Marty Gonzales
THIS IS ABOUT TIME; about time I finally paid a compliment to Marty Gonzales of KRON who anchors weekend mornings; hard to believe it's taken this long. There are a few good people at the independent.

Gonzales is one of them

Gonzales is someone who reads well, keeps it straight and simple and also knows how to inject a sense of humor into a newscast without sounding and looking foolish and insincere.

Dave Spahr
He's also one of the few talented newsmen in the Bay Area who asks great questions and can ad-lib very well if there's breaking news. It is surprising, given KRON's myriad of issues, that he's been able to stay there so many years. Stability is a high point. Marty just goes about his business.

He also works well with weather anchor, Dave Spahr, the weekend meteorologist, who has built a small, but loyal following, for his no-nonsense approach and mostly accurate forecasts. Spahr isn't flashy or gimmicky and treats viewers with respect which is probably why he's still freelance and not on the station in an official capacity. He has good rapport with Gonzales and knows how to mix it up.

Gonzales and Spahr are a winning combo for KRON in the morning. See, I actually said something nice about KRON. Call the authorities.

  1. I understand that Marty teaches journalism at a SF College.

Spahr use to be a weather person at KPIX...wonder why he left KPIX??

Still hate the KRON4 commercials....so many AND so OLD....ie Dr. Sonya, etc.

  2. I don't recall Dave Spahr ever being on PIX. He's also been doing reports on KRON4 morning news during the week. He and Lawrence Karnow are good additions to the KRON 4 staff.

I always wondered why Marty Gonzales wasn't on during the week. I guess his teaching job answers that.

I usually switch channels during the weekend newscasts, and now see that Phil Matier is no longer anchoring the PIX weekend morning news, just doing interviews. Too bad, he's one of the best.

  4. I believe Marty was in the Broadcasting Dept at SFSU and has since retired from teaching. Spent many years working with him at KRON when the weekend morning show was a well-rounded diverse show and not the rehash of "news" that it is today.
Marty is truly a good person and a pleasure to be around..

  5. I worked with Marty when he was at abc7. Talented, kind, and just a wonderful professional who has a great sense of humor. Big loss for 7 when he left.

  6. Marty can last because there is nobody in the building weekend mornings. He does not have to see anybody. Plus, the newscast is just a rehash of the week and the day before, really. The weekend morning newscast WAS filled with useful information, not anymore. Just a recap and a lame interview with Yelp expert every now and again...and boy, those really stink.

  7. Marty has flown under the radar for years in my opinion. He just does his job with no fanfare. He did teach ar SF State in the past. My sister-in-law had him and said he was a very pleasant person who made time for everone.

  8. You can't mention Marty Gonzales without also mentioning Ysabel Duron! They were both an excellent Anchor team on KRON Weekends!
