Team,
Today, we have set in motion new programming strategies for both KGO and KFOG that will help us better meet the needs and demands of our listeners, advertisers and community. Our goal is to reposition these two stations for future growth and strength through new and enhanced programming, and new additions to the KGO and KFOG teams, including programming veteran Bryan Schock, whom we announced this morning as the new OM/PD of KFOG and KSAN. We believe the new programming direction will put KGO and KFOG on the best paths to growth and success.
Unfortunately, to achieve that goal, we had the difficult but necessary task today of restructuring our KGO and KFOG station staffs to allow us to meet the new needs of these two stations as we invest in new programming that is redefined, refocused and of the highest quality. Today, we informed the affected employees about these changes, which included the elimination of a number of full-time and part-time positions across these two stations, primarily in the news department at KGO and in key dayparts at KFOG. I want to thank those professionals who are leaving us for their contributions and service to KGO and KFOG, and wish them only the best as they continue on in their careers.

I will be sharing with you more specific details on these programming shifts and additions in the next few days and weeks. In the meantime, please reach out to me directly with any questions.

That is a lipstick-on-a-pig memo if ever I saw one.
ReplyDeleteMr Whittmeyer -- You wouldn't have had to make all of these, uh, "adjustments" had Cumulus just left well enough alone in December 2011.
ReplyDeleteYour, uh, "adjustments" in December 2011 contributed to Mr Burns' death, IMHO.
You and Cumulus should have left well enough alone, but in your own minds' wisdom, you think you know best. You don't.
Well said!!
DeleteI love how during Ronn's final show he made it all about Ronn. He says things like, "I'm just moving over a few studios...follow me there...help the company make KSFO 'something'..."
ReplyDeleteYeah, Ronn, why don't we all help Cumulus make KSFO something.
You're a low life. I didn't believe it when everyone would say it, but you truly are a low life.
People lost their jobs today. People lost their jobs 4-5 years ago.
You're worried about moving over a couple of doors.
I'm glad I'll never have to see your face again.
You'd be the first guy with his hand up when the Germans asked, "Who wants to help us?"
You're scum, Owens.
After what happened to Ralph, they had to keep Ronn. It's like being sent to the Island of Misfit Toys though.
DeletePerhaps I'm very old school but I thought Ronnnnnn was crap back when he was big time for hanging up on callers just to prove he was an ass.
DeleteWatching Ronnnnn's career is a bit like looking back at old girlfriends you once thought well of until you looked back at reality and saw how bad they really were. I personally stopped listening to him in the early 1980's.
My thanks to the good people at KGO who made it a good brand back in the day you guys were the best and deserved better than what you were dealt. The older I get the more I realize life is something you merely survive as sooner or later something like this comes along in all of our professional lives. Best of luck to you frankly you are too good for them!
I thought KSFO was already "something" more popular than KGO. It's already "something". What the hell is he talking about? Oh, himself...I forgot.
Delete@12:06
Delete"You'd be the first guy with his hand up when the Germans asked, "Who wants to help us?"
Oh, please. Leave the Germans out of this. They've advanced a lot further on many fronts than your country has.
Rotten, will miss many people, mostly the John Hamilton show. Today I took KGO off my I-Heart media, and plan to never tune in again, except to discover which businesses I will never frequent.
DeleteWhat a bunch of BS.
ReplyDeleteThey really must be think we are stupid.
KGO=RIP
and listen now to KGO they have some stupid programmig how great the Bay Area is etc.
Cumulus sucks. I hope they are RIP soon
Well, you didn't expect them to just carry on business as usual, did you? The station is in turmoil right now.
Delete90 minutes of this crap. What are they doing DARING us to turn the station. Well, I already have but keep dropping in to 810 to see how long they will keep this up. Unbelievable.
DeleteThey'll be dslisted from the NASDQ NMS exchange by about May. Few companies recover from that. This makes one wonder if recent moves resulted from a line Mike McV toked and he just decided this was the right thing to do. Inconsistency is just about the worst thing you can do to build an audience. They're in panic mode. They're squirming in their death throes.
