Saturday 415 Media Schmooze

Related image SATURDAY SCHMOOZE ...

No, to the reader, who made an incorrect inference that I was being PC and just didn't come out and say KGO-TV's Eric Thomas was "an angry Black man"; really, should have just ignored the stupidity and moved forward but it really bothered me because it's so wrong and so out of touch. Thomas needs to smile a little more and look cheerful, that was the point. I've said for years that KTVU's Claudine Wong should also smile a bit more and be relaxed; I guess because Wong is Asian, I'm anti-Asian too.

*Sooner or later KTVU's internal problems affecting personnel and there's a lot on the plate will affect the on-air product and when that happens the GM from Boston will have to update his resume. For now, he's safe, even though he usually takes off from the office (when he's actually there in the building not watching the cameras) at 3 PM every day. The FOX people are aware of the morale issues in Jack London Square but so far seem not to care. Yet.

*I've done the Sirius experiment and wasn't impressed. I want news and information, some sports and some news-talk. I like satellite radio for some 70's and 80's music and jazz in my car but I don't want to pay the 19 bucks a month; I'd rather just listen to KCSM and pick through the FM maze of SF radio which is sorry, but acceptable.

*Local TV News is so damn profitable that even though nobody really is watching the 4 PM newscasts they still bring in revenue.

*Watch, a week's worth of nice, sunny weather and the drought stories will be back en fuego.

*I like Amy Hollyfield on KGO-TV too but they don't give her enough stories. More Amy, less Laura Anthony, who is about as exciting to watch as Jan Wahl dancing the Macarena.

*KGO Radio is airing CAL Basketball which is the equivalent of listening to birds chirp. I'd rather go to the airport and watch small planes take off.

*Epidemic proportions: The lemmings, especially women, on radio who answer questions beginning with "So..." So, do this: learn to simply answer the question, holy smokes!

*So, am I a "pussy" now when I wrote about the hell known as the flu a few weeks back?

*Heather Holmes is pleasing to the eye? Really, now, you thought I was that naive? I guess it's a matter of taste; if Holmes was a better anchor I might be inclined to rate her looks more than the 6 she is; wait, I'm not being a sexist because I think Jessica Aguirre is one beautiful and classy-looking lady and she's one terrific anchor too, so don't bust my balls.

*How come Pero is still at KRON? Because someone has to run the place.

*THIS JUST IN: As of today, KPIX has not hired a new reporter from Toledo or Sacramento they are looking at a white woman millennial from Carson City, Nevada who currently sells shoes at the local Ross.

*"Rich, you have no sympathy for Ronn Owens!" You mean the same "sympathy" Owens had for his fired colleagues the day after the first KGO massacre by talking about gadgets for most of the hour?

*Neda Iranpour: every time I hear her name I think of Christianne Amanpour.

*See, here's it all in a nutshell: I'd rather listen for ten minutes, Savage talk about his favorite Chinese food dish than Ronn trying to do a Paul Harvey.

*Ethan Bearman: must have pictures.

*Jim Gabbert has about 100 million in the bank so surely he could withdraw about the $15 mill it would take to buy KFRC and turn it into a new KGO but then again, Gabbert is cheap. Remember the old line: "Why did Gabbert use dogs on his TV20?" Answer: So he wouldn't have to pay 'em.

*I'm assuming KGO will let Chip Franklin stay on past 7 PM Tuesday night after Trump delivers his first State of Union address to take calls--or will they not surprise me by running Bearman's taped program on the history of tuna casseroles.

*Hey Ethan, if you're going to rip me, at least have the balls to do it publicly and not in some anonymous Internet chat rooms.

*Radio cesspool: The MyPillow ads and Kars-for-Kids; someone, please hide the children!

*Dion Lim: a face for TV and a voice for radio. (There's a joke there).

  1. About Sirius/XM --- when you call to cancel they'll usually try to sell a discounted offer of like $25 for 5 or 6 month. They did that when I cancelled. I didn't take the offer as the car I had it for was sold.

