The Extra Death Memo Sent To CumulusSF KGO/KSFO/KFOG/KNBR By Cumulus VP/MM, Justin Wittmayer

Team,

Today, we have set in motion new programming strategies for both KGO and KFOG that will help us better meet the needs and demands of our listeners, advertisers and community. Our goal is to reposition these two stations for future growth and strength through new and enhanced programming, and new additions to the KGO and KFOG teams, including programming veteran Bryan Schock, whom we announced this morning as the new OM/PD of KFOG and KSAN. We believe the new programming direction will put KGO and KFOG on the best paths to growth and success.

Unfortunately, to achieve that goal, we had the difficult but necessary task
today of restructuring our KGO and KFOG station staffs to allow us to meet the new needs of these two stations as we invest in new programming that is redefined, refocused and of the highest quality. Today, we informed the affected employees about these changes, which included the elimination of a number of full-time and part-time positions across these two stations, primarily in the news department at KGO and in key dayparts at KFOG. I want to thank those professionals who are leaving us for their contributions and service to KGO and KFOG, and wish them only the best as they continue on in their careers.

I want to thank the remainder of our team for working with us through this transition and in the coming weeks and months, as the new KGO and KFOG take shape. Together, we will build these newly imagined stations into strong and vibrant brands that our listeners and advertisers will love.

I will be sharing with you more specific details on these programming shifts and additions in the next few days and weeks. In the meantime, please reach out to me directly with any questions.

  2. Mr Whittmeyer -- You wouldn't have had to make all of these, uh, "adjustments" had Cumulus just left well enough alone in December 2011.

Your, uh, "adjustments" in December 2011 contributed to Mr Burns' death, IMHO.

You and Cumulus should have left well enough alone, but in your own minds' wisdom, you think you know best. You don't.

  3. I love how during Ronn's final show he made it all about Ronn. He says things like, "I'm just moving over a few studios...follow me there...help the company make KSFO 'something'..."

Yeah, Ronn, why don't we all help Cumulus make KSFO something.

You're a low life. I didn't believe it when everyone would say it, but you truly are a low life.

People lost their jobs today. People lost their jobs 4-5 years ago.

You're worried about moving over a couple of doors.

I'm glad I'll never have to see your face again.

You'd be the first guy with his hand up when the Germans asked, "Who wants to help us?"

    You're scum, Owens.

    2. Perhaps I'm very old school but I thought Ronnnnnn was crap back when he was big time for hanging up on callers just to prove he was an ass.

Watching Ronnnnn's career is a bit like looking back at old girlfriends you once thought well of until you looked back at reality and saw how bad they really were. I personally stopped listening to him in the early 1980's.

My thanks to the good people at KGO who made it a good brand back in the day you guys were the best and deserved better than what you were dealt. The older I get the more I realize life is something you merely survive as sooner or later something like this comes along in all of our professional lives. Best of luck to you frankly you are too good for them!

    3. They'll be dslisted from the NASDQ NMS exchange by about May. Few companies recover from that. This makes one wonder if recent moves resulted from a line Mike McV toked and he just decided this was the right thing to do. Inconsistency is just about the worst thing you can do to build an audience. They're in panic mode. They're squirming in their death throes.

      Delete
    4. It's all demographics. KGO"s listeners are too old. They want to reach younger people. Only problem is, I don't think younger people are
      listening to AM radio.

      Delete
    5. "I don't think younger people are listening to AM radio."

They're not. Many younger people don't even know what AM radio is, let alone listen to it. Younger people would never listen to AM, so KGO is foolish no to try to program to the available audience in some way.

  5. "Position KGO and KSFO for further growth." There hasn't been an ounce of growth since these nitwits showed up and blew the station up. Cumulus destroyed an iconic Bay Area brand and in doing so did a disservice to the entire Bay Area. I hope people in the Bay Area remember how horrible this corporation is and continue to ignore their properties.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Well they proved it once again, Cumulus is run by a bunch of morons. Taking something (KGO) that had been already crippled by earlier moves and made it unlistenable. Please, please, please, please, please Cumulus sell the station! And by the way, what recorded crap are you running now. Just abysmal. Oh, and putting on Armstrong and Getty, I will never listen again.

Telling people that they need to change? That they need to be young again? That they are beholden to social media, and to listen to their stations?