DeleteIt's all demographics. KGO"s listeners are too old. They want to reach younger people. Only problem is, I don't think younger people are
Deletelistening to AM radio.
"I don't think younger people are listening to AM radio."
DeleteThey're not. Many younger people don't even know what AM radio is, let alone listen to it. Younger people would never listen to AM, so KGO is foolish no to try to program to the available audience in some way.
"Position KGO and KSFO for further growth." There hasn't been an ounce of growth since these nitwits showed up and blew the station up. Cumulus destroyed an iconic Bay Area brand and in doing so did a disservice to the entire Bay Area. I hope people in the Bay Area remember how horrible this corporation is and continue to ignore their properties.
ReplyDeleteWell they proved it once again, Cumulus is run by a bunch of morons. Taking something (KGO) that had been already crippled by earlier moves and made it unlistenable. Please, please, please, please, please Cumulus sell the station! And by the way, what recorded crap are you running now. Just abysmal. Oh, and putting on Armstrong and Getty, I will never listen again.
ReplyDeleteYour comment is gone, Val, but I'm SURE I agree with it IN SPADES. The suits at KGO are the dumbest bunch of hammers I've ever had the displeasure to know. Thank god not in person. San Francisco Bay Area deserves so much better than them.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you Val. I've been a KGO hardcore listener for over 30 years now. The last changes were brutal but I hung in there. If Pat or John aren't on, I'm definitely DONE with KGO.
DeletePat and John aren't on. That's a fact.
DeleteKGO running the most insulting promo maybe ever?
ReplyDeleteTelling people that they need to change? That they need to be young again? That they are beholden to social media, and to listen to their stations?
What a fucking nightmare. Whose idea was this?
Is this the guy who does pushups on youtube?
You're basically insulting what little audience you have, and you're not speaking to a single person this resonates with.
Whatever they touch turns to shit.
I heard the promos as well 12:30pm
DeleteThey are targeting the Murph and Mac audience.
Cumulus Media Inc. (CMLS) the stock, has dropped from over $20 down to 47 cents...
ReplyDeleteEven over less than two years it has dropped from over $7.00, down to 47 cents today.
Real genius types running the company.
As to Ronn going over to KSFO, I think that is great.
Despite the "hater" crowd...tens of thousands of us enjoy him and will turn our dial.
That new stuff that is being played on KGO right now... is truly bizarre. Like they are trying to blend the 1967 Summer of Love with some techno-attraction... and saving the Earth while channeling Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus...
Ronn doesn't even have a 1 share. Save your "tens of thousands."
DeleteI also think it's great that Ronn is going KSFO. I been listen to him for 40 years and went throught his life with him. I was so scared that he was going to retire. KSFO is my new station. No more KGO.
DeleteIs Ronn physically and mentally able to make such a dramatic switch? Maybe..and I hope so.
DeleteThe person calling Ronn a scum is an IDIOT.
ReplyDeleteI love this line... meet the needs and demands of our listeners, advertisers and community. BS. It's to meet your bottom line. You don't care about the Bay Area listeners. You care about cutting dollars and making the company happy. You want to make the listeners happy, then listen to the listeners. Armstrong and Getty. OMG. Just what we want. And infomercials on the weekend selling bogus crap.
Maybe Karel will be coming back.
ReplyDeleteTOP COMMENT!
DeleteKGO is dead meat. I guess it is no accident that Chip is on vacation now. What did you do, fire him by e mail. You have ruined KGO you bastards.
ReplyDeleteKGO is dead. Whittmayer you are a dick.
ReplyDeleteWow. Didn't think KGO could slide any lower, but it has managed to do so. Bye, Bye KGO. Who needs the crap you're dishing?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteBruce, I miss hearing your radio shows that you hosted and was always enlightened by your vast sports knowledge.
DeleteRich says "Lee gets it." Lee is trash. Lee is dumb. Lee is trying to hold onto his job until retirement and wants KGO off his plate.
DeleteLee is truly terrible. Has been since he was a weasel working in production.
No more Ronn Owens? No more me listening to KGO. You screwed it up in 2011, had to go back to newstalk a few years later, only to hire on-air nitwits not worth listening to. Chip Franklin? Drex? Please! They're not newstalk, they're drivel. Ronn was the only reason to listen to KGO. With him gone, so is most of the bay area listeners.
