YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Should Jon Miller retire from the Giants' broadcasts next year, (a distinct possibility) yeah, Greg Papa, would be the odds-on candidate to replace Miller because as we all know, he needs the money. Papa also had a brief stint doing Giants TV and radio so there's some history.

*Sandhya Patel, she of the weather variety on KGO-TV during the week has the interest of the ABC network in New Yawk but Sandy loves the Bay Area and has 3 kids to boot. On the other hand, network cash has a way of working wonders.

*My PIX spy informs me that Veronica De La Cruz is due back at the station after a bizarre accident that concussed her and rendered her in deep pain and depression. Going back to the 855 Battery digs, I hope she doesn't have any recurrences.

*I'll bet you a diet coke and Costco hot dog that Mike Shumann eventually gets lawyered up and that ABC has to write another settlement check.

*Mark Ibanez and Bill Martin battle in a nutshell: Ibanez is pissed off because Martin is smarmy and gets to leave the station habitually for dinner plans at home; Martin hates Ibanez because he (Ibanez) is a ladies man and gets a lot of cover from the top execs because Martin can't. It's as simple as that, save for Frank Somerville's occasional sloppy seconds after various newscasts.

Sandhya Patel draws interest from ABC Network
*Ken Wayne at KRON: the inside joke around the studio is that Wayne is Steve Aveson with a better personality.

*It's not that Ibanez continues to have lunches in public with Heather Holmes; it's the fact that there's this obvious ploy to be seen with her and vice-versa. It's not that big a deal; we're all human and we all have our weaknesses --that said, I'd pick a more intimate spot because, you know.

*Speaking of HH, word from the KTVU swamp is she (Heather) wonders why I write about her so often: yo, Heather? Take a look in the mirror and I'm not talking about your nightclub attire.

Hell, you really ought to be flattered, dear.

*Unless KGO really wants to fatten up the check and at this stage I don't know if that's on the agenda, Carolyn Tyler is all but gone come October.

*I remember the days when Ibanez was one of the nicest, most loyal guys on the planet. Now, after recently signing his extension (he'll be at KTVU another three years) Ibanez has become colder than an Alaskan mortuary.

*Bad enough Papa is out as Raiders' PBP guy and so too Tom Flores (color analyst) what's worse? Try working in the sales office at 95.7 FM 'The Game" --yeah, I'm sure that's a great gig selling spots for Raiders one foot out the door to Vegas.

*With Ibanez, it sounds a little personal, right, Rich? Uh, yeah, just a little.

*A fractured mind and wounded body tormented and perpetually anguished by recent tragic events makes the soul susceptible to erratic behavior and overall personal chaos.

Veronica De La Cruz nearing return to KPIX
*It's not that new reporters are automatically rendered as lousy it's just that KPIX has this nasty habit of putting people on the air that are not ready. Clearly not ready. Why the rush? The new News Director is well-liked, I'm told, by the staff but she loses marks because before you throw the newbies on the air it would be nice if they had a little preparation, some rehearsal, something like that because now, sorry, the presentation looks like el crappo.

*If Joe Vasquez were to just admit that he too is a ladies man then all would be just fine. Joe seems to think it's his fault that a good majority of women in the SF gulch thinks he's, well, hot. Vasquez is married and feels awkward --Joe, your wife is quite happy and pleased and not concerned about your apparent hotness. Just keep the checks coming and try to dress down occasionally but trust me, you're good.

Joe Vasquez: ladies man with asterisk
*Don't be surprised if, say, Pam Moore, bolted and went from KRON to KTVU. A hunch.

*Eventually in the not-so-distant future a longtime, veteran anchor at KGO will sign an extension that will make him the highest-paid newsreader in the market and it's about time.

*Reggie Aqui is downright giddy: we're nearing the start to the hockey season.

*Michelle Griego looks so fine and pleasant and professional which makes it hard to believe she has such evil up her sleeve. Maybe it's the water over there at PIX of course when every woman was having babies I also said to check the water.

*Kenny Choi: still on life support and exposing a pulse.

*On the other hand, Christian Ayers is alive, beautiful and wacky. Chris, we had such a blast at that bar in Oakland (nothing crazy, relax people) I was hoping I would be in the front-running but there you went for that guy that looked like he was an extra in "Friends." Damn, late to the game as always, my luck.

*Andre Senior: see, Andre, if they catch you communicating with me they tend to take it out on new talent that have the audacity to reach out to the blogger scarlet letter. My advice, Mr. Senior, is to get some See's for Madam Nohr and car wax for the big guy GM currently leaving the office at around 3. He's such a pussycat.

Image result for Mike Mibach Sal Castaneda
Gasia Mikaelian (left) Sal Castaneda and Mike Mibach
*Mike Mibach: tell Sal that he should abstain from trying to act as if he was born in the hood when he has Walnut Creek written all over him. Yeah, Sal was born in the city technically but ever since wifey took over, he's major ball and she's mega chain. It's a suburban thing.

*Gasia Mikaelian: you're just so into you! But I gotta give you credit because you've cut down the selfies and camera mugs to just twice an hour which given Fox protocol, is just lovely. Now if only you could go cold for five minutes and refrain from that giddy smile.

*Larry Baer is quite fraught with fear: It's 'Take your Intern to Lunch Day" next week.

(You'll never read this in the Chronicle)

*Did Frank Somerville pay me off? Rumors abound. No, but he did buy me the tuna melt and a Guinness at Tommy's Joynt. I don't get bought easily unless it involves several "O's" and deutsche marks collected from a Swiss bank, got it trolls? Good. Proceed with caution.

FINALLY...

I don't write material based on me wanting donations to this blog. I write what I write; you like it, you'll contribute, you don't? You'll move on and read Leah Garchik --and isn't she quite interesting.

