*AS I speculated , Greg Papa reached out (through an intermediary) to Giants' frontman, CEO, Larry Baer; it was a proposed "get acquainted" lunch --a schmooze to talk about who might be the #1 broadcaster in the booth in 2019 should Jon Miller retire or leave for personal reasons (which could happen given Miller's desire to return or not to return)
Problem here is twofold --one, Papa's not great on baseball; probably his worst sport to broadcast. Second, knowing Baer's track record on hiring play-by-play guys, he'll want a BIG name to replace Miller; it's his track record. Papa doesn't fit that bill.
*Papa blathers on and on while his radio sidekick acts aloof. It's as if there's no one else in the studio besides Papa. Which, having listened to the other guy, is probably better because I don't know why the other guy exists other than to direct to Pop which is poorly executed even if it's on a station that nobody can hear in the local Bay Area.
Greg Papa dances with the devil |
*Looks like the ABC interest in Sandhya Patel remains hot even if Patel is very happy at KGO-TV; translation: she's not going anywhere. I think.
*When you think of Larry Baer, by the way, also think Jack Davis: this guy. Because although Baer likes the room, it's Davis who stirs the drink. Trust me. Better yet, the next time you go to AT&T Park, think Jack Davis because without his support, there is NO ballpark. Again, trust me.
*I will say this --repeat this-on and on and on...the Chronicle will NEVER EVER report on any kind of Baer malfeasance having to do with the Giants; not that there's anything onerous or alarming going on, but oh, say, a few things like, well...use your imagination.
*Henry Schulman is so far up the Giants' ass he has volumes of brown toilet paper in his trunk.
*There's a guy that loves to kiss a lot of ass and was so determined to get on the Radnich/Krueger KNBR show that he called and texted Krueger twenty times one day: Steve Berman of the Athletic. I wanted to tell Tim Kawakami but I assume he knows --Tim is a great guy. But he can be difficult at times too, in which case: BLOCK TIME!
Berman, say insiders, was so enamored of Kawakami, he bought him (Tim) a hundred t-shirts that say in black letters: "I'M GONNA BLOCK WITH YOU!"
*Kevin Frandsen seems to have the support of KNBR PD, Jeremiah Crowe, which could explain why Frandsen, the ex-Giants' jock is on the station almost every minute less the toilet paper and pillow ads.

*KTVU: oh, shit, you'd fuck up a wet dream.
*Dear Frank Somerville: why do you insist, almost beg to do another apology? I hope they (management) at least gave you extra dough for the Porsche tune-up.
Seriously, KTVU, you could have just played it safe and posted a picture of the murder victim, Ms. Nia Wilson, in the literally thousands of images on-line and you chose THAT picture? Talk about WTF!!?
*Yes of course they'll blame it on the graphics people; all one of them.
*Sal Castaneda: really, never thought you'd be the Mark Ibanez of the morning. (Not Sports)
FINALLY...
YOU HATE PLEDGE BREAKS?
I can't blog and write entertaining posts with a few nickels on me. It actually takes time and money. The Shumann reporting and effort requires a lot of patience and can-do, not to mention the 86,000 minutes (or so) on the cell phone texting and calling. It's OK, I don't mind getting the story that no one else wanted. You got it and I'm happy. But it's tough work and had I had some funds in the bank to relax later, pay some bills, get my meds and such, I'd be even more relentless.
This sounds self-serving and it is: if you enjoy reading me and look forward to an everyday fresh blog then please make a donation. It's not going to send you to the poor house and it will enable me to write the stories that you'll never read in any other publication both on-line and off.
To Donate to 415 and Make a Contribution: Simply scroll down the right side of the blog to the Pay Pal "Donate" button and click on it and follow the prompters. It's fast and easy and I will e-mail you or call you thanking you for your contribution.
I agree that Tim Kawakami is great, but can be difficult with all that Twitter block nonsense. But he does deliver the info. Like, I think he got the whole Greg Papa could be sniffing for other job opportunities speculation right well before all the recent stuff happened.
