A Few Thanksgiving Notes

Related image A few Holiday thoughts...

*The 3rd-tier anchors on KCBS sounded like a mini-KGO happy hour this Thanksgiving morning: Jennifer Hodges and oh yes, mister I'll be there no matter what, Jon Bristow anchored the CBS/Entercom morning news. I swear if there was Apocalypse 2017, Bristow would still show up to work, the man never sleeps.

*Mark Ibanez has 38+ years at KTVU; don't be shocked if he calls it quits circa 2019 when he might fade into Hawaiian sunsets and retire from"The Firm." Just a hunch. Ibanez is a good man.

*Last Sunday when the Raiders were playing in Mexico City, KPIX weekend sports guy, Vern Glenn taped a halftime promo using the term "live here at halftime" even though it wasn't halftime nor live. I know, I'm so picky.

*I have a new motto for Da Raiduhs: "Just move, Baby."

*A veteran TV street reporter tells me: "I actually like working Thanksgiving; nobody's in the office to bitch and moan; if and when news breaks, nobody can screw with me, it's just nice and pleasant with very little stress." Of course the reporter is divorced and family is not around but I know what he's saying.

*For me, a quiet, low-profile trip to my sister's house with mom and other sister and brother-in-law; the usual screaming match about politics beckons but it beats last year when I had no Thanksgiving because of unforeseen family health issues. I'm not good at all this.

*One of these days instead of the totally repetitious and useless airport live shots and gas stations (blah, blah, blah, blah, blah) I would love to see some in-depth reporting on just how depressed and sad some people are now, even those that have so-called "tight-knit" family support and structure. I'm no shrink but people are just freaked out and depressed. It's not your garden-variety depression, anyway it would make for a useful, thought-provocative 2 or 3 minutes but I know, it's like asking for the moon, so if you love the dumb live shots from SFO and the gas station in Emeryville, rejoice.

*A reader commented that "it's nice to see you (me) have refrained from 'asking for donations' of late'"...oh sure, I'll just go broke while you lounge around in your skivvies reading about some KRON misfit.

*A reminder: It costs 2 bucks a month (ok, $25 actually) to support this site and ensure its sustainability ...so, yes, PLEASE, DONATE, it's patriotic and allows Rich to breathe and eat merrily.

*The unofficial Thanksgiving hangout for media 415ers: Tommy's Joynt. When KRON was still across the street you couldn't get a seat after noon and late night. Those were the good old days when Hank Tanenbaum sold garden furniture.

OK, see ya, eat, fress, nosh, till your blue in the face.

  1. I'm thankful for Gary & Larry and KNBR. I'm somewhat thankful for the new evening guys, they're starting to grow on me, check back next year. I used to be thankful for Ronn and KGO but I left when the format started changing and it was 5 minutes per topic or whatever, he's still a good man tho. I'm also thankful for KRON's newscasts, Heather Holmes, and Gasia Mikawhatthehell at KTVU.

  2. Rich: Please don't tell me you have relatives who actually believe the most disgusting pastor to ever come from Alabama, let alone Mr. Savage's DD, aka The Hairpiece.
BTW, Netanyahu's closest military officials are also now upset with Savage's buddy due to being backstabbed post-negotiations.

    1. That would mean he also has relatives that believed the smoking man aka the last con-in-chief who was in office. So much is going to come out in 2018 on what his administration did that was covered up your head will be spinning.

  3. The only internet news stream I could get this noon was KRON and a black supremist propaganda thing that KTVU was doing (I guess) about the Black Panthers or the '70s or something. Who knows? I didn't watch it ... more schmaltz.

  4. I've enjoyed Ibanez's work and personality over the years. When the time comes, I wish him all the best in his post-television life.

  5. Tennenbaum recently showed up on a new Russell's Furniture ad. Apparently, Russell is having a "retirement sale"

    1. Henry has been doing the weekly Russell's ads on KRON for years. It's a pretty fun watch, akin to when tv stations were truly local.

Mr. Russell is in fact retiring. He's about 80 years old now and his grandson Josh (who has been in the commercials the last 5 years or so as well) is taking over.

    2. Not with that doofus, "Nephew". There is no retirement in sight for Russells

  6. KRON's Moore and Radnich..worked T day. Huh,Nexstar plays hardball. They used to get the day off.
Yes,they all acted lovey dovey. What do you expect they have to do with Donald Radnich always there? Lie and act.

  7. At 11:59 I can't let the day slip away without mentioning Kristen Sze and her million dollar look today. Because I have been through Sensitivity training I won't use the word "seductive."

She is a diamond in the rough, who has started to shine. She has crossed over...I like the new Kristen. She has the "it factor" and the "wow factor," a lethal combination sought out by many women!

Hope to see more of her!!

  8. Back in the 80s when I worked for NBC in Burbank we had a catered Thanksgiving dinner-turkey and everything. Christmas too.
Then GE took over and it all went away.

  9. Cumulus was just delisted on NASDAQ. It now trades as a penny stock and today closed at 16 cents a share.

  10. Per the reporter who likes working on Thanksgiving -- I like working the holidays, nights and weekends as well for a number of reasons. You're away from the dickhead bosses -- and there are a ton of them in news. Also, it's usually slower, and if there is a big news story, you can usually focus on that. There's fewer people to deal with and, depending who you work for, you usually get some sort of holiday pay.
