The Shitty Mood at KGO 810 Where The Ratings Dive And 'Major Discontent' Abounds

It's no great surprise that at the crappy, albatross AM 810 outpost called KGO Radio, the general mood is of "major discontent" --that mood shared by virtually all the torsos that inhabit the small office and studio and why?

*The July Ratings are out and are terrible--in 12-plus, KGO went from a 1.9 to a rather pitiful 1.5 and although advertisers don't buy time off this, it's bad enough when the station internals are worse and ad buyers are aware of this.

*The 'Armstrong and Getty' numbers are terrible and KGO's flailing star, the president of the Pleasanton middle-aged wives club, Ronn Owens has ratings so awful, they're not even running his program on the embarrassing overnight menu (from 3-5 AM)

*Ratings are so putrid Cumulus is insisting that to buy time on KNBR, you (advertiser) you must buy a spot on KGO. Like, say, 2-for-the-price-of-one policy. That's sort of telling.

*All of this terrible news comes as KGO's latest format change, (April 1, 2016) took effect and the response from the community is a firm thumbs down. Furthermore, it's on PD, Mike Anthony's watch, which only reinforces the rumors that Anthony is a goner, if not by the end of summer most certainly by the end of the year. Cumulus needs a scapegoat and Anthony is soon to become their latest casualty until they find another mercenary in waiting.

No wonder the candy machine was empty last week.

  1. The vending machine was empty because it was being converted from dollars to pesos....

    Just in case.

  2. Would it be foolish to assume ESPN/Disney approached KGO first??
You would think there would be some interest, offer or discussion about moving deportes to 810.

Wouldn't 810 deportes be your very first choice?

Part of the story is missing.

    1. I'd choose that before Ethan Bearman and his yappy chihuahua producer. Good god, the reason they're called producers is because they're not hosts. The reason KGO's ratings are in the toilet is because nobody there seems to know what they're doing.

  3. ...or even a discussion about placing ESPN (english) on 810.

There had to have been an offer.

    1. There was probably no offer. Sanctuary City radio is what it is.

  4. Their big format change was no change at all, same old tired voices and opinions with a few exceptions. Their weekend lineup is unlistenable for the most part. Blow it up Jan. 1 and start all over with younger hosts targeting a younger audience. Otherwise simulcast KNBR til January...what a disaster.

    1. That us what they are trying to do with Drex and Ethan Bearman, that is not working out too well, these guys are for the most part very superficial, except I think Ethan is bright enough, but he changes subjects all the time, anyway I don't find them very interesting. I think the should do a mixture of talk and news like the use to. I listen to Armstrong and Getty and they can do good interviews and be funny, but 4 hours is too much. Anyway the hours they are on I listen off and on, between not being fully awake, making breakfast, taking a shower etc, I only listen with half a ear. I don't know if there are any new and upcoming hosts who can pull ratings? Perhaps not I don't see much evidence of that on KGO or any other station for that matter. Of all the hosts on the defunct 910 I only tuned in to Alan Colmas on a regular basis. When KGO put on Angie Curio I though she was really good, but the fired her after a short time. I like Tom Sullivan on 1530 am, and on the new 860 I at times find Michael Medved interesting, the other hosts not so much. I like Pat Thurston, although she has too many guests on, and is a little to the left for my taste. I like Brian for the most part, he does local stories, has good guests. I listen to Ronn for the most part, although he is not as good as he use to be, he is better than the alternative Rush Limbaugh (too predictable) and now Dennis Prager on 860 who is boring, and sounds very low energy.

    2. What's this obsession with "the younger audience"? They're sending selfies on snapchat. Do you think the younger audience cares what Ethan Barely-a-man (KSCO flunky) says about any subject? They're more interested in twerking and what Taylor Swift tweeted.

  6. KGO, I remember that station. Whatever happened to the lawyer guy? Is Bernie back?

  7. yeah , America lacks true diversity. notice Kuiper didn't say it's a grand slam'' when belt hit one? he said it's all tied up ,so you assumed ''grand slam'', but don't think he actually said that. he went to the ''break'' after that. they seem to assume youre listening to every single thing , not realizing that a lot of listeners are on the run with some kind of earbuds, so they need to account for the mobile age. distracted by numerous screens and digital info, broadcasters aren't completely descriptive much.stop looking at screens and broadcast the game. put the ''smart tech'' stuf down.

  10. Rich -I'm curious. I have noticed that some Cumulus music stations have slightly improved elsewhere in the country. How are the other Bay Area Cumulus FM stations doing? Is there ratings or revenue improvement?

  11. Are A&G's rating on 810 higher than they were on 910?

  12. I'd be happy if Bearman would slow the fluck down and finish one sentence before staring the next. It's gobbledygook radio as it is.

  14. KGO gets positive reports from listeners when John Rothman is on. Bring back Bernie, have Rothman full time, keep Pat, get Tillem again, and dump A&G, Bearman, Franklin, and Drex and voila! you have people giving it a thumbs up again.

  15. Off-topic, but hoping Rich may indulge me with a request or two (I imagine I'm not the only one who wonders about these things). Also, plenty of industry insiders visit here, so perhaps they can answer in the comments...
    1. Sarah and Vinnie - For some reason I was hooked on them a bit during my morning commute. However, it ended. Their little sex banter is just stupid, maybe because it's programming geared towards a female demo? But they're pushing 50 and act like they're 20. Anyway, I read that Sarah was pulling in like $1.2m per year for that show. Is that true? Do her and Vinnie make the same?

