Chris Nohr's exile from KTVU (to the delight of all) will not have any immediate impact on the status of Frank Somerville. Frank is pretty much done at KTVU. I've said a DIVORCE was coming and it is, not official yet, but soon. Nohr's negotiated leave from KTVU was accelerated by FOX because she was viewed as too combative and controversial. I'm using diplomatic language, draw your own conclusion. Nohr was almost 40plus years at Fox2, she was on her way out the door anyway, this was Fox being prudent (for a change) and showing her the door, early.
*Speaking of Frank, he continues to essentially HIDE OUT in his Oakland condo plotting his next move. He hasn't given up hope to anchor at another Bay Area TV station but the odds on that have diminished. Whether valid or not, Somerville is perceived as "too much trouble" in media circles. It also doesn't help that he's 64 and a white male. Although he still looks good and regularly works out, Frank is at his sunset years. I see him working OUTSIDE the market, poissibly Sacramento as a destination. He could go work out his kinks and then possibly come back to the Bay Area in a few years. We should know by the end of the month.
*Amber Eikel has survived a HIT by Fox brass namely because she's a woman exec and the ratings at KTVU are good. She is, however, on a short leash and could be a GONER any day now. Her tight-fisted and mercurial ways of managing the newsroom at Channel 2 are still DESPISED by the staff. She is NOT RESPECTED and viewed as an inexperienced SHILL. I'm again, being kind.
*INDUSTRY RUMOR: that former KNBR programming suit (and current 49ers broadcast exec), Bob Sargent, will be OFFERED the world to FIX 95.7 FM (all-sports) "The Game." My sources say Audacy (Entercom) is quite down on its SF FM all-sports station overall. The Game cannot even get a 1.0 rating and continues to LANGUISH and free fall. Sargent would be a great choice to BLOW it all up and start over and moreover, move the station into significance as opposed to NEANDERTHAL status. The problem: Sargent loves the good vibes and relative security at the 49ers and getting him to leave would be minimal at best.
*John Lund will LAUGH every time Greg Papa makes a joke because Lund has to feed the family, I guess. But, like you said...giggle, giggle.
*A well-positioned group of ex-jocks --led by 49ers star, Ronnie Lott--are gathering up a good chunk of change to BUY the old KFRC (610 AM) now "Family Radio" to begin a new, jock-oriented sports station. It's a long shot because everyone on the planet has tried to buy the family radio frequency. It's, as they say, complicated. It involves FCC bureaucracy and that's just for starters. Lott does have LOTTS of CASH but it's gonna require more than that.*Chris Cuomo and his wife split Perry's Friday night --knew he was about to get fired at CNN the next day--after careful thought, left and went across the bay to Walnut Creek and hung out with his buddy, Max, the owner of Massimo. It's a sort of media/Italian/NY genre place in downtown; the last place I'd expect to see Chris Cuomo but what the hell.
*One senior KGO Radio producer, who works at night, privately is an anti-Cumulus dot but she KISSES major ass outside all the time. Her small co-workers aren't impressed, never have been. But she gets by with a pass because Cumulus loves its snitches.
*Pat Thurston ENDORSES her paid ads that hype up vitamins and minerals. She believes in the product. Therefore you can't rip her for taking cash from a company that pays her to endorse the product. She has a right to make extra dough. College (daughters) is expensive.*Former KRON/CNN anchor/talking head, Soledad O'Brien would LOVE to come back to Bay Area; she's now in NYC but where no one knows.
That's total rubbish on Soledad. She's got the Real Sports gig and a national presence. There is no gig in the Bay Area that can compete with that. However, just moving back and living in the Bay Area but keeping on the national level...that's a whole different matter.
ReplyDeleteMarĂa de la Soledad Teresa O'Brien doesn't really move the needle anymore does she?
Delete"Former KRON/CNN anchor/talking head, Soledad O'Brien would LOVE to come back to Bay Area; she's now in NYC but where no one knows."
DeletePlease let it stay that way!
Sorry, but Pat Thurston does NOT have the right to endorse a product that is proven to be cheating seniors out of their limited funds.
ReplyDeleteI would be more than willing to give her the proof of the lies she is spreading when she tells senior listeners that the daily 6 capsules, weighing only 4 grams combined, (one seventh of one ounce) is equal to TEN SERVINGS of fruits and vegetables. These are NOT vitamins.
It is easy to prove using Balance of Nature's own labels and simple math, that Pat Thurston is either woefuly ignorant, or willingly lying to KGO's senior listeners.
Stealing the money of naive listeners who believe Pat is telling the truth.
There is NO EXCUSE for Pat to continue spreading the lie.
These Balance of Nature capsules are not "vitamins" that can be super concentrated. They are simply dehydrated fruit and vegetables.
EVEN prior to the dehydration process the 4 grams of powder only weighed 40 grams fresh. A small apple weighs 100 grams.
Half a small apple is not equal to TEN SERVINGS
Even 40 grams of broccoli is only half of one serving.