What a fucking nightmare. Whose idea was this?

As to Ronn going over to KSFO, I think that is great.
Despite the "hater" crowd...tens of thousands of us enjoy him and will turn our dial.

That new stuff that is being played on KGO right now... is truly bizarre. Like they are trying to blend the 1967 Summer of Love with some techno-attraction... and saving the Earth while channeling Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus...

I thought you were all about advertising and profits? Yet you let that potential time to make money just sit there and fester and do nothing. Cumulus, you are the WORST media company ever. KGO seems to have a death wish and I think it is time for the listeners to stop bargaining and let them go quietly into the night. They chose irrelevance and now they have it.

But he is really nothing more than a mouthpiece for Atlanta; was hoping that Milner (oversees West coast) would bring some class to the operation, but he too has failed. What a sorry state of affairs....I understand Wittmayer hanging in because he would not be able to find another job, but Milner is a truly talented Manager.

Ronn going to that conservative noise station KSFO is laughable, although he's gotten more conservative over the last 10 years. Compared to what I heard on there when I switched to check, he will still be a flaming communist by comparison.

If KGO goes to syndicated "talk" (most of which is more conservative drivel or entertainment garbage), there's no point. The reason I listened to KGO is for LOCAL news, LOCAL traffic and LOCAL talk.

Maybe Christine, Pat, John, etc. will all have their own shows again??!!!! 15 hours per week. Who's replacing Ronn? Maybe even Ray will come back!!
Well, I got in the car at 3 and I heard the worst crap ever to come out of KGO. Ever. I was thinking that some moron got a new job there and had the most irritating intro ever. But it wouldn't end!. I kept going back and forth between KNBR, KSFO, and KGO. I just didn't want to miss the moment when the new host started talking. But there is no host. Just some weird screwed up noise that some may call music. It took me about 12 minutes, but I finally figured out, it's over. No more KGO at all. I have no idea what they're trying to do. Some weird music with talking in the background interrupted occasionally with a song that I'd rather not hear. Good thing I have Sirius XM.

  44. I suspect Cumulus decided to do this at the end of the quarter for more than pure financial reasons. They get to sell the no cost programming using the last ratings from the Spring book which included Ronn and the news operation. Not great, but still will be far better numbers than they'll have with the syndicated crap. KGO never recovered the listeners from the first massacre and this new cheap ass move will probably take the station down to unmeasurable ratings. The company is just parking a lot of these properties to await the bankruptcy which is coming within a year or so.

It did sound strange hearing Ronn Owens on Thursday talking about his new gig and what a great guy Justin Wittmeyer is ... given the news I heard later Thursday, it sure seems tone-deaf of him to be praising the guy whose lipstick-on-a-pig note cost 30-some people their jobs. Ronn and Chip were the only reasons to listen to KGO, in my opinion; I'll be interested to see what comes next. Hopefully that weird programming they have now isn't an indicator ...

    2. My first idea was to drop some acid and sit in my living room listening to that KGO promo for hours on end. Trippy!

  51. I remember the last time everyone got fired (except Ronn) and Gene Burns had a stroke shortly thereafter. It broke my heart and I still miss him. He died sometime after that. I will miss Ronn, Pat Thurston, Brian Copeland and even Karel, whom I haven't heard on the air in some time. I know there are other excellent staff and personalities who were axed for no reason that will serve residents of the Bay Area. It seems Cumulus is just about profits, not about people. A sad day for the Bay Area and a telling statement about unregulated capitalism.

  52. Does Cumulus only hire people dumber than bricks? They seem to screw up everything they touch.

  54. .46 cents and you now own cumulus stock.appt someone to represent at their yearly board meeting.Skip enough lunches to force Brian Copeland onto their board.Adopt the hedge fund practices used against Yahoo. All that takes is 1.2% of the stock to bug them.Maybe they will divest themselves of Kgo and kfog.

  55. As an Ex Foghead, I knew things were going all to hell when the only ads were for carpet cleaning, payday loans, Paul Blanco cars, and a suicide walk. Then Poof!-every live human gone, to be replaced by testimonials for the OLD KFOG. Bad, just bad. With 10 at 10 gone, I'm tuning into Live 105.

  56. Its all so sad to hear over 40 years of SF radio smashed and restructured all for the good of profit. We are still listening but just not to the stations you own.
