SAD NEWS
Bay Area radio veteran DJ and personality, John Mack Flanagan, died this past Saturday night of heart issues. He had been in declining health the past several years.
Mack Flanagan was an iconic major figure in Bay Area AM and FM radio during the 60's, 70's and 80's with stints at KYA and KFRC.
His "I'MMMM John MAC-Flanagan" voice intro was a popular broadcast signature and the Big Mac was a very nice, very talented, very entertaining man with big time credentials.
Mack was 72.
Funeral services are pending.
His voice was synonymous with Bay Area am radio, especially with KFRC.
ReplyDeleteI remember him from KFRC-FM. he had an obsession with all things Elvis and Graceland that I found kind of off-putting.
ReplyDeleteThat is sad news. Another "blast from our past," gone. Rest in Peace, John.
ReplyDeleteRIP, I remember him well!!

ReplyDeleteGreat pipes - great reel.
Rest In Peace. You're a legend.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about John Mack Flanagan's passing. I grew up listening to him on 610-KFRC. Two memories: when he announced (in disgust) that Cher was hosting an awards show (he was not a fan) and when he announced Boz Scaggs' follow-up album to Silk Degrees and its first single, "Hard Times." He wanted listeners to hear it--why?--"Because it's GOOD!"
ReplyDeleteMan - it is dangerous getting into those KFRC archives on YouTube. You can be "gone" for hours.
ReplyDeleteNobody intro'd a song like JMF.

The departure of Mac is just one more link, lost in the connection between radio and listeners.
ReplyDeleteMac - You made listening worthwhile - Thank you!
KFRC and KYA had the best DJs back in the day. I grew up listening to both stations, and KEWB. These stations truly rocked!
ReplyDeleteNicest man ever! And no one sounded better than Johnny Mack on the radio! Thank you for being so nice to a kid just starting out in radio. Broadcasting needs more people like you old friend. Rest in peace
ReplyDeleteJohn helped me when I was starting in radio - was always grateful and never forgot him...

ReplyDeleteMan - this takes me back. Loved his song intros.
No such thing as song intros anymore. The days of actual "disc jockeys" like JMF amd others are long gone. Everything a radio host says on the air now is scripted and repeated.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't know John Mack, you weren't there, and, sadly, most of Rich's readers haven't a clue, weren't there...damn interlopers.