Your choice... either Pat Thurston is incapable of simple math, or she is flat out lying.
She is easily proven to be wrong. Her duty is to tell the truth.
Cheating seniors in her own audience, just like FOX News is doing.
Michael Finney could easily prove to Pat Thurston that she is spreading false information.
The simple math does NOT lie. Pat needs a course of basic math.
Either that or a course in ethics, because she is cheating senior listeners who are being duped.
Cheating listeners is not a small issue. It strikes at the very basic integrity that listeners place in the hosts.
Shaky finances is no excuse for cheating the KGO audience.
I agree with everything you said.
DeleteBlame himself for the divorce, affair, not awake on TV, I disagree on the comment he made about the missing couple. That comment was just an excuse for KTVU to fire him. He probably need to take a Morning anchor job due to his age at another station to get some money back after loosing money on his divorce.
ReplyDeleteYou can't blame her but it shows a lack of integrity if they are really as bad as they say they are. But this is coming from the lady that put her bra size on her resume to get hired so she isn't exactly June Cleaver.
ReplyDeleteTalk show hosts making advertisements for health care products, unless all the products have been shown to be safe & effective by numerous scientific reports based on placebo controlled experiments, & published in highly respected refereed medical journals ..... well, it's like former Utah Senator Orin Hatch's defense of that industry, a little unseemly. Not making claims one way or the other, just waiting for such hosts to present the supporting safety and efficacy evidence.
ReplyDeleteI have said it from day one. Whoever runs 95.7 the game so just start all over from scratch and just have national syndicated radio for programming...
ReplyDeleteBut fans want to hear about their local teams--the Warriors, 49ers, Giants . . .
DeleteAgree with 10:54. I like local sports talk but have zero interest in listening to national hosts talk about only the top star players and east coast teams. It's easy enough to find the national shows if you want them.
DeleteI also agree. The national sports show rarely talk about the Bay Area sports teams. When they do, they talk about Steph, and then kind of hate on him at the same time. I'd rather listen to the local sports radio talk shows on 95.7
Delete''yeah uh-huh''I heard them say ,papa And Lund are on their way,''sure yea righht'' every 2 or 3 seconds is all your gonna hear we reckon.
ReplyDeleteAt kgmz, you mean the pairing of mark t windbag and dan dibley here havent perked up the audience or moving the extremely bored community college instructor matt colski to nights havent yet
ReplyDeleteDibley must have drawn the short straw to be paired with Willard who talks over Dibs.
DeleteIt is the Willard Show isn't it? I mean that is why they hired him Not to be the lackey of the lackey
DeleteI would like a station that played 60’s and 70’s music like KFRC. Having two sports-talk stations is a waste.
ReplyDeleteI would like the same thing, even expanding into 1980's music too. My main hope for any new station with that format would be that they play a wide variety of songs. Don't just play the same 19 songs over and over and over, like 98.8 AM.
DeleteThe radio stations seem to have forgotten about the 60's and 70's and have leapfrogged to the 80's. With Lott's group, there would be a third (wait, fourth with the Ticket) sports-talk station--too much in this market.
DeleteFrankie should pull a George Reading and go down to Monterey/Carmel/Salinas or even Eureka to do the news. Less pressure and if he goes to Monterey/Carmel/Salinas, he could live in Carmel. What's wrong with that???
ReplyDeleteWow, you’d think Ronnie would’ve long matured as an investor by now, especially considering he melted a whole Lott-a cheddar in his past bar and restaurant endeavors. Buying an old amplitude modification station, what the eff?
ReplyDeleteMy sources tell me Max Wolfe (Massimo's Owner and renowned chef) is a trump supporter. He and Chris Cuomo are friends?
ReplyDeleteHelp me square that circle.
CNN anchors were required by Jeff Zucker to report anything related to Trump in a negative light. Even the chyrons. They're all in bed together. The only ones that think they're part of a "us versus them" group are the viewers. The viewers are just lemmings or sheep in the eyes of the networks.
DeleteSoledad O'Brian = Too Much Trouble!!!
ReplyDeleteAside from the Morning Roast, The Game is dull, dull radio. Willard/Dibley is historically atrocious; Steinmetz and Guru is tortured, forced debate; and Damon and Ray is an aggravating ego contest between two lesser lights in the media firmament. Thank God for Bonta and Shasky.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big Bonta Hill fan. He brings the energy on the Warriors pre- and postgame shows.
Delete@9:15- Some of the shows are kind of dull, but 95.7's weekday lineup is a much better listen than the shows on KNBR's weekday lineup. Talk about dull radio, listen to KNBR. LOL.
DeleteWillard and Dibley is ok. At times they can be boring, but at the same time they need time to work out since it's still a new show, and Willard just made the move to 95.7.
At first I didn't care for Steinmetz with Guru, but now that we get to watch the streams of all of the 95.7 weekday shows on Youtube and Twitch TV, for this show, it's not all that bad. Watching them live does give you a different view of these shows and their interactions, as opposed to listening to them on the radio.... I still don't like how Steinmetz can get on Guru at times, but at the same time, they both still work well together despite their differences of opinion on some Bay Area sports topics.
