My own NBC San Jose sources say the subject matter of the Olympics --and their coverage--is a sensitive matter at the station. The San Jose outlet is owned by NBC, therefore, its push to concentrate on the Games is to view it as a "business-as-usual" enterprise only what happens if no one gives a damn and you're only talking to yourself. Moreover, doesn't it appear foolish to be sending Wang to Beijing for two weeks, especially given the state of Covid-19.
Nobody cares. A colossal nothing burger.
ReplyDeleteI can appreciate your sentiment however, there are several Bay Area athletes competing in some of the showcase events; i.e. figure skating and downhill skiing, with really great chances at taking home gold. So, some Bay Area people (myself among them) ***do care.*** Therefore, it's not unreasonable for the local NBC affiliate to send someone. (I might have sent someone from the sports department instead of Janelle but ... you know.) I'm just glad they're not sending Raj again. He's just a little too full of himself and a bit of a pompous ass in my opinion. He’s a big fish in a small pond and thinks he’s all that and a bag of crack - and he's NOT.
ReplyDeleteEuropa
I stopped watching the Olympics about 10 years ago. Too many druggies competing and too much corruption among officials. I also stopped watching NBC Bay Area news for awhile because I got tired of all the Olympic promos masquerading as new stories.
ReplyDeleteApparently there are a lot of couch sitters who never ski, snowboard, skate or race.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget aboot the Olympic sport that combines cross-country skiing and precision rifle marksmanship - !!biathlon!! - now that's some good TV!
DeleteI'm fine with it. More time to look at Wang, a real hottie.
ReplyDeleteWhy do lame-ass white guys always get a big ol' boner over Asian women? Stop it; it's unbecoming.
DeletePrecisely how do you know that 11:35 is a white guy? Wow, I really dislike when assumptions are made about race. Oh and Janelle is a hottie regardless of race.
DeleteOf ALL the on air personalities, why was Janelle Wang, the one to be sent??
ReplyDeleteI don't mind NBC's Olympics coverage, per se. What I do mind is the obvious Rah-rah America to the exclusion of almost everything else angles that permeate NBC's coverage.
ReplyDeleteIn Korea the network got a big black eye by not covering one of the three biggest stories of that Olympics; Ester Ledecka's shock massive upset Gold Medal win in the Super G. You'd think NBC would want to do an in studio sit down with Ledecka because nobody would have thought she had a shot at it because of her snowboard background which was closer to Eddie The Eagle territory than serious downhill ski racing. Of course NBC instead opted to interview Lindsey Vonn for the zillionth time; someone who didn't even come close to medaling in the event. Lame.
As for Wang, let her go to China. It means she'll be off KNTV's air a few days before the Olympics and a week after. And that is a good thing...
Idea guy: "I have an idea. Lets send a Chinese woman to China for our coverage of the Olympics."
ReplyDeleteStation manager: "That's good shit pal! Lets also put together a show similar to Building a Better Bay Area to run after the Olympics. We'll make it Asian-centric. People will love it!"
No body gives a shit. Period. Irrelevant. Overhyped. Just like everything else. If the NFL isn't careful, they may wind up in the same boat. Every damn day it seems as though there's a promo for divisional playoff weekend. Real football fans know it's here. Bug off.
ReplyDelete@12:14 No. It's only you that doesn't give a shit. Ha ha ha ha, the NFL has to be "careful". LOL! We get it. You weren't into sports in high school or college.
DeleteMaybe they could hire Gary Radnich and send him to the Olympics as a KNTV special correspondent.
ReplyDelete@12:37...
DeleteToo expensive. They'd have to buy a second seat on the plane to hold his ego...
simply retired and in difficult physical shape. Couch is where you'll find Raddy.
DeleteSorry, not watching the CCP Human Rights Violator Olympics.
ReplyDeleteUS violates far more human rights lol.
DeleteDfg, no doubt.
Delete1:39pm, I totally agree with you. No need to support a corrupt entity that flagrantly commmits human rights violations, and does so openly...and continues to get away with it.
DeleteNo amount of Janelle Wang buffooneryism will get me to watch.
The Winter Olympics will come and go quietly. Even NBC's Mike Tirico is cutting short his duties as host to cover the Super Bowl. NBC is also using remote play-by-play announcers to spare expenses and ensure their health.
ReplyDeleteThe Olympics are essentially irrelevant around here, and have been for a while. It’s mostly old geezers who follow it or watch it. The ratings and metrics prove that fact. I think the Olympics are of slightly more interest in those parts of the country that don’t tend to be as physically active as we are here in the Bay Area, especially during the Winter when a huge chunk of the country is stuck indoors due to the cold and snow.
ReplyDeleteAs far as NBC Bay Area, did Mr. Ego (Raj Mathai) throw a hissy fit when he learned he wasn’t being sent to the Olympics where he could pontificate and listen to himself talk for two weeks?
Regardless, it's embarrassing that they keep sending people there, even if it's a directive from National. Makes them look out of touch aroun here.
NBC is trying to do whatever they can to limit their losses. They'd send Bozo the Clown if they thought it would help their ratings which will suck!
ReplyDeleteJanelle Wang is from Taiwan, not China shouldn't Janelle be unwelcome.
ReplyDeleteWhat a complete waste of money to send an utterly unqualified nincompoop like Janelle Wang to cover the Olympics, a two-week waste of time that few people around here even care about.
ReplyDeleteAnd even if I did give a rat’s ass about the Olympics, seeing Janelle Wang embarrass herself as she tries to provide ‘coverage’ about something she knows absolutely nothing about would mean instant channel-changing time.
I heard that China has already awarded all of the medals to LeBron James.
