All this comes when, (have you heard this before? Yes) KGO is in dire straits. The morning is a MESS. The RATINGS are cratering. The MORALE is DOWN! Way down and OUT. The Nikki Medoro show is crumbling and Mark Thompson (and his inadequate producer) is mired in TOTAL SHAMBLES. And therte's a growing feeling of frustration and ANGER!. "Total turmoil," one Insider told me.
*Weekend issues at the local TV News outlets? As numbers further decline, it's FRUSTRATION central at the core 4;how much so? Only one station brought in food for the staff on Election Day: KRON.
*"Out of control"--that's what a local broadcast observer told me. The character, a North Beach regular, described the scene of ABC7 staff on a Sunday morning--clearly NOT building a better Bay Area. The natives are running the asylum.
*Speaking of OUT of CONTROL: Greg Papa's play-by-play account of the 49ers mundane win in Philly. A routine contest that was benign and September ordinary but with Papa's SHOUTING was made to sound like it was December urgent. Come on, Pop, get real. For a change.
*For Chip Franklin to AID his friend in the morn, the Nikster, Chip will need (and expect) extra cash-- which Cumulus says they have none which means a shit load of problems for the Cloud bosses to ponder and they will.
I disagree re Papa. I watched the first half of the game on TV, cringeworthy performance by the 49ers, the broadcast team Fox had calling the game wasn't any good. Won't get into that now.
ReplyDeleteI listened to the 2nd half on the radio (Papa and the lunk head) while doing yard work and I thought he was excellent. Great descriptions of the action, formations and situations. It was engaging. There was a lot to be excited about (in the 2nd half) if nothing else than the team was so flat in the first half.
Papa & The Lunkhead sounds like an awesome mid 70's punk band
DeletePapa's sport's knowledge is pretty good usually when he is not being silly. I think his problem is that's not really enough anymore, is it? Especially at his age starting over with another team.
DeleteChip should be paying KGO to let him on the air, not the other way around. Not sure why anyone thinks why combining two obnoxious dumbshits will help anything.
ReplyDeleteWhen they were together every show involved relentless snark, mocking, and ridicule to anyone with an opposing viewpoint. It turns the listeners off.
DeleteNikki Medoro is getting everything she had coming to her.
As long as Papa isn't anywhere near a television calling a 49ers game, I couldn't care less what he does on the radio side. He's an arrogant you know what.
ReplyDeleteSo he acts like a Democrat? Gotcha.
DeleteJust curious Rich, did Papa and Jughead call the game in Philadelphia or from home? I'll hang up and take my answer off the air.
ReplyDeletePlease stop belittling Jughead. Its Lunkhead.
DeleteI watched the Niner game on Fox and listened to Papa/Ryan via SiriusXm. I was amazed at the amount of mistakes Papa makes. Either he's flat out wrong, or he assumes things which aren't happening. Maybe Ryan is distracting him or he's trying to keep track of too much stuff. It's kind of annoying.
ReplyDeleteMaybe KGO needs new producers, as well as different talent.
ReplyDeleteDo you find it unprofessional that Papa refers to Jimmy Garoppolo as, "Jimmy"? I think it's too familiar and lazy.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Papa's way-to-early and definitely over-the-top "Touchdownnnnnnn Sannnnnnnn Frannnnnn-CIScoooooo" will in future games await the official replay review from the NFL HQ before being uttered? A listener can dream, can't he?
ReplyDeleteKgo needs to just go to a john Rothman books on tape 24 hour marathon all from his 15000 personal collection
ReplyDeleteJim Eason where are you when we need you???
ReplyDeleteHow I miss the old KGO
ReplyDeleteChip has a serious problem with saying "you know" about 10 times a minute. He can't complete a sentence without saying it once or twice.
ReplyDeleteI suspect KGO doesn't have a program director who can review air checks with hosts and offer suggestions on improving their performance. This "you know" problem sticks out like a sore thumb -- something that wouldn't be allowed in a small-market station.
"You know" is a filler phrase, something a person says almost unconsciously because they're not prepared and don't know what to say next. It diminishes a speaker's credibility and distracts from their ability to communicate.
Someone in the higher ups at KGO needs to tell Nikki and Brett, no one cares about your kids stories. How many times we need to hear about your Brett's daughter and Nikki's children.
ReplyDelete4 hours show jumping from topic to topic. Important topics, mentioned right before the hour or half hour then "ok coming up next, we will talk about...."
Wait that was it on the previous important topic!