    2. Why the hell did they pair Tolbert up with that dope John Lund (sp?). The reason so many people like Tolbert and have years is because he's genuine, nothing seems/feels forced. He can be a bore sometimes when he isn't partnered up, but still, you feel like you know the guy. All of a sudden they put Lund in there and they go back and forth like they are buddies from Arizona (Tolbert's school). However, Lund takes the conversation down a path of a current Arizona Wildcat, just sophomoric stupid humor and Tolbert goes right along with it. For the first time, I feel like Tolbert isn't what we always thought he was. He can't possibly be happy about this. Couldn't he have lobbied for someone else, or rotating guests hosts like he used to have? I can't listen anymore.

Anyway, long rant/post, would be interested in what Rich or others have to say.

  16. Tried Armstrong and Getty for a few days but got sick of the shouting and wheezy laughter. And of course there's the usual tea party crap about Govt. regulation. Owens has gone nuts, and what's with the doper Gary Johnson love?? No more 910 as an alternative so AM radio is now dead in the BA. Only saving grace is KCBS. So, FM radio is it now! Sad!

    1. A&G are terrible. One reads the news and makes sarcastic, right-wing, comments and the other grunts and says "wow" 100 times per day.

Ronn turned into a right-winger years ago when he stopped reading books and started watching Fox and reading Drudge. He's lost a lot of brain cells over the years.

    1. Couldn't agree more. I thank Bearman has potential, he seem bright enough, although conservative, so I don't agree with him on much. Never the less I don't listen to a host based on his political affiliation I listen to the host based on his/her ability to hold my attention, so it is possible Bearman could get me to listen to him more, if he was more interesting< However, he jumps from subject to subject, and the giggling producer has got to go. John Rothmann was sitting in tonight for Drex and will be in both Saturday and Sunday for Pat, heaven can't wait.

    2. Bareman is a hack. Why are you giving such subpar hosts any attention? After masters such as Burns and Taliafero guys like Bareman and Dreck are the lowest of the low. In the golden days of radio these two hacks would be Weintraub's boot lickers

  21. Gosh...I didn't realize just how far 810 has fallen because "Im not listening to kgo anymore".. to the guy or gal who says " bring bernie back" you do know that he traded in child porn (children being filmed as they were being raped) right??? He stated his desire to have intercourse with his own minor children too. Yea ,I can see the sanctuary city thing has gone to your head...ether that or your vodka enemas are comming back to haunt you-get some help!!

  22. You look at the 12+ numbers and it's pretty interesting. KGO drops .5 (A quarter of its audience!) and KCBS goes up .1 and KQED jumps .4 seems to me it's pretty clear where the audience went. During this election year people want serious news and information, so what did Cumulus do? It blew up the news department and replaced morning drive with two Tea Party, middle aged frat boys, just what the Bay Area audience was looking for. When you look at KSFO their numbers are steady, they have the conservative audience looked up there is no more on the bone for KGO to try to bring in with A&G.

  23. Breathing that feces and urine infused air of San FranSico does have strange effects on the KGO's talk show hosts and staff! Ronn's desperate effort to hang on to that miserable microphone is the sign that without it he has nothing except those electrodes in his tired brain!

  28. Ethan Bearman is ok, but I don't like the banter with the Valley Girl side-kick. She's too giggly. In fact I don't like the in studio banter. I wish the host would stick with 1 topic an hour at least. And when breaking news happens link into the nat'l news. When the truck terrorism incident in Nice, France happened, Chip Franklin was yabbing on about legalization of recreational marijuana use in California; it was bizarre.

  29. In the case of Copeland...The BAR has been lowered enough to allow him to have a show. Ronn has been waiting for a BUS for the last 5+ years, he is no longer relevant. Franklin talking about Pot makes sense...Ask anyone who went to the last Cumulus Holiday party. Drex is just LOST. This is not your FATHERS or MOTHERS KGO. Most of these people would not have been even considered by Swanson or Luckoff in the Golden KGO Era. The only thing that is the same is the Call Letters. But I am sure the PRICE is Right...Cause that is all Cumulus cares about...Just listen to any of their stations...KNBR KFOG The Ticket and KSAN. Low Bid all the way. In fact that is the story for the whole company especially in San Francisco.

  30. Once I had a dream that all the radio and TV channels were suddenly all in Spanish. Perhaps it's coming true.
I really miss Gil Gross on 910 where is show was much better than when he was on KGO. Now I will listen to a bit of A&G and sometimes am entertained. I like Santa Cruz early morning show on 1080 which is fun and quirky. I used to start my day with Ronn at 9:00, but the new hours throw me off and although still a fan, I don't like some of his topics and that he is voting 3rd party. Ethan Bearman was great on 1080, but I just don't enjoy him on KGO. He doesn't keep my interest at all. Copie is okay, but again don't like many of his topics although I like him as a person and when he has comedians on with the news. Chip is just so so, but someone irritating and not mentally stimulating. I do like Michael Finney a lot and occasionally I am surprised to find Jon Rothman who I like if he is not overly serious and depressing. Jon Bachelor has interesting topics, but is pretty far to the right. KGO has really gone downhill.
Every time I hear the term "The Next Generation", I cringe. Hey where is Christine Craft these days? She always spices things up. I need a new go- to radio station.

  31. I started listening to KGO in 1970. I stopped listening in the late 1990's. KGO, who brought us Dr Dean Edell, Dr bill Wattenburg, Owen Span, Jim Eason. Then in the 1990's they brought us the "Bush Bashers" like Korell. The station wanted to push a political agenda that was exstremely liberal. Just a mouthpiece of the Democratic Party. KGO lost focus of its audience.