  1. Best of luck, and much wellness, to VDLC and Papa! Neurological disorders are horrible.

  2. Awesome post today Rich. Does KTVU really have room for Pam Moore? And if so, I'm sure Ken Wayne wouldn't be too happy.

  3. When VLC returns, PLEASE do not go back to the dumb, "hip" nightbeat. Or let Goodrich just stay there!

    1. Until she gets her sea legs back, it would seem that a less is more approach would be better for VDLC.

    2. How about just "until she gets her sea legs"? Period.

    3. "How about just until she gets her sea legs? Period."

My answer to your question, 4:30, is no. Brevity wasn't a priority in the 2:26 reply, and it isn't a priority in the subsequent comments.

In regard to the Nightbeat format (which was addressed by 2:07): Ms. De La Cruz has reported, via social media, that the set environment and work duties triggered severe PCS symptoms during a previous attempted return. IMO, streamlining the Nightbeat newscast, i.e. eliminating the extracurricular stimuli-laden segments and implementing a less is more approach, would create a more comfortable and workable setting for the disabled VDLC.

Recovery would represent a return of her sea legs, hence my usage in the 2:26 post.

    4. The way she flips her head around when the other anchor is finished and she starts to talk it's a wonder she doesn't have whiplash Must really rattle her brain around in her skull. Maybe it's her own fault.

  4. NO. No Greg Papa doing Giants broadcasts. He's a smarmy East Coast dick who regularly dissed the Giants when he was the A's broadcaster.

    2. Doug Greenwald??!!?? This isn't Amateur Night. I'd rather have David Glass back.

  7. De La Cruz: Biggest mistake in KPIX history. High-maintenance, lots of money, and a recent grad from Bakersfield could do the same thing.

Heather: Even she can do better.

Radnich (looking at IbaƱez): DAMN! Lucky bastard.

Choi-Toy: You indicate or reveal a pulse, not "expose" it.

Carolyn Tyler: No one cares but you, Rich.

    Shumann: Oh, I hope there's a lawsuit!

Sandhya: KGO doesn't deserve her. I'd fly to the Apple if I were her.

What's up with Pero lately? He's seemingly been awfully quiet.

  9. Veronica should continue stay home and take care of her personal issues like always showing her unprofessional work by not showing up like always at all times for the last few years. Liz Cook can just take over her work or add some professional anchors with front experience like Maria Medina on weekdays. It just a waste putting Maria Medina in the streets and fill-in when she is over qualify for the main anchor job.

  10. Seems that small time guy Covey on KNBR is just playing out his contract? Been gone for a long time, and now just filling in it seems. He started in Sept 2017, so maybe running the year down. Guess it didn't work out, no surprise. Too bad he quit his Uber gig.

    1. Papa doesn't have that smooth, baritone voice that you need to do baseball play-by-play. I like Miller, and hope he isn't going anywhere.

  13. - I know RL isn't an Allen Martin fan, but when VDLC returns, how Martin handles any possible PTSD moments between the PIX 6 and Nightbeat newscasts will determine what Rich posts once he evaluates VDLC's first week back.
    - If Lockstep Larry digs Papa, and Miller admits he doesn't have the 100-162-game energy anymore, no one should be surprised if Greg Papa accepts Mr. Baer's contract offer.
    - Love that Circle7's Sandhya Patel and PIX's Christen Ayers are happy with where they are and are uninterested in bigger checks at bigger places.
    - If Shu is lawyering up, I wonder if the recommendation came from an ex-49er teammate.
    - Martin has been unhappy at The Firm for years.
    - Sad that Ibanez's persona has changed so much after the extension. I remember his consummate professionalism early on. Just awful that Mark has become clearly FOX-ified.
    - Holmes flirting with the Sports Director or any KTVU colleague? Gee, what a surprise! Keep dissing HH, RL!
    - Sad that Circle7 still won't do a thing with Trixie. That makes Tyler's likely tenure conclusion in the fall more inevitable. Disney HQ's orders to remove her, if there were or are any, are being clearly ignored. Shouldn't that be glutton for punishment all across I-80 from NYC to SF?
    - Speaking of consummate professionals, that's how Tom Flores is handling the end of his latest Raiders tenure. Three tenures have ended so far - QB in the 1960s, Head Coach in the 1980s, now Analyst in 2018. I think he may still be a consultant. Still, one reason for Flores' impressive reaction is that he remembers when Musburger was right there the last time the Raiders won a Super Bowl, on CBS, with Madden analyzing Squirek, Allen, etc. Good luck charm for the Silver & Black? Right now, most of Raider Nation says No!
    - If handling The Firm is easier than handling The Bentley, then Pero at KRON, and KTVU wants Pam Moore, then why not?
    - Make it official, Circle7 and Dan Ashley! (Ashley is anchoring the AIDS Walk first; hence, the wait for his new contract extension?)
    - It would be interesting to see the News Donny meet the Real Donny. How would both react?
    - How is PIX's new ND getting along with Griego?
    - And finally, if Disney & Shu can't reach a settlement, do the Dubs get dragged into a possible litigation mess?

  16. Veronica always got some issues with her personal life affecting her performance on TV and not showing up. First, if you google online, you will read about her story about her struggles being a single mom with a child. Second, she has personal family issues seeing members of her family gone one by one within a few years. Her personal issues especially with her child should consider her changing careers and be a stay at home parent. Who wants to watch a reporter showing up if she wants and not showing up due to her personal issues which no body cares. For family issues, it just happens, it happens. For her current personal issues, she should learn how to protect herself on the first day making some serious medical help and move on afterwards. One reporter who should be LET-GO.
