KTVU Weather Guy, Steve Paulson, Gets Snippy With Woman on Facebook Who Asked About Fire Coverage; Update: KTVU's Lame Responce

A woman on Facebook let KTVU weatherman, Steve Paulson, know that there were fires ravaging her community near Mendocino and Lake County...Paulson, normally a little more tactful, offered back a less-than-spectacular response.

I'm betting Paulson will take this back. Just a hunch.

  1. I have to see what the woman wrote before I voice an opinion. What was her tone? Maybe she called him a bad name or a swear word...Those viewers can act like morons a times..He probably used restraint.

    1. I see nothing wrong with Steve's response.

If it was a Dem woman it was probably filled with snark or sarcasm. It's what they do, who they are.

    2. 9:22 AM: None of the above. She asked very nicely why KTVU wasn't providing any coverage of the Mendocino County fires.

Steve's in the wrong here. This is another "Sum Ting Wong" "We To Lo" "Ho Lee Fuk" "Bang Ding Ow" PR f-up for KTVU.

You tell 'em, 9:47. There has never been any snark or sarcasm from the likes of Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malken, Sarah Palin, and Dana Loesch. Or the hordes of "Deplorables."

    4. Her exact words since I can't post the screenshot:
"Why don't the main tv stations cover much of what is happening in Lake and Mendocino Counties...100s of homes have been destroyed and people have died too!"

  2. Retracted but without comment or apology. Moronic, because a quick check of the Nielsen DMA map (http://www.thevab.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/2015-2016-TV-DMA-map.pdf) shows ALL of Mendocino County is in the San Francisco DMA.

In another post, Steve tried to tell people Mendocino County was "Eureka TV's responsibility".

  3. When all reporters work over-time, tired and moody. Must give big credits to Jessica Castro on KGO showing her professionalism including Dan and Kristen working hours for the great coverage. Yesterday, only KRON 4 expanded their coverage with reporters I rarely seen on TV and so lame, one reporter has to move the camera themselves while interview someone.

    1. Not lame. That's the video journalist (vj) style of late. While itveouldve bern better for the reporter to move to accommodate a 2-shot, most aren't trained for videography or have a dedicated camera crew to makevit happen.

  4. He addressed everyone in his post, not just one person so it doesn't matter what the initial tone of others was. He's a public figure in a public forum and there will always be rude people and trolls, gotta have thick skin. The line about ratings was unforgivable. The rest wasn't a problem.

    1. The line about ratings was honest. Coming up with some bs answer would be unforgivable.

  5. Steve's response is fine. I'm surprised Rich is picking on one of his favorites. Is he taking Roberta's spot since she retired?

  6. In that vein..KRON cancelled its sports segment for the week so far. I check in every now and then..no sports. I recorded yesterdays 8pm news, and FF..no sports at all.
I guess a giggling chuckling sports guy who is sure to say the wrong thing they figured, isn't worth the risk. SO,do more news.

  8. At least Steve was honest.

  9. The key phrase in his posting is "I don't decide what we cover." Was his response a little cold? Yes. Off base, not so much.

    1. Agreed. Much ado about nothing.

  10. Paulson's comment was more honest than I would have been, and he probably wishes he would have held back a little. But he isn't wrong about anything he posted, and it is indeed Eureka TV that should be doing the lion's share of reporting on that fire. KTVU (and others) have mentioned the Mendocino fires, but they've got bigger, closer-to-home fish to fry.

    1. I wonder if Eureka tv has their own Henry Tenenbaum or Michael Finney.

    2. The Ukiah and Redwood Valley area does not get their news from Eureka. They get is from the Bay Area.

    3. Which is because---Ukiah and all of Mendocino County---ARE IN THE SF NIELSEN DMA!

  11. Nothing wrong with the post. Everyone can find something to b!tch about. Get a grip.

  12. Steve's response was fine.
I would have liked it if one of the channels choppers would have flew over
the Sulfur fire next to Clearlake and shared the video with
all the local channels to show.

  13. There was nothing snippy about Paulson's response. The woman who asked the question does have a point, though.

  14. Seems like Paulsen thinks Eureka is in Mendocino County.

  15. Nothing wrong with that post. Perhaps he could have left the ratings book comment out but it was a calm, perhaps cool but REAL answer. This is why I LIKE Paulson in the morning. He puts a stop to all the BS and is usually like, "... look calm down. This is what's going on and why." We ask our personalities to keep it real and then get are drahws in a bunch when they do.

OAN. How is Radnich's mom ? Isn't she in a community up there? Hope OK.

  16. The Ukiah Valley gets their news from the Bay Area NOT Eureka. As a news industry professional, maybe Paulson should have done some research! Plus his his remark is calus and indicates ratings are more important than people!

  17. I give up on KTVU. They have turned so far right...with that FOX-Trump chip on shoulder attitude..no wonder their ratings are sinking.
The failing fox station, with its fake facebook posts..

  18. Gotta love all the ANONYMOUS cowards blasting the residents of Mendocino County. Guess you can sit back in your safe little communities and not worry about having to evacuate in the middle of the night with the fire at your door. All you ANONYMOUS keyboard warriors should be ashamed of yourselves and your behavior here. Paulson was out of line and dismissive. AND as it was discovered, Mendocino and Lake Counties ARE in KTVU's Nielson Rating Map/Book/Area.

    1. The fact that Mendocino County is not in your “Ratings Book” does not mean that the people of Mendocino County do not need important information that could improve their safety. They may not be in your “Ratings Book” but they have friends and families all over the Bay Area that are extremely worried and are equally upset that there is basically zero coverage of this devastating fire. I wasn’t aware that confirmed 8 fatalities and more believed to have passed isn’t news worthy. I wasn’t aware that homes and businesses being completely burned to the ground as if they never existed isn’t news worthy. The point is that Mendocino County maybe a smaller community and further away, the devastation is real. Their lives matter, their families, friends, businesses and community are just as important and news worthy as the lives 60.5 miles south.

  19. Funny that KTVU had crews here for less important issues- BAD excuse! You'd think they beieve anyplace N of the GG is a foreign country. The should focus on ALL areas where KTVU is seen.

  20. I've seen you mention the chatter between the hosts on TV, from weatherman to Host A and then to Host B. It doesn't work. Spend the time on giving us more news.

  21. B.S. Mendocino is not that far away. When I was editor of The Del Norte Triplicate, I personally covered a fire that was the largest in Oregon's history (at that time) and it was much farther away than Mendocino to the Bay Area. It's called priorities. They have shortchanged coverage on the Redwood Fire. The assignment editors at the stations should be talked to. Or, if it came from above, then their superiors. No excuses. It's been HORRIBLE coverage on all Bay Area channels for the Redwood Fire and the fire farther north, I think in Yuba County, for which coverage has almost been non-existent. On a more positive note, The Sacramento Bee has covered the Yuba Fire quite well. The Press Democrat, The San Francisco Chronicle and The Mercury News have done a good job with Wine Country fires but a horrible job on Redwood and Yuba fires. No excuse.

  22. I am a Steve Paulson fan, but I cringed at his comment. It was rude, and now I haven't seen him post in FB since Oct 11. Anyone know if he is still around?

  23. I see nothing wrong with the comment from Steve. This was a horrible period of time with many reporters stretched to the max and terrible suffering for the inhabitants of the area. I would venture to guess that the superiors at the station do make the decision on what is covered. I would have liked more coverage on the Yuba fires as well but no one was covering them. Steve was honest in his answer and oh well if people can't accept that. We can't please everyone all the time. I hope Steve returns to his Facebook page soon. He is by far the best weather person in the Bay Area and has been for some time.