ReplyDeleteRonn's lost whatever edge he had. Doesn't sound right. His best days are behind him. Not a huge Chip fan, Drex is just bad radio. Plays clips all shift long. I hope there's a place for Pat, John, Christine and even Copie. Better than any of the crap on 560 and 910 (except for Alan Colmes).
DeleteKGO's old 3rd string aren't better than KSFO or 910, sorry to burst your bubble.
DeleteHow many times do you have to trot out a new PD, fire great DJ's who the entire Bay Area loves, destroy a great station all in the vain hope of making more elusive profits? Gee, how about running ADVERTISING on the STREAM between bouts of music instead of the unbelievably incessant, pointless, generic techno-elevator music crap? I thought you were all about advertising and profits? Yet you let that potential time to make money just sit there and fester and do nothing. Cumulus, you are the WORST media company ever. You destroy everything you touch. You already destroying KFOG once... and you rehired almost everyone your listeners wanted to hear. How many times are you going to play these games before you get your heads out of your asses???
ReplyDeleteThey had to fill in the gaps with music instead of advertisements because no one wants to advertise with station no one listen.
DeleteHow can you run advertisements when there is none to ran? No one buys air time for commercials when KGO has no listeners.
DeleteIt is obvious the Cumulus management team is clueless in running a radio station so the air staff is paying the price.
What a bunch of worthless corporate euphemisms that former devoted KGO listeners can see right through and won't buy.
ReplyDeleteRonn has been phoning it in for years. A&G consistently put on a much more listenable show, with well planned segments, fast paced and quick witted comments about topics in the news. Ronn has been unauthentic and unlistenable for years now...
ReplyDeleteA&G is just more right-wing crap, just not as extreme as the KSFO hate fest. Bay Area radio is no different than most of the country now. Where's a liberal suppose to go now? At least HRC will win the presidency, so that's good.
Delete2:16 I'll take right wing talk over left wing crap any day of the week.
DeleteThe vast majority of voters in the area are left leaning. If a station wanted bigger ratings a show like A&G would never see the light of day west of Tracy. Do A&G take calls? No. Do they cover topics of concern for folks living in our area? No.
Deleteyou will take right wing talk over what you call left wing crap because you are a right winger who is not interested in an opposing point of view. I will take left wing talk over right wing crap any day. Except I do listen to Tom Sullivan on 1530 noon to 3 p.m. I never warmed up to Chip Franklin, and I use to listen to Tom when he was just local out of Sacramento, he might be conservative, but he take calls from everyone, he is pretty fair, and he doesn't rant and rave, or blame EVERYTHING on liberals, like Rush and Savage
DeleteOn their webpage, they've unlisted all their shows. I guess everybody is gone. SHIT FUCK.
ReplyDeleteThank Bill Clinton. Deregulated FCC, Repeal Glass Steagall, "Free" Trade - NAFTA, GATT, etc. Vote for Hillary so she can shove TPP down our throats.
ReplyDeleteYour free to listen to whatever the Oligarch's allow on the air. It's an election year. Time to rearrange the Deck Chairs.
Why don't you blame the Dickeys and nepotism in general? Because that's what caused this. People who don't have the brains, but have trust funds.
DeleteThanks Democrats.
Delete"San Francisco's... Great Oldies!"
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aF7V2dSvxpo
"Eighty-One, Kaaaay Gee-Oh!"
That thought ran through my mind too 1:24pm.
DeleteK-GO "All the Hits, All the Time" The Big 8-Ten.
All said in a booming voice.
Ronn at KSFO? Ye, Gods! All the male talkers over there are forced-birthers who think the government should be in charge of female reproduction. Ronn, for all of his warts, at least has the decency to believe that women don't need or deserve government supervision of their private parts.
ReplyDeleteKGO seems to have a death wish and I think it is time for the listeners to stop bargaining and let them go quietly into the night. They chose irrelevance and now they have it.
" women don't need or deserve government supervision of their private parts. "
DeleteIf we get weak leadership, it won't matter anymore. Muslims winning would mean that women don't have to make those kinds of choices anymore.
