Thursday Memo to KGO PD Lee Hammer: It Ain't Happening at Latest Iteration

HEY Lee (Hammer) --here's a Thursday memo: be DAMN HAPPY I continue to write about KGO. You should be so lucky.

Yeah, I'm the only schmuck that still regards you as relevant even if the critics maintain KGO is so yesterday and beyond. I agree. I have tried to tell you as much but your bizarre pickings of late make no sense. I know you have no money; you've been saying that, Lee, for years now, is that your excuse? Rothmann is a good host but he's NOT 4-7 drivetime. Lee. You have to know that. Again, I know your budget is tight but clearly, Rothmann can't be successful in PM drive.

Thurston is fine at 12-4 but you could have put Pat and John together--she Noon-2 and Rothmann 2-4. Then someone else from 4-7.

Lee, Nikki Medoro is a DISASTER from 6-10 AM, she can't interview and her topics (like talking about her kids every five minutes) are BORING. The A25-54 numbers prove that.

Hammer, if this cratering continues, pretty soon your bud, that clown, Chris Merrill, will be a relative Cronkite.

  1. Please put John back in the evenings. Move Stinkki Medoro from the mornings to drive time. Or Patricia. No-one is listening anyways.

  2. Maybe Frank Somerville could fill that slot.

  3. Talk show hosts don't want to be coupled with other talk show hosts.

  4. The role of kim mccallister is confusing, she seems to float in and out of the various hosts shows as a semi side kick in between reading some news and now taking over the traffic..

    1. What's confusing? All news update anchors are encouraged to contribute. They just fired the traffic reporters and added that report to their duties. Updates top and bottom of the hour, and participating when they aren't busy. Pretty straight forward.

  5. John Rothmann belongs in the evening. They need to put someone else in the drivetime slot, and move John to the 7-10 time slot instead of the Ramsey show. A financial show is more suited to weekends or maybe daytime, but not weeknights. People listen to KGO because they want to hear local news and talk. I don't care who does the drivetime slot, but move John back to evenings.

  6. Yeah. Maybe Lee has his hands tied from the big wigs at Cumulus. As far as running a station, I posted he needs to give Robin Bertilucci a call. She runs KFI and runs circles around him. At least they have a news and traffic department, way better hosts, raise $950,000 for Bruno to feed kids who are hungry and have a much better grasp of their audience. KGO hosts would not make it any other market except Angry Chip. He has been angry tweeting since he got fired, although nothing bout KGO.

  9. KGO (hammer) presents shit, the cheapest shit possible to it's "valued listeners". Fat fux in sales dept dont care about us at all. And hammer boy keeps up the lies.

  10. I care that KGO has failed as much as I care that Studebaker's aren't made any more.

  11. Have you noticed how often the fools on the Nibber in the AM - yes, Fraudley Mac, et al., And now ROTHMANN are constantly injecting Lee Hammer shout outs, anecdotes etc. into their shows? Like, enough with the internal a** kissing and just give us listenable content. Speaking of which, I have really, really tried but that KNBR morning show sounds like they are all on speed washed down with an energy drink. Listener fatigue sets in after just a few minutes.

  12. i only heard rothmann's first hour on monday and thursday..on monday he spent the first hour talking about some guy who did a mass firing of people and various people called in to give their experiences on being fired in person..by thursday he must have realized even himself he sucked because he was back doing full bore politics on trump and covid. the lighter kinda of stories he's not comfortable doing, which is way it will be the usual three hours of politics all the time

    1. I agree that Medoro is terrible and she lives in San Jose.

  14. When Medoro was the Chipster's second banana, I told him she was horrible and her idiotic laughter and grating voice and dumb comments would torpedo his ratings. He chewed me out and defended her. Ironic that he's now been shown the door and she blathers on. Lee Hammer is programming moron.

  15. JR's format definitely works best as an evening show. Early evening, late evening, either way. JR's current time slot seems unlikely to be successful, and should be moved. MT, PT at their current times, that configuration works fine by me. I have to disagree w/your comments about early morning host NM. I find her show both informative & entertaining. Also her warm-hearted nature. NM takes her job seriously and seems consistently well prepared. Not everyone's gonna like every topic, but the host must be judged on the show's overall merits, keeping in mind NM's drive-time slot has to be entertaining, but still mostly focused on news; not so much talking w/callers. KGO management already knows what format does the news-talk job best: live and local. Until they return to that continuously from 6 am to 1 am, I expect their "iffy" ratings will continue. I expect JR would say "Maybe KGO's not perfect, but something is better than nothing." Can't disagree, but it's sort of hard to figure why the management there continues to chose a programming line-up they know won't move the needle. My guess, some kind of hidden agenda.

  16. @ 2:41 pm - The issue isn't really the people in the SF cluster like Lee, the issue is with Corporate. Lew Dickey may be gone but his monster lives on. Cumulus' 500 or so radio stations are essentially managed by three regional managers, and for the most part the input from local managers is completely ignored unless it involves cutting costs. People learn not to take initiative and instead to sit down and shut up and do as they're told. The people at the top of the management hierarchy are not radio people and don't know didly squat about running "live and local" engaged radio stations with real community engagement, promotions departments etc. and the phrase "building in audience" is not familiar to them.

  17. 1) Rothman definitely not drive-time host. Move back to 6-9. 2) Dave Ramsey sucks. Nobody wants to hear syndicated programing, particularly about money/finances every weeknight. His show is an infomercial half the time. 3) Firing Chip Franklin was a big error. While Rothman and Thurston are fine, they are both quite serious and not good on the spot fast thinkers. Chip was perfect in those ways (more of a regular joe which contrasted well with Rothman). 4) If you are at all serious about KGO succeeding you can't have the weekends be one big infomercial and you can't cut virtually the entire news departments, including traffic reports. KGO is starting to sound more like a small college radio station. Get serious!