  2. Since I'm the guy who said that HH was easy to look at... when she lost the Afghan dog look she really got hotter. Let her personality come out. They're just readers, not reporters.
And I still think Eric Thomas is a hoot. Where did you get the angry thing? Have you watched the weekend reports? Oh, yeah. Maybe he got pissed when they tried to stick him with the vapid blonde

    1. With Heather's recent make-over, as she dropped the bar maid look with the hair and some of the wardrobe, we keep figuring that she's aiming to pack up and move on. Given what Rich reports about the state of KTVU, that would make sense.

    2. Rich, the practice of starting a sentence - any sentence, all sentences - with the "So" is a speech affliction common to Millennials. Sometimes appears to be an attempt to replace the "Uh" in a sentence. It's just as bad. As we know.

    3. I too praised Heather Holmes. If Rich thinks that Jessica Aguirre is more attractive, then he really does have cataracts. Jessica is a 5 on the ethnic scale. Go to East San Jose and youll see one in every store.

    4. @12:47 Have you not noticed how most millennials are starting sentences with "I mean" now?

    5. "Go to East San Jose and youll see [a Jessica Aguirre] in every store."

One of the many nice things about east SJ.

  3. Sure HOPE that KGO will keep Chip on for discussion, commentary after the SOTU this week. And one of his guests should be John Rothmann, too. And maybe Joe Tuman of SF State? There are also good panels to be made from UC Berkeley faculty, as well.

  4. Yep, Cal Men's Hoops is that bad this season, folks.

  5. I heard Peter Finch on KCBS around midnight last night. Is he a regular on KCBS now or just filling in?

    1. Peter is an on-call as needed at both KCBS and Total Traffic (Heart).

  6. The flu viruses now are potent. Much stronger then even ten years ago. Hardest on Baby Boomers they say.
    Yer no P-word.
Reminds,me- my ribs and chest were so sore ( more then now) that the cat felt like a Lion resting on my chest. It's what he likes to do when we watch TV. I put up with it and survived.

  7. You are one angry bitch Rich...chill bro

  8. Nothing pisses people off more than being told they need to 'smile more'. It's really just a pokite way of asking the person, 'Why do you have Resting Bitch/Asshole Face? Lighten up!' Failing a smile, just don't have the default expression of someone who sharted an hour ago, and hasn't had a chance to address the issue.

  9. so ,ryan covay is all they really got now. that's about it over there. that and Giants.

  10. Why would anyone want to buy what's left of KFRC just to make it into KGO? Why not make it into what KFRC was before Harold Camping got his hands on it?

  11. $19/month for Sirius is the quoted price that only suckers pay. $10/month for all access (car, phone, computer) will get full package. Just takes 2 minutes of "discussion" every year at renewal.

  12. Sirius came with my car and I stuck with it but I listen to only about 4 or 5 stations regularly. If there was good local, live news talk, I'd switch to that.

This flu and cold season has been one of the worst in recent memory. I've been hit hard the last 3 months, one bout after another. Not too many have gotten through unscathed.

  13. who in god's name thought ryan scott had any talent? pretend chef, phony callers lame guests who are just as clueless and obnixous as he is

  14. Seems like many are lamenting that RONN didn't get a "sendoff" before being relegated to the "REPORT." I seem to remember prior to the "Next Generation" format change, his show did a full retrospective with a bunch of studio guests lauding his career. Am I wrong? In any event, it's time for him to hang it up.

  15. I'd like to know what time the KTVU "station manager" gets in in the morning. If he leaves at 3pm maybe he arrives at 3am here (6am in New York). LOL. What a surprise that would be for Dave, Gas, Steve and Sal. Sort of a wake up call.

  16. You folks need to stop thinking KGO is a news outlet. It's like if a rock station flips to country and you're wanting to hear Led Zeppelin. It is not happening. They're not a serious station.

  17. Jim Gabbert is rich, tis true, but John Rothmann is twice as rich, Rich.

  18. "running Bearman's taped program on the history of tuna casseroles."

LOL! Good one Rich :) It would be even more funny if it wasn't quite so true.

  19. What is wrong with Heather Holmes? She looks like Nancy O'Dell who is broadcasting the Grammys tonight.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 4:57: To quote Dom DeLuise in "Blazing Saddles"...WRONG!!!

Nancy O'Dell (even at-gulp!-51!)is WAY hotter than HH, even post-makeover. HH does appear to be not only hotter but more competent after the 60K service...
