Sara Donchey and Ryan Yamamoto To Highlight New 5 PM Newscast at PIX

KPIX is supposedly going all out on a new 5 PM newscast--one that will feature newbies Sara Donchey and Ryan Yamamoto--they will co-anchor the 5 PM news, probably starting in January.

My PIX spy says this new team is not meant as a replacement, per se, for any of the current anchors, but Yamamoto was hired back in November to take Ken Bastida's position. Yamamoto is viewed as a potential star; at least that's how he's summed up at 855 Battery. He has local roots (SF) and is considered a strong personality. I'll be surprised by that assessment. Wait and see.

Donchey looks strong in my book. She has a NY/LA gleam and network chops. She might be a threat to Liz Cook. Another potential hail storm at PIX but if it means quality newscasts, so be it.

Everything is relative today, Rich. If he can say "litigious" correctly, he'll be a notch better than Amanda Starrantino. If he understands the difference between jail and prison in copy, he's the next Cronkite.

  4. Sara is perfect. KPIX ka-chinged on her. Now, the other guy? I dunno. Like the other poster suggested, it seems an odd coupling, aesthetically-speaking (Ryan is a perfectly suitable anchor, but the combo seems mismatched to me). Let's see how much it moves that needle. Hey, speaking of which -- who's gonna get the sports seat now that Dennis is gone gone gone? It sure can't be Vermin Glenn.

  6. Sara is HAWT. And, sorry to say, that's what matters most in a TV reader.

  8. Looks to me that these changes are coming from corporate in New York. Seems tome Donchey is just a transfer from CBS LA and not a new hire. Yamamoto also has local roots, so that maybe the key to getting talent. Your report about CBS planning a big blow out at KPIX two years ago is finally happening. Now they can put all the VDLC nonsense behind them and finally make some meaningful changes.

  9. I like it. Solid caucasian eye candy and a solid Japanese fella. No this time. This is going to be big.

  10. If KPIX is hiring so many, why aren't Frank Somerville and all the other disgruntled KTVU news people over there applying?

  11. Ryan is the real deal. I worked with him at KXTV before he went to Seattle. Solid, intelligent, personable, and a really fun guy. He’ll be a good fit. To the naysayers who judge him by his still pic on this lame website, get a life a holes.

  13. Just found out some info about Sara, looks like she earns more $$ and better background than the husband.

  14. Cant wait for the new anchors. Is it just me or does Elizabeth Cook look like a school teacher talking down to her class all the time? Seems like the new hires can read better too and no stumbling.
