KNBR/Cumulus Big Suits Aware of Video; Response: Laughter and Derision

The KNBR video that I posted--some of the worker bees complaining about the lack of a livable wage; has drawn the attention of management ...so far, with, get this, laughter and derision. I can't name names because it's second hand but either way, if this doesn't  rally up the troops, I don't know what will.

Nope, handing out extra bobbleheads and some Red Sox tickets isn't going to work, I don't think.

Should be an interesting Monday around the office come business hours.

  1. First,Pecon will find his times will be cut on air. Subtle and delayed for the start of that. The others might be told- "take a day off we have intern 18 year old Gary Sucknich to work today's board, don't worry about it.
The on air talent? Every man for themselves.

  2. Hey Sports Geeks: There's a fast food place in Pleasanton that is paying $14/hr. You can eat and make money at the same time. You could event talk sports with the clientele. Best of all worlds. Think about it.

  4. No mention of Anti-union guy Tom Tolbert? These sports hosts are gutless. The ones with guts are the ones hanging on to jobs.

It's a have and have-not reality in the radio world, but the sports stations are the ones keeping their properties afloat. Yet the producers at KNBR make less than their counterparts at Cumulus-SF.

Who's more valuable? The producer of the morning show at KNBR or Irish Greg at KFOG? Even Matt Pinfield? Those guys have little to not value while the producers grind away at KNBR.

Meanwhile, they never make any changes to that station.

How do you think the producers feel that their boss Jen is a "full time" employee with benefits but only works 4 days a week on the afternoon show? No one in the building thinks she has any value but she leaves early while we make $14. Thanks, Lee!

Some of you people might think we don't work hard, or that this is easy but that's not the case. Just because we enjoy the field doesn't mean it's easy. How many of us are even going to make it? 1-2%? We take risks doing this and the company uses the billing from our station to pay for everyone else.

We live in the Bay Area and it's very expensive. The Warriors, 49ers and Giants have done tremendous billing the last 6-7 years. And yet we earn less at KNBR than any producer in town.

    Does that make sense?

    1. What doesn't make sense is why you stay at a job you don't feel appreciated at.

    2. It's not a matter of whether or not you work hard. It's the fact that your "bosses" don't give a shit about you. Reality is they can find geeks like you at any community college or school of broadcasting. You won't get what you're seeking. Supply and demand.

The "bosses" don't give a fuck if there's a little glitch during the program. Look at KRON4. Errors galore at that place during their news programming. Bad graphics. Misspellings. Nobody cares. As long as they're saving $$$.

Wake up fools! You're expendable. They'll find someone else. You think that's bullshit? Go ahead and quit. Your chair will still be warm when the next sucker comes to take your place. The resume file is thick. You know it and I know it. Don't be surprised if that happens.

The radio business sucks. Your station is probably using the billings from the 49ers, Giants and Warriors to pay for other stations who can't carry their weight. They probably have to pay for debt service on their other properties as well.

It's tough talk, but it's reality.

    3. Tom Tolbert is anti-union? Shameful.
This is the same guy who supported Barrack Obama in 2008.
Now in 2016 he is silent on his support.
Well what do you expect from a guy who never graduated from college.

  6. Right about red neck P-con thinking Trump will take "care " of him. NOT! Put Rod Brooks crying about $$ on camera and you might get some where...

  7. High priced talent is to blame...Radnich rolling in on Bentley isn't going to get you any fans...when his producers spoon feed him everything...

This issue is a downside of capitalism...you will be paid based on skill and demand. There is way too many people willing to do this job and do it cheap. Another issue is sports contracts themselves...ESPN, FOX, Comcast have made crazy deals with nearly every sport...and when the ad revenue declined in 2008 and hasn't bounced back...TV and Radio have been scrambling...thats why you see such a charge with social media

TV and Radio need the broadcast rights to baseball...Player contracts get higher and higher... and you see the pinch... ESPN last fall laid off 400 employees and have kicked to the curb a lot of talent...because they don't spin enough profit for Disney execs... meanwhile Bryce Harper is projected to earn 700 million dollars. in his next contract. I tell every intern I see...get out...get into computers and coding...go be an intern at Google. I know some of these people at KNBR personally... my hats off to them...

    1. No one cares what Gary drives. Everyone working in sports wants to attain that. He's not begrudged for his success. He is begrudged for not giving a crap about any of us though.

You think it's "easy" and that our jobs are replaceable? That's a good one. Just because you like sports doesn't mean you know how to produce a radio show, or even understand the nuances of how/why they work.

Only the most desperate would take our jobs if they didn't love it, and they would probably suck at it. I see who KGO has been hiring the last couple of years. It's people with no experience and it shows.

  8. 9:19.... you don't like white people we get that. The story is not about race or YOUR racism. I guess its really not much different then all the uneducated black men that thought Obama would save them. I hope you get the help you so desperately need and I wish you nothing but luck .

  10. What a collection of geeks. The fat tub of goo on the right is Baby Huey, the schlep for Lamont and Tonelli. Go get a real job guys. As you've seen on this blog, you're not going to get a boost in pay. Actually, you'll probably be looking for work very soon. There's no future in being a radio sports producer. Ball games aren't played 24/7. How much can you dissect the NBA Finals? They don't last forever. Get a clue.
