You should re-read the post...Cumulus Media, as a whole, yes, has lost millions and millions; KNBR, individually, made money --KNBR is owned by Cumulus. Different accounts.
The Eastbay and Oakland can and HAS supported Major League Baseball. It takes a solid, LOCL owner committed to providing a decent product, not a flimsy, inept out-of-touch group like Lew Wolf and John Fisher, who still can't commit to a new baseball stadium in Oakland after years of making millions off MLB revenue sharing.
The Haas family promoted the team and was proactive with fans and built up community good will and the A's averaged 3 Million fans in the late 80's and 90's.
It takes a committed owner --the Eastbay community already has shown its commitment.
" Which goes to show if the A's owners tried to put a winning product on the field, they'd have better attendance.
"Which goes to show if the A's owners tried to put a winning product on the field, they'd have better attendance."
That goes for every professional sports team on the planet.
"They averages 2-3 million all through the McGuire/Canseco years to the Tejada/Giambi years. Far after the three world series of the early to mid '70s."
Who brought up the 70's? I was responding to the person who said "in the late 80's and 90's" so that's the era I was obviously referring to when I said "3 consecutive world series appearances." Notice I didn't say consecutive WS championships. Between a lot of winning during the late 80's and 90's, the Giants weren't very good and still playing in a hell hole which also helped A's attendance.
I'm too modest for that Rich. I would tell the bad things, and probably leave out the braggart stuff. I've been interviewed twice in my life..not bad. One wasn't so hot. I did have a "Radio"station leave a message saying they wanted to talk to me. No return number or I.D. Could have been telemarketer. Who knows? But,thanks anyways.
No matter our views of Kawakami, still gotta respect him for his clear disdain toward Screamin A Smith. Nobody else in the media nationwide is willing to state the obvious toward the Philly Phav.
I listened to that new 860 AM ...it had all the warmth of a frozen 7-11 pizza. All their programs are syndicated and all conservative ---bland vanilla wallpaper is more interesting.
Hey Rich.... if you could fix just one thing in bay area media, news / radio what would that be and why?? Also, is it true that chip franklin still picks coins up off the sidewalk every tmie he comes across one?? Thanks.
It's UNFIXABLE... too much corporate greed and ineptitude --thanks to Cumulus and IHeart Media--companies that are NOT ABOUT RADIO --toxic waste, really...I don't know about Chip Franklin and although I have many issues with the Chipster that wouldn't be of them.
I feel sorry for all the big, well-respected names who have to play their music for IHeart in Vegas every year. They don't realize how bad it is inside.
Jon Bristow subbed for Jeff Bell on KCBS yesterday afternoon. If this doesn't work into something full time for the big pipes guy, perhaps he can join Ed Baxter and Greg Jarrett over at Bloomberg. Any thoughts?
I don't get it - I am a fan of Katie MArzullo. She has been shoved around at KGO-TV from reporter to anchor to covering traffic accidents in San Jose on the 11. I hate to see good talent go to waste like that.
I agree with you that Marzullo is talented --it appears KGO doesn't feel the same way because, as you point out, she's been yanked around all over the place.
You might see her at another station here or out of the market where she could reinvent herself.
KM seems almost too professional for local in that she doesn't have that "dumb" look Rich loves to promote. She might be better served going to the cable networks, and engaging in real reporting.
I listen to KFI every day and she sounds good. She does the Morning Bender with Aaron Bender and also works with Bill Handel. She is moving up in the world.
This is a Raider Rich-related post. With the 95.7 mess ongoing, it will be interesting to see how the radio contracts of both the Raiders and A's turn out once their stadium issues get resolved by the end of the year (and both will - Ronnie Lott has too much invested in one, and once the Raiders have a final stadium spot, the A's will get theirs afterward).