ReplyDeletePapa has a sidekick that kisses his ass during the show.
ReplyDeleteCorrect, that's all he does, the guy is worthless.
Deletewell bontay is really bad, but they had matt steinment on last week with ratto, it had to be the absoulte worst three hours of radio in KGMZ history which is saying a lot with all the horrible people they have had there over the years. steinment has no bussiness being in the media, he is extremly boring, doesnt know anything, and has the most annoying, irritating voice there..
DeleteWhomever committed the so called Gaffe on KTVU, Channel 2 about Nia Wilson needs to be Fired...Pronto!
ReplyDeleteI assumed the Schulman is on the Giants payroll. Always with the company line.
ReplyDeleteI've seen six-year-olds with better delivery than Sal Castenada.
ReplyDeleteYou have to work your butt off to get a Bachelor's Degree from a State University. At U.C. Berkeley, you only have to get admitted.
1) No one cares about the Schuman story, Rich.
ReplyDelete2) Frandzen is really bad. He's like a locker room jock that isn't funny. A meathead.
3) The Game should talk about the Giants because they remain more interesting than that team in that dump that will NEVER win a championship. They're the Bay Area Raptors.
4) You're using memes that are 10 years old.
5) Who is Jeremiah Crowe?
6) Papa is the only reason I listened to Raiders games. What a bad idea. Musberger is flat out annoying.
The Giants are more interesting than the A's, is that what you're saying? Ha-ha-ha, now that's funny.
Delete"...that team in that dump that will NEVER win a championship."
DeleteI remember attending Game 1 of the '89 World Series, and that is what the A's fans were saying about the Giants!
8:58 PM - well said....some Giants fans are arrogant and cocky, one thing that always shuts them up is bringing up 1989.
Delete7:39, that was 30 years ago. Why would they care? The majority of the A's roster wasn't even born yet the last time the A's won a world championship...
Delete10:21 - does that mean it didn't happen, do we only recognize things that happened within the past 10 years? If so I guess I should erase those memories of personally seeing the A's win 3 WS Championships in a row. But no, I won't forget those memories and I shouldn't, same as 1989.
Delete"*"The Game" talks about the Giants more than the Oakland A's which is always the proper thing to do when your the flagship station for the Oakland A's."
ReplyDeleteCmon, Rich. If the A's were drawing big ratings and big crowds to the Coliseum, both 95.7 and KNBR would be talking about them. You know it's all about ratings and the fact is that there are more Giants fans in the area than A's fans. Don't be so obtuse.
5: 29 PM - There's already KNBR for Giants fans, so give me a break with your "more Giants fans" BS...there's also a lot of A's fans who want to hear their flagship station talk about the A's, get it? The Giants are going nowhere and they're boring, while the A's are a good, young, exciting team, possibly going to the playoffs. Did you see the crowds last weekend? But let me guess, all Giants fans, right?
Delete6:55 PM - Trying reading before responding next time. KNBR and 95.7 are both sports stations that have broadcasting deals with each team but ratings are the name of the game. If the A's drew big numbers, both stations would be talking about them more. The Giants average 39K per game and the A's can't even draw half that, at 18K, so there are, in fact, more Giants fans.
DeleteThere's a reason the Giants have a full hour pregame on NBCSN Bay Area whereas the A's only get a half hour on lower tier NBCSN California. It has nothing to do with how exciting either team is at the moment. If the A's were good for business, more business would be done with them.
As for the crowds last weekend, you're kidding yourself if you don't think the Giants fans were a large part of that. If they weren't, how come the A's can't sell half the seats Giants fans can? Don't be so emotionally invested about business. It's not personal. The A's are a fun team to watch, but the bottom line is they draw a fraction of the eyeballs that the Giants do. I'm not saying that's good or bad, but it is fact.
