Claud Mann (l) Elaine Corral and Mark Ibanez |
Ibanez followed a legend at Channel 2, the late Gary Park. It was smooth sailing from Day 1. Thus the evolution of "That's the Sporting Life' was at 2 Jack London Square.
Ibanez is a Napa native and overall good guy with just a few personal blemishes but we all have skeletons in the closet.
Anyway, CONGRATS to Ibanez.
I use a wheelchair and met Mark at the 1984 Super Bowl press conference at the Hyatt in SF. The NFL commissioner was to speak and other NFL players. I tried to get in but security stopped me saying press only. Mark saw this and gave me his press ID and let me sit with him and his KTVU crew. Congratulations Mark, and thanks for a great day.
ReplyDeleteNice story, and a nice entry by Rich as well.
DeleteI frequently saw Mark at Candlestick back in the late '80s and early '90s. During those exchanges, he was always friendly and down-to-earth. I also have some relatives (including my mom) who were traveling via commercial airliner, in the mid '90s, and they said that they had a very nice visit with Mark during that flight. My mother was elderly, and had health challenges, at the time. She just lit up, however, when she shared her account of Mark's pleasant manner!
Congratulations, Mark! We've enjoyed your work and presence during the last 40 wonderful years of the Sporting Life in the Bay Area.
40 Years!! What was he 12 when he started/ Maybe 16 with that moustache. :-O
ReplyDeleteI met Mark in Scottsdale during 2017 Giants spring training. He was with his two man crew doing a street part. I went up to him, said hey Mark, Yada yada, whatever....and he was just as pleasant as could be....as well as his crew. Congrats Mark on your 40th at channel 2.
ReplyDeleteSincerity only goes as far as you fake it, Rich.
ReplyDeleteCongrats, Mark.
Ibanez couldn't carry Wayne Walker's jock.
ReplyDeleteNow really, who would want to carry someone else's Jock???
DeleteWayne Walker? You have to be kidding. Nice guy, but in his later years became the blue print for mailing it in.
DeleteThat pic reminds me how Elaine Corral was railroaded out of town because the the bosses thought she was getting to old and wanted a younger prettier Leslie Griffith. Of course they will say she quit because she wanted more money and a chance to do the lead stories. Something Dennis Richmond never would have accepted.
ReplyDeleteElaine Corral was hardly a victim and railroaded herself out of town. And everyone was happy to see her go.
DeleteTime to step aside and let someone else have a seat.
ReplyDeleteYeah bring in Vern Glenn!!
DeleteJeez, I remember watching him when he did sports in Sacramento.
ReplyDeleteI'll never forget the image I have of Marc Ibanez running around the 49ers sidelines at Super Bowl XIX (at Stanford Stadium) like a 11-year old kid who just saw his first nude pic...acting immature and all giddy instead of being the responsible journalist / news reporter that he was supposed to be. That told me all I needed to know about him, and that was over 30 years ago- that he was an arrogant, self-absorbed clown who thought he was God's gift to the universe.
ReplyDeleteI met Mark when I had a short gig at KTVU in the early 2000s. He usually passed me where I sat and acknowledged me. Even though I didn't have much interaction with him, he did know my name. I remembered I was shocked when he said it. Nice guy from what I can tell. Happily, nothing negative to report. :)
ReplyDeleteMark Ibanez, what is with that pampador?
ReplyDeleteYou look like a pachuco from San Rafael.
Leslie Griffith...Heather Holmes...that man is my HERO.
ReplyDeleteDid he bang 'em both? If so, good work.
DeleteU got that right, bud! ;)
DeleteInanez is like a doornob, everybody gets a turn.
DeleteSo's Heather. STDs must be rampant in your profession. That explains all the female anchors with red rashes on their chests.
DeleteMark Ibanez is a prick who does not tip Bartenders.
ReplyDeleteWho tips bartenders...they are not waitresses.
DeleteMark is a nice guy witness the anecdotes. He is also a nice guy when the TV lights are off. Congrats to Mark for surviving 40 years in a tough market as well as that hairdo in the 40 year old picture