My other Raider-related post is a question: With John Madden planning to make an official video presentation posthumously inducting Ken "Snake" Stabler into the Hall of Fame, as much as I can't stand the image-obsessed part of our society, do you think the video will give us a better idea when KCBS will resolve Madden's limbo status once and for all?
And as always, thank you for keeping all of us in the loop about all Bay Media matters from the inside, especially the ugliest Soap Opera of all that is the dictatorship-or-at-least-intimidating-adventures of the Bentley at both KRON and Cumulus.
The boys at the morning drive time at the Game, so much better and entertaining then KNBR morning drive. They actually talk sports 99% of the time. Also I love how Mac does not like Jimmy Fallon, perhaps because he is a million times more talented then him, with intimated singers.
Someone should give Dan Dibley a job because he's funny, witty, and doesn't take himself (or sports) too seriously.
And I'd also like to add, John Lund is fantastic at steering the ship. Best move Cumulus has made since, uhh...firing Renee and Randall for fcuking in the office.
Dan Dibley? He's full of himself! Thinks he is the smartest guy in the room and is smarmy and annoying to listen to. He needs to go back to announcing batters for some Little League organization....
No way is Lund a ship steerer of anything. This immature, teenage sounding lightweight is another catastrophe for cumulus and we listeners, now ex-listeners.
Rich, do you think the day of the "star anchor," a Van Amburg or a Dave McElhatton or a Kate Kelly or a Dennis Richmond is dead and gone for good? Do people really care about anchors much any more?
Yes, Nick, I think locally, they care...certainly, a Dan Ashley here, or Frank Somerville there, there are star anchors...The time and era dictate the style and play--the 70's and 80's and 90's were largely devoid of Internet --that has an effect.
I listen to Ray 2014 interview on You-tube as well. It reminded me of waking up at 2AM turning on KGO and some poor guy is catching hell. I would like to have Ray and Bernie back again.
Is there any way to know when John Rothmann or some other class act KGO talk show host will be on. I haven't listened to KGO since it went haywire years ago. In fact since KGO went haywire is about the time I started reading your fantastic blog. Keep up the great work you do for the Bay Area Rich...
Pat Thurston has John on frequently in this political season, she has him on as a political analyst, but he more of a co host, also he sits in for Pat now and than. Apparently, as much as I don't care for Drex, he has the good sense to have John Rothmann on for political analyst, since I don't listen to Drex very much, I don't know the format, but when John is on with Pat, he answers callers, as I said, more of a co host than an analyst. I'm delighted, John knows what he is talking about, and he asks the right questions. Also he keeps Pat's very left wing views (and I'm a liberal) in check. Just really good radio all around, very hard to find these days.
Rigo Chacon the real estate agent is not the former reporter. Rigo is enjoying retirement, he does some public speaking and is involved in the community. He looks to be in good health, is happy and is enjoying retirement.
How about those hideous new graphics on NBC Bay Area? I watch to drink in the beauty of Jessica "Jess" Aguirre and I'm distracted by these dumb boxes that tell me the expected high for San Jose et al. Raj Mathai's grey highlights are obscured by a cesspool of text. The weather guys benefit here as viewers no longer focus on how unreal their hairpieces are, but rather on the silly lines and boxes at the bottom of the screen.
How is Ryan Scott allowed to shill his soon-to-be-opened SF restaurant on his screeching, mawkish KGO radio program? Why does he have the same buddies/cronies on as guests? Why does he even have a show on KGO? How is he the 'next generation'?
Why are the guys on a certain network news station so unattractive? Is there a market for that or is it just that they're trying to save a buck? I swear I can't watch them!
So Cumulus is now a penny stock but you reported profits in the tens of millions. What gives?
ReplyDeleteYou should re-read the post...Cumulus Media, as a whole, yes, has lost millions and millions; KNBR, individually, made money --KNBR is owned by Cumulus. Different accounts.