And I guess the ballpark each team plays in has nothing to do with that, right? We need a new stadium, you don't have to be a genius to know that. Take a look sometime at the numbers when the Giants played at Candlestick. And also take a look at the (phony) attendance numbers towards the end of last year when the Giants totally sucked.
Delete2:29 PM - Stadiums have to do with it, sure. You know what the stadiums have nothing to do with... TV and radio ratings. Back to the point, the Giants draw better numbers and that's why 95.7 talks about them more. Plain and simple.
DeleteAnd I've heard their ratings suck, so what does that mean??
DeleteWhile some of his writing is fine, the fact that Kawakami is essentially a critic. That he will block anyone who dares critique him is hypocrisy of biblical proportions.
ReplyDeleteSandhya Patel looks chubbier each day making her hotter on camera. Glad she came in on that Saturday two week ago.
ReplyDeleteRich, you are 100% correct about Papa's sidekick, his only role is to defer to Papa and kiss his ass, it's absolutely nauseating...you are also correct that they spend more time talking about the Giants, who are going nowhere this year...as an A's fan it pisses me off, there's already KNBR for Giants fans, isn't this supposed to be the A's station? Maybe time to start listening to more NPR.
ReplyDeleteGreg Papa was awful when broadcast the occasional Giants games. Football and basketball are in his wheelhouse, but definitely not baseball.
ReplyDeleteI've been wondering who "Frannny" had to blow to get as much air time as he does (he's on practically every show every day), now I know that it's Crowe. KNBR is getting worse by the day but I will say that Adam Copeland is impressing me, especially with Marty on the weekends. PCon who???
ReplyDeletePapa's megalomania was on full display; the need to be surrounded by fawning parasites, at the Game, reveals much. If he's so great at his craft, why has he been fired by three Bay Area teams?
ReplyDeleteI used to like rick tittle but even he is getting old, he has fallen into the trap of telling the same stories over and over again.. plus i cant stand when he is snarkey (which is all of the time)
ReplyDeleteTittle was good on his Sports Byline show, but now he just repeats the same tired stories. He is just okay on the Game, in between games.
DeleteHere we go again with Lieberman attacking everything Giants.
ReplyDelete//95.7 talks about the Giants more because talking about the A's hurts their ratings. Outside of a home series vs the Giants, Red Sox or Yankees their fan support is pathetic (and in those games the majority of the fans in attendance are rooting for the visiting team)
Or maybe Papa wants a gig with the Giants, so he talks about them more to impress his majesty, Larry Baer.
Deletenot sure where you get that baer would want a big name to replace miller. dave flemming came from the minors.
ReplyDeletemy guess is that flem is promoted to miller status and the gig goes to either joe rizzo (who does sj giants games and who the big club has been highlighting every chance they get) or they reach out to doug greenwald, who did a lot of giants spring training games when the grizzlies were a part of the giants minor league system. doug sounds a lot like his father
"The Game" has no one to blame but themselves... two nights ago, after the A's blowout of Texas, Towny spent radio time talking about that burning issue inspiring us all: Jimmy G dating a porn actress. (One of the biggest "who gives a damn" non-issues of all time) This morning, after one of the great comeback wins in Oakland A's history, Steinmetz and the Guru led off with... football. Ride the wave, gang. The A's are a great story right now, and, although football is extremely popular right now, games that mean anything are at least 6 weeks away.
ReplyDelete11:05 - agree 100%, I was listening today to Papa and his worthless sidekick, they were talking 49ers football, and as you said, after the greatest A's comeback since before they were in Oakland. What a game, go A's!
Deletematt steinmetz is the absoulte WORST person to have a radio show ever.. and his sidekick darryl whatever isnt much better
DeleteBill King dead is better than Greg Papa live...
ReplyDeleteI'm embarrassed by by Frandsen on KNBR. He sounds like a loud-mouthed jock and is so inarticulate in getting his point across. Embarrassing.
