Sunday 415 Media Brunch; KTVU Tumult Stronger Than Ever; KCBS To Tweak Weekend; NBC Sports/BA Turf War: Papa and Feldman; You Want Impact? Pair Morgan and Craft on Radio; Mel Didn't Take Sussman Crap on KSFO; Lee Rodgers/Morgan Duo Best Bay Area AM Radio

*Of course times change and environment tends to become less family-like, but there is NO family atmosphere at KTVU anymore with internal battles galore and folks taking sides with people who used to be allies.

The morning, which used to be a programming staple, still is but grumbling has run amok; so-called "leaders" can't wait to go home as soon as their shift is up.

*I guess there is a shortage of on-air people at KCBS: the division head, Don Bastida, had to do this (Sunday) morning/PM traffic updates.

*A local radio industry wonk tells me that he expects KCBS to tweak its all-news format and run more talkie programs during the weekend. Not an old-KGO like iteration; more of a public affairs deal with callers and breaking news bulletins.

"They're not going personality-driven shows, just anchor and a guest and it'll evolve around news of the day," said the observer.

Makes sense here given the man in the White House and 24/7 news developments. Too bad current KGO Radio management wouldn't dump its stupid lifestyle radio crap and implement Trump talk because there's a lot to go around.

*My pick for KGO-TV weekend sports anchor: either Rick Quan or KTVU's Scott Reiss.

*Turf war at NBC Sports Bay Area: Greg Papa and Dave Feldman.

*OK, you want IMMEDIATE radio talk-show nirvana? Pair Melanie Morgan and Christine Craft on the air and let them go at it --a classic two hour political broadcast thriller with good, solid, genuine radio battle-royale sparks and flashes. Entertaining to the max and all of it totally real, straight-forward and genuine. Of course getting them out of a studio afterwards body in tact would be the X factor. Damn, I'd even PAY to listen to these thought provokers.

*I'm opening up wounds here but so what, I've done worse.

Melanie Morgan couldn't stand Brian Sussman, her former co-pilot on the once-respected, KSFO Morning Show.

It was Melanie that wouldn't take Sussman's overbearing blustery and intimidation --Morgan was the key to the program's might and impact while Suss was more interested in becoming the de facto bully. Morgan, too, had a hand in the program's ratings success until she wanted a breath of fresh air and escape Sussman's tyrannical rule and ego run amok --keep in mind, Sussman is a member of Jews-for-Jesus a cult 95% of American Jews despise and loathe en fuego.

My politics are way different than Morgan's; I've said as much but I found her and Lee Rodgers duo the most entertaining 4 hours of Bay Area radio. The show was honest and sincere; Officer Vic (Tom Benner) was lively and friendly; Rodgers' interviews and verbal engagements with Mel (occasionally) and guests were great, Bay Area radio shows.

Lee didn't take any shit and would tell it to your face. It was sort of "what's he going to say today?"-type radio and it worked because you believed it and it struck a chord even if you disagreed. By god, yes, genuine dialogue and sincerity trumps (pardon the phrase) unintelligent, stupid, buffoon-central sound effects that pollute that same time slot on KSFO today.

*NOTE TO ALL:
If you like reading about Bay Area Media; TV/Radio News and commentary on a daily (mostly) basis then please make a contribution; any amount helps and with your help maintain this site as your go-to destination when you want to read about the business.
Thanks, as always.

  1. I wouldn't pay to hear Craft and Morgan. I'd pay not to. That's a lose/lose for the listener. Morgan is a lightweight who wouldn't stand up to Craft, and Craft is overbearing who would just end up being hated. It would be like when Behar beats the crap out of Hasselbeck on the view.

  2. Officer Vic is a big zero

  3. I understand the GM is a D bag, but what is really causing all the turmoil at KTVU? I mean if literally everyone hates him (anchors, reporters, newsroom staff, news director, etc) why don't they just go to Fox and say, we're not going work for this guy. If all 40 plus on air staff refuse to work form him, FOX has got a problem, a big one.

  5. As a Jew I have been around Jews for Jesus folks trying to get me to switch teams and they are a wacky, borderline cult, group. I did not know Sussman was a Jews for Jesus follower, but I am not surprised either.

  6. Instead of messing around with a format that has been successful for 50 years, KCBS/Entercom should do a talk station on one of its other frequencies. There’s a void in the market for local talk, and the spoken word is a better long term investment for that company than music formats that will be marginalized by Spotify, Pandora and thousands of stations available via IP. There would be a lot of cross promotional opportunities between KCBS and this all-talk station. Ideally it could have hosts of all political stripes, liberal, conservative, libertarian. You could even have comedian hosts like Tim Conway Jr of KFI in LA. A SF version of him. There’s a lot you could do with this station that could grow an audience advertisers would desire more that a hip hop station.