Why are people surprised? Wittmayer, as the local ad community and competitors know, is incompetent; at best. But he is really nothing more than a mouthpiece for Atlanta; was hoping that Milner (oversees West coast) would bring some class to the operation, but he too has failed. What a sorry state of affairs....I understand Wittmayer hanging in because he would not be able to find another job, but Milner is a truly talented Manager.
ReplyDeleteGood bye KGO. Since you changed from all talk a steady decline. Your weekends with the vitamin commercials are a joke also! Bye after 20 years.
ReplyDeleteBye after listening for 40 years.
DeleteHell, when they started taking Vi@gra ads during the morning news I knew they were drain circling. The radio equivalent of web chum.
DeleteRonn going to that conservative noise station KSFO is laughable, although he's gotten more conservative over the last 10 years. Compared to what I heard on there when I switched to check, he will still be a flaming communist by comparison.
If KGO goes to syndicated "talk" (most of which is more conservative drivel or entertainment garbage), there's no point. The reason I listened to KGO is for LOCAL news, LOCAL traffic and LOCAL talk.
BTW, IIRC 740 AM has traffic on the 8s.
World is still intact and sky has not fallen! There are so many choices in radio stations thanks to internet! This is what matters, having choices! Ronn is fading away into the sunset. That is the way it is!
ReplyDeleteLOL Ronn at KSFO, how embarrassing.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked today when I turned on KGO at noon. I thought I had inadvertently changed stations. Nope it was 810. No Pat Thurston filling in for The Whiner. All week she has been saying she will be replacing him until Friday. Sadly I guess it is now time to go back to paying for Sirius as Sacramento is a wasteland when it comes to radio - AM or FM.
ReplyDeleteTry KMJ 580AM out of Fresno...you should be able to get it. It's no KGO, but it's not bad.
DeleteJust put the final stake through the heart of KGO. Killing off KFOG too sounds like - it sounded like easy listening or something today. This is a good reason why large conglomerates like Cumulus should not have multiple stations in one market....my kfog and kgo presets are gone effective immediately.
ReplyDeleteI second that motion.
DeleteSF used to have great local radio and personalities, then corporate radio came in and scooped up all the stations and had them play
Deletemiddle of the road homogenized bullshit. "and the beat goes on"........
Glad to see Armstrong & Getty get a stronger station. Thought they could move to KFSO, never suspected, KGO, but Sussman's ratings are up and he starts earlier. A&G is much better than news repeats on 810 currently. These guys are smart, bet the tone some of their views down a bit.
ReplyDeleteI can't listen to Sussman for more than 2 minutes, and can tolerate A&G for maybe 5. Bring back Green 960 with Bill Press and Stephanie Miller.
DeleteCumulus destroyed kfog years ago. That's why Dave morey left. Cumulus doesn't give a rats ass about the listeners or what they want or they would have stopped all the garbage radio they have been airing for the last 5 years.... Sorry to see the final hang outs leave - won't be missing krapfog though.. I remember the day they flicked the classic rock switch from country back In the early 80's... Good run.
DeleteI give these new shows 2 years top and they will be right back to today again. The only way to revive KGO is to go back to local talk, add a bunch of tech stuff for the Millenniums and local for the rest of us Boomers and GenX'er. Doing this but without Cumulus in the control or they will muck it up the moment things starts to work.
Delete3:26 you getting your wish, Stephanie Miller will be on 910 am in the mornings. Although I lean left and would like to have the choice between a few more liberal leaning hosts, never cared for Stephanie,s show or format, do wish Bill Press could be heard in the Bay Area
DeleteRadio? WTF is a radio? Oh, right - those things in cars that Apple products replaced.
ReplyDeleteWho GAS? Not me. By the number of comments posted so far, I'd say some people GAS.
Sorry for your loss - if that was the gist of this convo.
Apple? Is that the company that makes those phones and wouldn't help the country by hacking into just one phone, that of a terrorist? I've heard of them.
DeleteIs all that weird recorded nonsense they were playing this afternoon what we're going to here on 810 now? No, thanks. Making my complete switch to PBS. Have been gradually going that way anyway.