Kate Cagle Tweeted she bought new Goodwill furniture for her new L.A. apartment.
ReplyDeleteHow little does KRON pay reporters?
Very little, but enough to buy Arby's...hey Stan, e-mail me, I want to interview you.
DeleteI'm too modest for that Rich. I would tell the bad things, and probably leave out the braggart stuff. I've been interviewed twice in my life..not bad. One wasn't so hot.

DeleteWell,do any if us know the REAL Ray Ratto? the REAL Tim Kawakami??..lol
DeleteI'll sit for an interview, Rich.
DeleteI do however demand a bowl full of M&M's for the interview with all of the brown M&M's removed.
No matter our views of Kawakami, still gotta respect him for his clear disdain toward Screamin A Smith. Nobody else in the media nationwide is willing to state the obvious toward the Philly Phav.
DeleteAny idea why all the Salem stations have been off the air since sometime yesterday? Could it be Lucifer? Wait a minute, maybe not. She's in Philly.

ReplyDeleteOh, the pipes guy is probably going to remain at KCBS doing fill-in waiting in the wings for Bunger's job when Stan retires one of these days.
DeleteRich
ReplyDeleteWill another local radio station pick up the Alan Colmes Show?
Probably not, at least not live but you can listen to his show by going to his website and clicking the on-line stream, I do believe.
DeleteYeah, Cumulus, when they start getting rid of live talk.
DeleteI don't get it - I am a fan of Katie MArzullo. She has been shoved around at KGO-TV from reporter to anchor to covering traffic accidents in San Jose on the 11. I hate to see good talent go to waste like that.

ReplyDeleteJJL is at KFI in LA last I heard.
DeleteShe is so less annoying on a real radio station.
DeleteI listen to KFI every day and she sounds good. She does the Morning Bender with Aaron Bender and also works with Bill Handel. She is moving up in the world.
DeleteRich? Is it true? Small hands?
ReplyDeleteNone of your damn business.
DeleteBut cute, thanks.
Rich, will you interview the ASS!!! Guy?
ReplyDeleteHell no.
DeleteHows your mom Rich? You and your family are always in my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteThanks from San Diego.
:-)
Thank You for asking: she's doing OK.
DeleteThanks from the 415 to San Diego.
Rich any word about Ray Tally? or how the Razor from KNBR is doing?
ReplyDeleteTaliaferro is alive apparently elusive and working on a book.
DeleteRalph Barbieri is enjoying his retirement and teen-age kid in Marin County.

95.7 mess?
DeleteAs in chronic subpar ratings, even when the A's played well for a 3-year run. Even while making an inroad or two v Knibber, it is nowhere near enough.
DeleteThanks for the kind words.
ReplyDeleteThe Madden video will not have any bearing on his future at KCBS; I'm assuming he wouldn't do the video if he were in a haggard state, just a guess.
The boys at the morning drive time at the Game, so much better and entertaining then KNBR morning drive. They actually talk sports 99% of the time. Also I love how Mac does not like Jimmy Fallon, perhaps because he is a million times more talented then him, with intimated singers.
ReplyDeleteBoth morning shows are awful, top to bottom.

ReplyDeleteRetired and enjoying his life outside of "San--Ho-Say" ...
Deletethere is 2014 radio interview with Taliaferro, and he's as angry as ever, not asleep like you might think-interview on you tube
ReplyDeletewhen is the new traffic anchor for KGO starting?
ReplyDeleteShe's there best to my knowledge.
DeleteI listen to Ray 2014 interview on You-tube as well. It reminded me of waking up at 2AM turning on KGO and some poor guy is catching hell. I would like to have Ray and Bernie back again.
DeletePraise to Heaven yes, bring back Ray and Bernie! Listening to them at their heights between '92 and '07 was a great period, sadly vanished.

Rothmann has a Facebook page and he usually plugs his appearances.

DeleteRich,
ReplyDeleteAre Jim Dunbar and Ted Wygant from KGO still in the Bay Area?
Wygant is up in Oregon --Dunbar, I believe, resides in the Peninsula.
DeleteThe last I heard, Rigo Chacon was selling real estate in San Jose.
ReplyDeleteRigo Chacon the real estate agent is not the former reporter. Rigo is enjoying retirement, he does some public speaking and is involved in the community. He looks to be in good health, is happy and is enjoying retirement.

ReplyDeleteHey Rich, KCBS is no longer referring to the 8:15am sports as the "Madden segment."
ReplyDeleteHow is Ryan Scott allowed to shill his soon-to-be-opened SF restaurant on his screeching, mawkish KGO radio program? Why does he have the same buddies/cronies on as guests? Why does he even have a show on KGO? How is he the 'next generation'?