    1. What's the difference from what they currently do. During the day, they fo two "news interviews" each hour. Adding callers to the mix would be a mistake. Unsolicited advice:: don't screw up what's working.

  7. Unfortunately, the "hip hop station" has better demographics (namely, the listeners are "younger")

Now, KRAP would make a great name for a radio station.

  8. Hey, Rich. Sussman here. I'm not officially a "member" of Jews for Jesus, but I have supported their organization over the years. I do believe that Yeshua is Ha Shem, and have since I was 21. I also attend a Messianic synagogue (we use a conservative Siddur), do not celebrate Christmas or Easter (Yeshua never told us to), I do observe the Shabbat, obey the laws, and observe the Holy Days. May YOUR name be written in the Book of Life! Suss.

  9. Hmm, I wonder what turf war Feldy and Greg Papa have. They've been on Happy Hour together every now and then and they seem like they can work together. The other night, Feldy and the Warriors Outsiders hosted the Warriors postgame show outside of Oracle for a bit, until they threw it to Greg Papa, Gary St. Jean, and Kelenna Azubuike in Cleveland.

I guess we'll find out more later.

  11. 7:46 has never sold advertising. Age is important but a listerner’s buying power (household income) is even more important. I don’t disagree that talk skews old and hip hop skews young. But there’s more to the equation as far as ad buyers are concerned.

  12. Apparently radio callers are PPM ratings death. That's why talk and sports stations keep calls to a minimum. I can't see KCBS putting callers on the air.

  13. Religion is such a fucked-up concept. American Christianity is especially fucked up. Christians here in America seem to believe that Jesus was American...from the Midwest or from the south. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Jesus from Nazareth? If so, why is he always portrayed as Nordic or western-European looking? He should be dark-skinned...or at the very least, "olive" complected.

And if he was indeed from Nazareth, wouldn't he have been Jewish? Or Muslim? And...how can medical doctors and scientists be religious? Don't they believe in their own professional data/facts? And correct me if I'm wrong again...but weren't the Norse/Vikings...and Buddhists...and Islamists...and Hindus around waaay before Christianity was "invented?"

Religion (Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism) is SO bullshit.

    2. I pray that one day you become enlightened, enthralled, blessed, and Born Again. That you transform, from an atheist Phuc to a Holy Phuc.

    3. I agree with your main point, but one correction - Islam originated around the year 600 AD (approximately). It is an offshoot of Christianity and Judaism.

    4. Jesus died for ALL and he loves ALL, including you Phuc. Christianity is about having a relationship with Jesus, not the man made church. Jesus is all about love, forgiveness, and redemption. Jesus accepts you where you are, no matter what you have done, and can transform your heart if you let Him. I hope your heart softens one day. In the meantime, blessings to you.

  14. Melanie and I did work together once, many moons ago in Kansas City, for the same television station. We liked each other then, and still do. That said, she's of course wrong about everything political. I don't know if either of our egos could stand "sharing" air time, but consecutive shows would be feisty. The old KGO was so successful because you had so many points of view( about things that matter, not tofu recipes or "lifestyle" doo doo ), reverberating and feeding off of each other. I particularly appreciate the comment comparing me to Joy Behar, describing her as "hated". I'd take Joy Behar's kind of success any day.

  15. Rich, I'm not sure why you had to bring up Sussman's religious affiliation. I thought liberals were all about inclusion and not deriding someone because they have different religious beliefs than you. That should be beneath you.

  16. Lee Rodgers used to appear as early as 11:00 pm the night before to prep for his show. He would stay up all night clipping bits, jokes, news stories and sound bytes, reading, connecting dots, printing things out. He would have stacks of carts (later, cut numbers), folders and scribbled notes amassed, by the time he moved down to the studio about an hour before show time.

His show was so mesmerizing in large part because although it was social and casual in style, it was so EXTREMELY well crafted and prepared. He had high-caliber guests of whom he asked informed and insightful questions, and he always had a joke ready. He was a testament to his craft, all politics aside.

  17. Don Bastida worked last Sunday because he is a very nice man and a great boss. I asked for the shift off at the last minute to attend a big event in LA with my daughter. When he couldn't find anyone willing to cover for me, he graciously jumped in and did it himself so I could be with my family. How great is THAT?!