ReplyDeleteKGO could become the West Coast's first all-infomercial station. Colon-blow half-hours...could they be on the way during weekday drive times? How patheetic.
ReplyDeleteI heard part of Ronn's show during my lunch today. Maybe 11:35-11:45. Ten minutes. All I knew was that he was going to KSFO. I couldn't wait to get off work at 3 and hear who's coming back to KGO. Who's replacing Ronn? Brian Copeland? That would be nice. Maybe Christine, Pat, John, etc. will all have their own shows again??!!!! 15 hours per week. Who's replacing Ronn? Maybe even Ray will come back!!
ReplyDeleteWell, I got in the car at 3 and I heard the worst crap ever to come out of KGO. Ever. I was thinking that some moron got a new job there and had the most irritating intro ever. But it wouldn't end!. I kept going back and forth between KNBR, KSFO, and KGO. I just didn't want to miss the moment when the new host started talking. But there is no host. Just some weird screwed up noise that some may call music. It took me about 12 minutes, but I finally figured out, it's over. No more KGO at all. I have no idea what they're trying to do. Some weird music with talking in the background interrupted occasionally with a song that I'd rather not hear. Good thing I have Sirius XM.
Over the last few weeks, I posted in youtube, a few old recordings of Ray, Bernie, Duane Garrett, and Shawn Nixx (how to you spell her name?). Search under "abox fullofassettetapes" if interested. More to come soon.
correction
Deleteit's "aboxfullofcassettetapes"
Apparently the crap on KGO will be playing until 6am Tuesday, when "The new KGO!" will air. Wow, how sad. Radio in the Bay Area is officially dead.
DeleteTo whom is this new KGO trying to appeal? Young people don't listen to talk radio, so you won't get a new audience. You will lose your old audience. I loved Ronn, Pat, Brian, and Chip, and I will listen to Ronn on KSFO. As sad as Wittmayer, or whatever his name is ....it happens in lots of industries....Wittmayer wouldn't have a job if he didn't do something like change things. He probably doesn't do anything else. It is his reason to exist with a job.
ReplyDeleteThis is corporate top down management at its worst, executed (the correct word) by a bunch of folks in Atlanta... the same folks who got all these stations in a mess in the first place. Call it programming by spreadsheet.
ReplyDeletedoesnt anyone realize this is a GOOD thing? it just means more talk, less news. this is what people wanted. more talk show hosts coming in. ill give them a shot.
ReplyDeleteI hope so. You wouldn't know from listening to what they're playing right now. I did hear them say something about starting April 4 or 5. But what are they doing right now, trying to scare everyone away?
Delete@Larry...it's a standard formula for "flipping" a station. I've never heard it used on a news/talk station, but they're still following the format. Drop all ads, play stuff that hints at what the new format will be.
DeleteRonn's show will fail on a 3-6pm slot as there will be few, if any, callers during this busy time period. Sad, but true. At least we won't have to choose between Ronn and Gil Gross - a tough choice at best.
ReplyDeleteKGO pretty much stinks as it is wit the exception of the Ronn Owens morning slot, and this could be the death knell for a once fine Bay Area station.
The morning news team at KGO should have been gone a long time ago - they were a poor excuse for a news program and are lucky they lasted this long.
ReplyDeleteJust came in and heard KGO and what it calls programming. Well, that is it--I will be a KCBS listener for the whole day from now on. It is indeed a sad day for the remaining radio employees at KGO. This company does not have a clue of how to run a radio station!!
ReplyDeleteThe website now says "the next generation of KGO 810 is coming Tuesday morning at 6am"
ReplyDeleteGene Burns shakes his head
ReplyDeleteThe Dickhead brothers truly are the dumbest bunch of motherfuckers on the planet.
ReplyDeleteI don't like those guys, either, but in all fairness these moves are coming after the Dicks have been extracted, now flacid.
DeleteIn December 2011, Ronn said he was "excited" about the future of KGO. I'd like to ask him if it turned out the way he imagined it would, and what's so exciting about that? Also, how excited is he now about the future of KGO? Also 2: Will he ever admit that Cumulus made a huge mistake in Dec 2011 and that he knew it at the time, and they're making a bigger mistake now?
