on fox last night
and sorry...if you are of like mind as those who commented on this thread that jan 6 was a nothing burger...you are ignorant of history
