Sergio Quintana |
A prominent broadcast source close to the situation told me "major favoritism" played a "huge" part in Quintana's leaving , a respected correspondent at KGO and well liked by his peers.
The source told me a number of reporters and anchors replied to ND, Tracey Watkowski's memo expressing sadness and frustration because "Sergio wanted and deserved to stay at ABC7. "
But Quintana was passed over for a full-time gig two weeks ago when LA blond newbie, Kate Larsen was hired. As you know, I don't really care for Larsen.
Quintana was one of several qualified freelancers who have worked for years at KGO who had applied for the job only to find out that someone who has never worked in this market was chosen.
And management seems intent on trying to fast track Larsen to stardom, trying her out in the anchor chair. That's been a disaster.
Why the favoritism for someone who seems like nothing special--an ordinary news reader at best?
I learned through several sources Larsen's dad is good friends with KGO GM, Bill Burton. Geez, what a coincidence--seems the good old boys' network apparently is still alive and well.
A KGO source told me:
"Fortunately for Sergio, he is talented enough to be picked up by KNTV. Our loss is certainly their gain. But this incident does nothing for morale."

Morale will always suck as long as Trixie rides her broom
ReplyDeleteCouldn't have said it better myself. She's a witch with a capital B.

ReplyDeleteQuintana is a solid newsperson. He'll improve NBC11's coverage and can also provide perspectives on the Bay Area's LGBT community to a new audience. ABC7 dropped the ball huge. Way to go Trixie! Dig that nose deeper into the hole, honey.
ReplyDeleteJessica Aguirre will love pronouncing Sergio's name.
DeleteI remember when journalism cred was what it took to get ahead in the biz. It's a bad sign when managers feel they have to do stuff like this to stay on the good side of bosses - and probably a worse sign that someone would have no problem taking advantage of it.
ReplyDeleteNewsrooms are so high school these days. I'm surprised they have time to go out and report on stories.
Kate Larsen was awful co-anchoring with Eric Thomas. She is a horrible field reporter, too. She is vacuous. I actually turned to NBC Bay Area. Katie Marzullo is such overlooked and underrated talent. Katie deserves to be in the anchor's chair along side Eric Thomas.
ReplyDeleteBefore I got to your 8th paragraph, my thoughts immediately went to that scumbag Bill Burton. It just felt like his dirty finger prints were all over this.
ReplyDeleteKate Larsen....patooie.Bimbo blonde. Chirpy knucklehead. Keep hoping Eric Thomas gives her an elbow
ReplyDeleteLarsen...Wonder if she’s the little pretentious thing that drives a brown Lexus SUV. Get over yourself hun bun.
ReplyDeleteSergio Quintana was finally someone with the gravitas of a Rigo Chacon which has been missing in the Bay Area for many years. That will be NBC Bay Area's gain.
ReplyDeleteKate looks like a good lay. Sergio got screwed!
ReplyDeleteWhat a disaster K.Larsen was this weekend on the air - no personality, bland delivery, talked over Eric, mispronounced words and just generally seemed uncomfortable delivering the news. Eric Thomas is excellent by himself with Shu + Drew.
ReplyDeleteScrew KGO. I'm done with local tv news. None of it is worth spit. Sergio is a fantastic reporter.
