Incredible. Just shows how these Donnie and Marie generational "kids" who 15 years ago were eating up their Pokemon games as 10 year olds haven't grown up at all and to "serve" their audience in their capacity as "professionals' offer us this nonsense. Our latest example of having driven over the cliff into the abyss as a society.
Actually most of the really good people in the business will tell you you should hire from History, English, Econ and other disciplines. As Linda Ellerbee once said, "You can learn to hold a stick mike later."
Fred Zehnder hired Vacar, a former Nader's Raider and auto company spokesman, to be his consumer editor. Fowler is a licensed pilot and has a scientific background. Leslie Griffith was an educator before she went into news. I think Shandobil was involved in politics somehow. See a pattern here? Fred didn't worry about your haircut or your voice. He worried about your competence. And he put together the best news team in the business. Today's owners and news directors should learn something from the most successful person in local TV ever, but no, they don't.
And they took Katie Marzullo off that desk for these two? Even Kristen and Co. on a very., vary bad day were superior to the Donnie & Marie show on their best day ever. Oh wait - they are shipping Reggie off to Cleveland to cover the Republican convention. That should be interesting to watch - for maybe 30 seconds.
Katie Marzullo is the most underutilized anchor/reporter on KGO. Smart, attractive and highly skilled, KGO management would be wise to use her as the primary female back-up anchor for Ama Daetz.
I just hope Reggie doesn't embarrass San Francisco...I always worry that Reggie and others of his ilk when sent to do field work will do or say something stupid.
But do millennials even watch KGO morning news or follow the KGO app or Zouves? I think they're going after a demographic that has no interest in what they're selling.
News Departments that I know about try hire a cross-section of knowledge base to draw from in special situations...yes, even a few Pokemon specialists like Natasha. She has her place, but it's taking up a lot of space. Has she had that one-on-one interview with Jenny Craig yet?
I find it hard to get worked up over this, or any other stuff these people put on their social media accounts.
It's not like KGO is using this as their on-air lede (yet).
And at least it's not like Mother Sommerville's bleeding heart Facebook posts, which SF Gate tries to pass off as content.
Plus, it may actually be of interest to those who have joined the 21st century and stopped using flip phones. Like it or not, the Pokemon app has become a popular phenomenon.
These are just local news readers, not Murrow, Cronkite, or Woodward and Bernstein.
Please put Eric and Kristen back on the morning new team! Cannot even stand watching anchor below age 30 sitting on the morning news desk. I even stop watching KGO 7 except the 9:00 news shock to see the station putting ads ads ads of the two during commercial break.
According to TV Spy, local stations are using a measurement tool called Share Rocket to see how well TV news talent rank based on what they share on social. Maybe one reason for Zouves and Somervile all over social media.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Natasha! So very helpful! Hang on...wait a minute...pull my finger.
ReplyDeleteCrazy thought....maybe if they hired from journalism schools instead of broadcast schools.
ReplyDeleteJ-schools are full of heffers and frumps. The true solution is models that can read.
DeleteJournalism majors are usually uglier than broadcast majors. That's why you don't see them on air. And that's facts!

Fred Who?
DeleteAh, multiculturalism.
ReplyDeleteKnowledge of Pokemon avatars goes up, credibility of Zouves and news division at KGO does a Kamikaze dive into the Bay.

DeleteThey've pissed Katie Marzullo off enough to where I'm surprised she's still there...must be just biding time until the network offers roll in...
DeleteIs Gary Radnich into this as well? How many Pokemon has he captured.
ReplyDeleteI remember Cronkite used to tweet in the early days about the Cats Cradle phenom sweeping the country.
ReplyDelete"Like"
DeleteWhat, you don't think Cronkite would have listed his Pokemon favorites? Murrow? Jennings? ;-)
ReplyDeleteOhhhhh...
ReplyDeleteNatasha is Totes Adorbs! Maybe Reggie will offer to carry her Hello Kitty purse.
Now lets put on some K-Pop and dance!!!
Carry? Shit, Reggie probably WANTS her purse.
DeleteI just hope Reggie doesn't embarrass San Francisco...I always worry that Reggie and others of his ilk when sent to do field work will do or say something stupid.
ReplyDeleteRich,
ReplyDeleteOff subject:
Can you do a blog on Jessica Castro ABC 7. I see her reporting on the noon news and she looks and sounds like she would make a great full time anchor.
Your opinion...
Had the same thought this morning.
DeleteListen to all these Baby Boomers complaining here.
ReplyDeleteiff laurel and hardy were muslims, Stanley would say, ''I didn't mean to do it Ali !''.
ReplyDeleteAqui and Zouves are only pandering to millenails whose collective IQ scores are below a toilet seat. Way to go Trixie.
ReplyDeleteBut do millennials even watch KGO morning news or follow the KGO app or Zouves? I think they're going after a demographic that has no interest in what they're selling.
DeleteAnd I thought Pokemon died years ago. Domesday is near.
ReplyDeleteLocal Emmy award winning work from San Diego's sexiest anchor
ReplyDeleteAs long as she reads the news professionally I don't care what she tweets, what she has for dinner or who she dates.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter.
don't need her to read the news for me, i can do that myself with my smart phone anywhere any time.
DeleteAs the Pokeman Spins......Next on Action News!

ReplyDeleteThese two are idiots...no more channel 7 in the mornings for me. Keep tasting my oatmeal for the second time after watching these children.