I like Damon, but I don't care for Ratto. Ratto hates everything and kills Damon's vibe. They surprisingly work well together too, but sometimes you have to turn Ratto off when he's in a sarcastic mood or acts like someone peed in his Cheerios. Like last week when there was talk of Steph breaking the 3 pt record at Chase and a caller or Damon brought up the Warrior fans and Ratto mentioned that he didn't care about the fans and that they shouldn't be a factor in this or something like that. It just didn't sound right. But yeah, this show works well, but I still prefer Damon to either be solo or have another co-host.
Kolsky has been ok at night, but I think Covay and Dickinson's night show might've been better even though I didn't think that show was going to last.
But yes, Bonta and Butcher Boy in the mornings are great, even though I kind of wish selfishly that they were on 9-Noon instead.
Soledad O'Brien hosts a weekly program called Matter of Fact that is carried by the Hearst television stations. While the program is not available in the Bay Area, it should be carried by Hearst stations KCRA in Sacramento and KSBW in Salinas.
ReplyDeleteThe big media companies paid ridiculous prices for terrestrial radio stations to get an advertising revenue monopoly. Then, the internet happened and their investments were worth nothing and most went bankrupt. The FCC should compel these owners to sell as a public good. The stations should be in local hands when possible and serving local interests.
ReplyDelete- I wonder if Nohr, like Somerville, has issues off the premises.
ReplyDelete- If Sacramento's FOX40, KTXL, doesn't want Somerville, which of the other three Sac stations would need him? KCRA - Sac's NBC3 - seems like the best fit, but is there room to add him?
- Ratings are still good for the 10:00 News and elsewhere? Thought they were dropping like anvils.
- Sargent is why the Niners ignored the Faithful and replaced Ted Robinson with Greg Papa. A personality like that fits better in media than in the NFL, though not by much.
- Waiting for the Cloud Clown ax to fall on the Lewd One.
- I guess the oldest surviving Hall of Fame No. 42 - the other is Yankees great Mariano Rivera, after Warrior great Nate Thurmond joined Jackie Robinson in the heavens in 2016 - is going to try nostalgia radio for size. The religion world's grip on the 610 dial, unlike the 1260 dial where KYA & KOIT once were, is loosening and may be ready to fumble the broadcast ball to the hard-hitter whose jolts in the culinary work were too much like Mark Bavaro bouncing off him when the 1986 all-time best New York Giants team came from behind at Candlestick Park. He better have the business equivalent of Keena Turner, Dwight Hicks, Joe Cool, etc. to help him out and revive the historic KFRC dial. (41 years ago tonight, Duke Sholin's interview for KFRC & RKO Radio turned into a somber nightmare story from New York's Dakota building - RIP John Lennon).
- Thankful that it is the Walnut Creek Massimo's and not the one in Fremont near my old neighborhood. There would have been an uproar by the Nimitz if any Cuomo showed up in public off of Mowry Avenue.
- Sad days continue at KGO Radio. Smh
- Thurston appreciates the money, but is she well versed about the company and the industry?
- As long as Bryant Gumbel wants to continue to employ Soledad O'Brien at his HBO Sports show Real Sports, can't see her returning to the Bay Area, unless she's allowed to do a coast-to-coast flight hopping juggling act.
O'Brien is another race baiter just like Sidner. They are both just god awful and have no place in bay area journalism. The last thing we need is more media stoked division.
ReplyDeleteAre they really?... Sidner used to work for KTVU years ago
Delete"It also doesn't help that he's 64 and a white male."
ReplyDelete"Amber Eikel has survived a HIT by Fox brass namely because she's a woman exec and the ratings at KTVU are good."
I don't think any reasonable person these days would much doubt the veracity of these two statements, but I do find it amusing that this can be said during a time in our history where supreme importance is put on the rejection of racial and gender discrimination.
@4:16. Former KION TV (CBS) employee here. Salinas-Monterey market news anchors are paid minimally. KION is run on the cheap. "MMJ's" are usually fresh out of school. Even worse than Fresno. Unless Frank was willing to get paid a pittance - like really a pittance - t would never happen. KSBW has had Dan Green and Erin Clark for more than 15 years - they aren't going anywhere. The Fox affilliate here KCBA contracts with KTVU for their news programming. Frank could elevate the market, maybe, but there is no money. Going from a top 5 media metro to like 120.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Let’s not forget the dynamic married duo of Marc Cota Robles and Jasmine Viel. Both BOLTED from Salinas as soon as Los Angeles called. Tough to imagine Frank Somerville and his bruised ego driving to Salinas in his 911 for peanuts.
Delete95.7 should hire Otis III to run it he couldn't do any worse
ReplyDeletehaha. Thanks man!.... It's all good. I have my opionions on how I would probably do things there, but I have no experience. LOL
