Greg Papa's New 49ers' Gig at NBC Sports Bay Area Spells Probable Doom for Dave Feldman; 'Feels Blindsided' by Pop Power Play

CALL IT A COLD AND CALCULATED POWER PLAY

News that Greg Papa will be the pre and post-game host for 49ers broadcasts on NBC Sports Bay Area will have a ripple effect on the sports cable outlet.

It more than likely spells doom for now, ex Niners' host, Dave Feldman, who my spies tell me is fuming over the Papa announcement.

These two big shots have a history and it's not very warm and fuzzy.

In fact, I've learned Feldman feels blindsided by the move and that he was undermined by Papa's behind-the-scenes negotiations to land the 49ers' gig.

Feldman, who is doing some Giants' pre and post game work is more than likely going to pursue other interests, maybe back east where he has worked for several outlets.

A couple of things to note: Papa is coming off 20-plus years as Raiders radio play-by-play broadcaster. His new gig as a 49ers cable host should be seamless but how will the Faithfull receive a multi-decade Silver and Black announcer? NBC obviously thinks the transition will be just fine.

Don't forget Papa's daily radio show on 'The Game' (95.7 FM) --which happens to air Raiders' games and is primed for Raiders talk. Again, which potentially creates a most awkward situation given Papa's new Niners' affiliation.

Maybe Feldman might have to call his buddy, Jim Harbaugh, for some guidance.

We'll wait and see.

  1. Great move by NBC Sports Bay Area! Papa will bring great energy and insight to what until now has been so-so broadcasting. And what better way to stick it to that dufus and out-of-his element "owner", Las Vegas Davis. If only Papa could replace Fitzpatrick on Warriors TV broadcasts, it would be a clean sweep!!

    1. If only someone named FitzPATRICK could replace Bob FitzGERALD on Warriors games, so Papa could then replace him.;-) So, I guess Papa took Feldman's job the same way Fitzgerald took Papa's job with the Warriors in the late '90s.

  2. Now I know why Papa has been talking more about the 49ers recently, as a Raider fan I say good riddance.

    1. In a way, yeah. You kind of had to figure they would talk more Niners after Greg Papa was let go by the Raiders, and the fact that 95.7 doesn't carry Raider games anymore.

  3. Horrible move by NBC Sports Bay Area! Papa will bring a smarmy and douchey demeanor to something almost no one watches anyway. If only Papa could step in front of a bus it would be a clean sweep!

  4. To be fair, Dave Feldman did take Greg Papa's Giants pre and postgame job on NBC Sports Bay Area. You can kind of look at it as them switched roles. LOL.

I did kind of think of Dave Feldman a bit with this news yesterday. At the same time, he didn't really bring anything to the Niners postgame show on NBC Sports Bay Area, which is why NBC Sports Bay Area decided to make changes to the postgame show. Dave Feldman is kind of dry and boring. He probably pretty much only got the job because he was tight with/was friends with/went to high school with Jim Harbaugh, as others have mentioned in the past.

I think he was kind of too serious for that platform. I think having Greg Papa do Niners postgame, will give the postgame show more insight, and it will be nice to have Ian Williams along with Donte Whitner, two guys who played for the Niners fairly recently, on the postgame show as well. It was also good they brought Garcia back for another year. Nice to hear his insights and see his love and passion for the game of football.

If Dave Feldman doesn't get another job in this market or somewhere else, I wonder if he in turn will host more Happy Hour shows or do more Warriors pre and postgame shows to start the NBA season, if their games conflict with a Niner game.

  5. I think Niner fans will take well to Greg Papa. You have to respect his wealth of knowledge about football.

I'm a Niner fan and I'm happy he will be covering the Niners, at least for this year. Yeah, it might be a little weird at first, kind of like when he first started doing Giants games after he did A's games for so many years, as he noted on Happy Hour last night, but it will be cool to see and hear him analyze Niner games.

As far as the radio station affiliation, I kind of wonder if this will lead to the Niners eventually moving to 95.7 when the Raiders leave for Vegas. With Papa now going to do Niners pre and postgame on NBC Sports Bay Area, and with Bonta Hill and the Butcher Boy (Joe Shasky) hosting a Niners postgame show after Niner games on 95.7 this year, it almost feels that could happen one day. It's almost a matter of time.

The Niners coverage, just like the Warriors coverage before they made the move to 95.7, is better on 95.7 than it is on KNBR.

  8. Hmmm, dry & boring. NBCSBA placed Feldman with the Giants; ideal especially during the AT&T Park schedule - dry & boring in the studio with Feldman, dry & boring in the dugout with Amy G, and when the Giants are a mess, especially at the plate, dry & boring when Kuip gets frustrated with the G-Men's poor play. Who knows what Kuip will be thinking in the offseason (not to mention Miller & Flemming futurewise plus Kruk's ongoing health woes); unfortunately, unlike Feldman, who has Midwest & East roots and go back there at any time, Amy G is from the North Bay and is sadly still considered Lockstep's Superstition (which is why Mr. Baer is THE Lockstep Larry - ugh). Maybe NBCSBA has another surprise up their sleeve and they tell Lockstep that Amy G must go after the season, no matter the end result (doesn't look good for the Giants; D-Rod DL-ed by the prickly Puig, 2 other starters done, mid lineup still cold, Cubs-Phillies-Dodgers won't drop down, D-Backs still sneaky, Braves still among the NL Top 3, Cardinals have overtaken the Brewers, Rockies will get hot at Coors Field, and who knows when the Nationals will get hot overall)

    1. Feldman just awful and I won;t miss him.

Amy G i think exactly the opposite. Lockstep Larry needs more Ask Amy G segments and other banal interviews to distract the disaster on the field that the next 2 season will be.

  10. all of the people on the pre and post game shows are just very plain and uninteresting, brodie brazil, feldhouse, ahmed farad, those outsider guys..still trying to figure out laura brit, seems like another kelli ann johnson, solid but nothing really spectuclar

  11. Who cares? Regional sports networks do shit ratings, for the most part, for football because the game is on a national network. If NBCSN Bay Area was broadcasting these games like they do with the Giants, A's, W's, Sharks, this might mean something. The vast majority of fans watch the national pre/post shows, not NBCSN.