ReplyDeleteIf he had any balls he'd just walk away from this whole mess but apparently this dude needs the money.
DeleteIt's often best to not be the last one to leave the party. I think Ronn's situation is an example of that.
DeleteI suspect Cumulus decided to do this at the end of the quarter for more than pure financial reasons. They get to sell the no cost programming using the last ratings from the Spring book which included Ronn and the news operation. Not great, but still will be far better numbers than they'll have with the syndicated crap. KGO never recovered the listeners from the first massacre and this new cheap ass move will probably take the station down to unmeasurable ratings. The company is just parking a lot of these properties to await the bankruptcy which is coming within a year or so.
ReplyDeleteGreat News! Stephanie Miller is now on 910 starting this morning replacing the boring A&G show. YES!!!
ReplyDeleteZero comments about KFOG. Probably because they have/had zero listeners.
ReplyDeleteTheir ratings weren't great but still higher than KGO.
DeleteNo one seems to be mentioning KFOG, another legendary station that died yesterday. Must be a dozen fired employees there too but I haven't seen any names.
ReplyDeleteNo, there are plenty of KFOG listeners, but they're not in the demo the new PD wants = axe. Annalisa is the only one I know, but the radio station is automated this morning, so I'm sure it's the entire morning show crew. Rosalie? Probably also. I was a long-time listener so it is sad news for me. KGO died years ago. RIP SF radio, you were a beauty!!
ReplyDeleteWow. 89 posts! Looks like Rich has more listeners than KGO will ever have.
ReplyDelete89 posts and counting.
DeleteI certainly hope some of KFOG's shows survive --- "Acoustic Sunrise" is my favorite --- but based on early news, it doesn't look good. It did sound strange hearing Ronn Owens on Thursday talking about his new gig and what a great guy Justin Wittmeyer is ... given the news I heard later Thursday, it sure seems tone-deaf of him to be praising the guy whose lipstick-on-a-pig note cost 30-some people their jobs. Ronn and Chip were the only reasons to listen to KGO, in my opinion; I'll be interested to see what comes next. Hopefully that weird programming they have now isn't an indicator ...
ReplyDeleteWe have to hear that weird promo on KGO for the next 4 days? Insane! Might as well play x-mas music instead.
DeleteMy first idea was to drop some acid and sit in my living room listening to that KGO promo for hours on end. Trippy!
DeleteI remember the last time everyone got fired (except Ronn) and Gene Burns had a stroke shortly thereafter. It broke my heart and I still miss him. He died sometime after that. I will miss Ronn, Pat Thurston, Brian Copeland and even Karel, whom I haven't heard on the air in some time. I know there are other excellent staff and personalities who were axed for no reason that will serve residents of the Bay Area. It seems Cumulus is just about profits, not about people. A sad day for the Bay Area and a telling statement about unregulated capitalism.
ReplyDeleteDoes Cumulus only hire people dumber than bricks? They seem to screw up everything they touch.

.46 cents and you now own cumulus stock.appt someone to represent at their yearly board meeting.Skip enough lunches to force Brian Copeland onto their board.Adopt the hedge fund practices used against Yahoo. All that takes is 1.2% of the stock to bug them.Maybe they will divest themselves of Kgo and kfog.
ReplyDeleteAs an Ex Foghead, I knew things were going all to hell when the only ads were for carpet cleaning, payday loans, Paul Blanco cars, and a suicide walk. Then Poof!-every live human gone, to be replaced by testimonials for the OLD KFOG. Bad, just bad. With 10 at 10 gone, I'm tuning into Live 105.
ReplyDeleteIts all so sad to hear over 40 years of SF radio smashed and restructured all for the good of profit. We are still listening but just not to the stations you own.
ReplyDeleteGood lord, this morning duo SUCKS!!!! With all their lame sound clips and laughing at their own jokes. Reminds me of a family guy episode where Stewie and Brian did a radio show.....it really is that lame!!!
ReplyDeleteMusic matters? whose music?
ReplyDelete
