KPIX Staffers Meh on Ryan Yamamoto

TO SAY Ryan Yamamoto is already a BUST at KPIX might be too early but here's the deal: he's more than just underwhelming--he's a little weak and doesn't have a whole lot of presence. Furthermore, that's not just my take, but several of his co-workers at CBS-SF at 855 Battery.

Yamamoto's 5 PM co-anchor gig is fraught with major issues. He doesn't have a good voice. In fact, he has a TERRIBLE voice. While it isn't his fault, it doesn't bode well for an anchor trying to find his identity, and the Bay Area native, Yamamoto, is in that mode.

It also, and here's the real dagger, doesn't help matters Yamamoto was hired by recently fired ND, Mark Neerman. CBS-SF brass are kind of in a catch-22 position with regards to Yamamoto: they acknowledge (behind the scenes) that the new PIX anchor has a lot of negatives --the woeful voice being the worst--but they also realize they can't touch him, at least for now, because in PC-engrossed Bay Area, a huge fallout could take place if they canned him.

So Yamamoto has a lot on his plate. He's trying to fit in at PIX all the while knowing he's already on thin ice. The majority of staffers at PIX, the few inside the building, are not impressed. It's another lousy time at CBS-SF and with February/'22 SWEEPS looming, the timing couldn't be worse, both for PIX and Yamamoto himself.

  1. I watched last night and frankly he is not good. Seems to have a friendly demeanor and that's it. No presence, terrible voice. Looks awkward in front of a camera. There will be no uproar if he is demoted or canned because nobody is watching and if they did, they would tune him out.

    1. Well, what's not good for you is just fine with me. I like his smile and he has nice hair. Helps that he reads like a pro too.

    2. I have watched Ryan a few times and for a new guy, he was fine. He did a professional job reading the news without any attitude or didn't show up drunk on the job.

  2. The fact that you can no longer fire anyone who isn't white for LEGITIMATE reasons is why no one wants to hire them without threat of government intervention. Whites are the only people today who can be fired on merit. Thus the very problems this legislation set out to cure has only been furthered by it. Liberalism at its sickest.

    1. This is such a joke. People which includes minorities are fired all the time for legitimate reasons. This guy should have never been hired and they have plenty of Asians on the air doing news. Shame on KPIX for hiring him in the first place when this goofy looking dude is not and will never be TV anchor material.

Ryan is not liked within the halls of KPIX. Take it from me.

  4. The man is milquetoast. He'll keep his job for a bit because no body wants to fire a minority, no matter how bad he is.

  5. Ryan's a good guy who works hard and will make it because he'll just keep working while the others eat each for lunch! The voice thing in today's environment is way overrated. OMG, the man just delivers the news! He'll never make it in SF!

  6. Put Allen Martin back at 5 6 7 and 11, he sounds like Dah Lin but better looking than Kenny Choi.

  7. Ryan doesn't bother me. I think his delivery is good, and I really don't see what all the fuss is about.

    1. He seems fine to me, perfectly competent nice young man without annoying mannerisms. Maybe I'm just in an unusually good mood because weathergirl Mary Lee has been gone lately, though I fear that's only temporary and she'll return to simper again any day now.

    2. I jinxed it by mentioning Mary Lee's name! Now she's back, squeaky voice in full force. Oh well, her absence was nice while it lasted.

    3. I saw something online saying that she's been in Hawaii this whole time for a big family wedding. I was thinking maybe it was COVID but I guess not.

    1. >>Starrantino and Yamamoto<<

Say that ten times fast without stumbling and then you earn the right to complain about them. Until then, give them each some time to settle into a groove before writing their obituaries.

OMG!! Can you imagine them anchoring a newscast together?! :-0

    3. She's too damn DUMB. It's obvious a lot of times she's just reading works others put together and doesn't really "get" them. Just listen to her delivery vs. Juliette Goodrich. Truly the classic, overly-made-up dumb blonde who only got so far so fast because of her looks (and perhaps some talents we viewers aren't privy to).

    4. No anchor in our Top 10 market should have to "grow" into the job

  9. Ryan is OK. We'll see how he develops.
Not a high bar to replace Ken Bastida.
Top two Bay Area anchors with high Q score factors.
    Dan Ashley and Dion Lim.
Contrasted with low Q score factor, think Terilyn Joe (the tomato lady)

  10. Yes, sometimes I don't know what these people who are in charge of hiring on-air talent, are thinking. I mean, Yamamoto would probably be ok doing reporting, but as an anchor, forget it. I keep getting distracted by the fact that he keeps tilting his head back and thrusting out his chin. I mean, why does he do that? Other examples though, of completely idiotic hiring as anchors, are Jobina [horseface] Fortson. I mean, she is just painful to the eyes. The only good thing about her is that she is obviously keeping a hair stylist in business, because she changes that crap on her head, that supposedly passes for hair, EVERY DANG DAY! And it never improves! Does she really think having her forehead appear to go up and halfway towards the back of her, is attractive? I don't think so. And yet, this girl is put out there as an "anchor". I finally couldn't stand it, and have switched my morning news to Channel 5.1, KPIX. Len Kiese does a good job, and Starrantino is well, just droolingly delicious to look at, especially at 430am in the morning when the news first comes on. As always Rich, you are doing a great job!

    1. 4:24pm, I couldn't agree with you more. But let's remember, she’s a POC…we need to treat her with kid gloves and hero-worship her as though she’s the second coming of Christ.

    2. And regarding the weird chin thing, give him a break...he's trying to pretend that he's a serious anchorman!

  11. For a guy that claims he's old school you sure sound a lot like the young instant results generation. What did you expect from Ryan? Instant ratings bonanza? He's been what? An anchor for a month? He seems fine. Give him some time.

  12. There is definitely something odd about that guy. I won't be watching KPIX when he's on.

  13. He's painful. He has the presence of a hospital orderly and looks like one, too. I think he'll be gone in a year.

  14. Ryan inhales loudly between lines of copy. It's annoying and distracting. He should work on that or find a cause for it. Other than that, he's not that bad.

  15. Put reporter Jocelyn Moran on the anchor desk. She's articulate and beautiful.

  16. Ryan’s shrill voice grates on the nerves so bad. It is now April and he just seems hopeless; is not front seat anchor materiel. WHAT were they thinking?
