KTVU Reporter Rob Roth and Photographer Robbed in East Oakland

KTVU senior reporter, Rob Roth and his photographer were struck by thieves in East Oakland late Tuesday, 415 Media has learned, exclusively, through a station source.

The robbers took a very pricey camera and other equipment while under an armed security guard.

There were no injuries.

  1. This is just horrible. If it can happen to a reporter of Roth's seniority and stature, it can happen to anyone.

    1. What does seniority and stature have to do with being a victim? If anything it makes him a greater target.

    2. Um, yeah, it can. I don't think muggers go, "Hey, can't touch that dude, he's a senior correspondent and a Peabody winner."

    3. What does seniority and stature have to do with getting held up?

    4. If Mr Roth & co-worker were of certain rabbinical heritage, the JDL & half of SF would be up in arms & it would be on every station. Otherwise, you won't hear about it.

    5. The crux of the initial message is "it can happen to anyone" (irrespective of one's position in the business). From a reporter as tenured and statured as Roth, to a newbie who doesn't possess his level of experience and recognition in the field. Experience that often brings a heightened cognizance/consideration of risks, and other important factors in a particular setting.

  3. While under an armed security guard??? What was the security guard doing, having a latte at Starbucks?

  4. The guard is only there to observe and report...not to intervene. The guard the intervenes is an extra $9 per day.

    1. A great example of political correctness!!! What's new, we are a Nation of crimes. America is 5% of the total World population. If you add up all the prisoners locked up in jail/prison on the Planet, America has 25% of them locked up.

When they are finally released, given a second chance, 60% end up going back to jail within 3 years. So more than half of the prisoners Obama decided to give an early release from prison today, will end up right back where they started!

So put a tracking device on/in their equipment and then the police can go retrieve the stolen items. No need to arrest the person who stole it, won't do any good, they probably have rap sheet longer than your arm anyway, what is one more arrest going to accomplish!

  7. The security guard at the Rockridge market hall watching the cheese and baguettes is more vigilant than the one watching Roth apparently.

  10. Why would the guard be "armed" if his objective was to "observe and report"??
Of coures in obummers America.....law enforcement of today are real hesitant to get envolved. Some people feel that they have the right to burn, destroy, rape, assault, car jack and pimp thier way through life because to tell them "no" is to appropriate thier culture.....

  11. Why does this happen only in the BA???

Because they know they can get away with it.
Any other police dept in the nation would just hunt them down and arrest them.

    1. In Chicago they would shoot them in the back. Maybe you should move there...

  12. I'm sure Rob is far too smart to risk his life for somebody else's stuff. Die for something that's obsolete in 5 years? NO way.
But,if no gun was shown? Passing over throwing punches would be hard to resist. I hate punks with a passion,I hate their attitudes, their clothing, the vandalizing and the graffiti.
I'm almost right wing. Living in Urbania does that to you.

  13. They need to put a GPS tracking device in these TV cameras so they can track the perps down and bust them. OR have a sting operation, placing a couple armed cops in the back of the TV van and in unmarked cars close by and bust these thugs on the spot. The robberies will stop soon enough I believe.

  14. Good post. You informed people about an incident and didn't whine, piss, and moan about how much KTVU annoys you. Keep it up.
