415 Media Breaking: KRON MMJ Jackie Sissel Assaulted in Berkeley

Jackie Sissel, a KRON MMJ (multi media journalist) was a victim of a snatch and grab theft this (Tuesday) morning on the Hwy. 80 exit at Ashby Ave. in Berkeley, 415 Media is learning.

From multiple sources, Sissel resisted the attack trying to get the camera away from the suspect. This is the second time he has had an incident.

Bottom line: When will KRON learn?

MMJ's and no security guard? A police report was filed. From my understanding Sissel was not seriously injured.

  1. I just wish those journalists would carry pepper spray. I myself would have a telescoping baton. Teach the thugs a lesson.

    1. Quite the risk, trying to spray someone packing heat.

  2. So what does one do with such a camera? Put it on craigslist?

  6. Man. Why doesn't KRON have an armed Security Officer with these people?! And why would he resist the attacker?!! Give them the keys to the van.

      They're cheap and don't give a shit.

Their VJs should start suing. But it would end their careers even if they 'won," not just here but everywhere. It's a bitching business.

    2. They will only have armed security after something bad happens.

  7. I haven't seen a mention of it on KRON yet. They have repeated about every other story including the dreadlocks bandit about ten times..nothing on the KRON mugging.
    Why is that?

  8. I'm a photog at one of the "Big Four" affiliates. NOBODY knows this at my station...but I have a valid concealed-carry permit. NO REPORTER knows this; but I always bring a (concealed in my live truck) Beretta 9mm--which I can easily get to if needed. I don't dare tell anyone at my station for fear of being reprimanded/suspended...or even fired.

    1. Indeed, it is a sad stare of affairs when one could face disciplinary action and or termination for simply exercising our constitutional 2nd amendment right. Perhaps when those in the media start doing stories on how guns save lives, and they do...every day the climate may change. Most if not all articles out today about gun violance involves those who are in possession of guns illegally to begin with and are using them durring the commission of a crime. As a leagle gun owner I find the anti gun agenda appalling.

    2. Companies are terrified that they will get sued for something they couldn't control. As much as I agree with what he is doing the station will probably term him for carrying it. Should they find out

    3. While it's great exercise one's 2nd amendment. My question is always, have you ever shot someone - do you know what that feels like? Will you be fast enough and calm enough to pull that fire arm, especially if you are fired upon? Not trying to be an ass or a troll. Just some real questions. FYI, my answers to both of those questions are yes.

    4. So when your truck gets robbed including your gun we have another weapon in the hands of a criminal. Thanks for announcing this on the Internet. You just made every truck a target. You are the textbook case for banning handguns. Too stupid & too irresponsible to have one.

      I am the original poster.
It is locked & hidden in a place that only I know where it is. Most reporters don't ever venture into spaces in news vans other than the writing area/tape viewing area.

Obviously, I wouldn't be able to use it in EVERY occassion. But those rare instances when I have to pull a nightside shift, I make sure that there is a clear path to its LOCKED location. Again--most reporters wouldn't know where to look for it (I'm sure any photogs reading this are nodding their head...thinking of all the hidden spaces/nooks where you can hide a LOCKED handgun (I have a custom-made lockbox; had to provide exact dimensions in order to fit it).

    6. OP, I think I worked with you, and I say, right on man!

    7. Given that most of these robberies take less than a minute or less to pull off, good luck unlocking that locked location and using that gun to actually protect yourself. I'm afraid all you'll do is get yourself and your reporter killed. But don't worry-- you'll be remembered as a hero and your funeral will be carried live by all the local stations.

    8. 11;23, you're just pissed because the sales and concealment of guns is proliferating, out of necessity, and there's not a damned thing you can do about it.

  10. The way local major market covers news today is a joke. They have cut back so much that many TV stations now expect a large percentage of their reporters to shoot and edit heir own video, in addition to covering the story.

I worked in small market TV before getting a 'break' in a major market back in the 1970s, and this is what we did in small market TV. We shot our own video or film and edited ourselves, because we only had a staff of seven.

KRON and the rest of the local TV companies are owned by conglomerates who are screaming about sinking profits, and that's all ownership or management cares about in broadcasting anymore. This is why I find the whole argument about 'liberal' media laughable.

Most stations are owned by big companies who are beholden to shareholders. They listen to mostly doltish 'consultants;' people who weren't good enough to make in on the air or behind the scenes themselves, so now they're suddenly experts?

Profit and 'entertainment' are what most those companies crave above all, not public service and covering stories which are important to the local communities. Public service…what's that, some arcane concept?

Heck, even CBS TV last night had Oprah Winfrey's best friend doubling as some sort of a commentator on the floor at the Democratic Convention last night! Laughable!

The media has become a joke because the people who run it are cold-blooded, bottom lined ass-wipes, who know little about how to run media operations. Why do you think the quality of our local and national news is so bad compared to 20 years ago? Why do you think that there are much more people backing Donald Trump, than there ever would have been even ten years ago?

The media, in its effort to make a quick buck has subverted its duties for the love of the almighty dollar. And along the way they've ';dumbed down America.'

  11. As expensive as those cameras are, didn't I read they cost around $40,000, they should come from the manufacture with a built in tracking device.

    So, to summarize:

You carry a weapon in your vehicle, likely against company policy. You generally work dayside, with the occasional nightside shift. You drive a live truck. While that doesn't necessarily winnow down the field of potential candidates for any ND's reading this blog, it points them in a direction. Now they just have to start searching each live truck for a box which is locked, looks out place, could be easily accessible, and then match an employee to the truck and shift. Good job. You just compromised whatever it was you were trying to accomplish by making sure every ND in the Bay Area looking to avoid a liability starts looking for the photog with a gun in their truck.

More importantly, word now gets out on the street there's a TV live truck out there with a gun in it. Cool. You haven't potentially put your life or someone else's on the line by drawing attention to this or anything.

It doesn't matter though. You have it locked, in a box, accessible only to you. Do you think a crook with a gun is going to give you time to fumble around in your truck, looking for your keys and then brandish it?

How does the Dirty Harry fantasy in your head play out? Does the bad guy wait until the live shot is over before confronting you, and then the reporter keeps them distracted while you secretly get your handgun? Maybe you have the gun on you at all times, and when the time is right you get the drop on the bad guy? Magically placing all your shots center mass, being a hero, not hitting anyone or anything else in a wild display of adrenaline fueled inexperience?

You want to carry a gun, fine. I've worked in the SF market myself and know what dangers the crews face out there. A few of our reporters were victims too. But you sound like a walking lawsuit, and I hope you're discovered before someone gets hurt.
