Sorry For Monday's AWOL I Was On Assignment; Copeland The Next Urkel; KTVU Masses Not Impressed With Fox Soup; Happy Tuesday

.

GEES --I TAKE A QUICK SABBATICAL TO CATCH MY BREATH ...AND ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE. C'MON PEOPLE. RELAX.

Besides which, I was on assignment.

*Dear Brian Copeland. You're destined to become the next Steve Urkel!

*Speaking of Copeland: Fire and Ice: Copeland and Christine Craft. Lots of history there.

*KGO Radio has No Program Director, no General Manger, no News Director: sort of a radio hamburger helper.

*Meanwhile, over at KTVU, the working masses are beginning to experience the real FOX. As in execs that have not a clue about the Bay Area but continue to inject very LA-like essence into the operation which is being received like, oh say, Mel Gibson emceeing a bar-mitzvah.

*By the way, Fox has essentially re-branded all its O and O's (owned and operated stations)--in case you haven't seen KTVU's website, here's the new look. Just a lovely mayonnaise look.

*Some schmuck KRON sports sub on Sunday night said the auto racer that was hit with flying debris from another race car was "in a coma." Even those the wire services had already pronounced the driver dead five hours earlier. KRON isn't hamburger helper--more like, chipped beef.

*KQED: Too many Peters popping Pollys. The money must just be pouring in.

*BREAKING NEWS! Copeland will be discussing race today--doesn't matter the subject. It's all black and white.

*OK, to be perfectly blunt and clear: No, I'm not a Brian Hackney fan. The man obviously knows his weather. That's good. It's just that he looks like a guy that thinks the whole world revolves around him and that's not quite accurate, Dennis O'Donnell is the most important person on the planet.

*Question: Why does Brian Copeland like the Oakland Raiders? Because their colors are Silver and Black!

*KRON's news set looks like the appliance department on the 5th floor of the Macys store in Union Square.

*As long as were talking about the mess at KPIX it should be noted that Juliette Goodrich is being WASTED --completely wasted on the weekend. Goodrich, who can be a load but a good load, should be front and center, Monday through Friday...somewhere. They.just.don't.listen.

*Does anyone actually read Chuck Nevius anymore?

*SF Gate, 2015: Pictures of mansions and food. News? Why bother.

*Dear Lisa Argen: I would like to read poetry to you and sip a few Coronas. I'll dress up.

*Leah Garchick: yenta stenographer --and the Chronicle wonders why nobody read the paper.

*Today on the Gil Gross Show, Gil will talk to himself about the benefits of cryonics.

  1. If KGO Radio is like Hamburger Helper, then lemme add some Butt Sauce...to spice it up a bit.

  2. I'm fascinated to learn here that Brian and I have a "history". I don't know Brian, nor he , me outside of the radio workplace. I haven't actually seen him for a couple of years. We have never had any kind of personal or social relationship, as is true with most people one knows from work. Do I agree with all of his points of view on the air? Of course not, I can't think of any two talk show hosts who agree with each other on every point. I was infuriated at his piling on in Bernie Ward's circumstance, which I felt was unnecessary and harmful to Bernie's family. He would disagree. That is life.
, I do have to wonder at the poster calling Chip Franklin's show "unlistenable". He's world -class, one of the few who has intricate takes on things. He's taken the time to actually understand the complexities of something like the first amendment, for example. Sometimes, I disagree profoundly, but he's always engaging and is a boon to critical thinking. He's also cute and funny. KGO is at its best when there is a lot of variety of voices, each playing off the other.

    1. Thanks, Christine, for your daily epitaph on why the world is wrong & you're right, as always. Don't bother signing me up for your Bernie Ward Fan Club.

  3. What was with Chris Plante last night instead of Pat for the Dregs?
Gee, Rich, glad you are back, was worried...you just can't go and leave us unattended we get to thinking you've completely abandoned ship --or that something is very wrong.

    1. The rerun of Chris Plante's WMAL morning show was puzzling, to say the least, as he was talking about the careening Dow Jones nearly 12 hours after it happened. KGO, always timely!!

    2. I worked to 9:30 p.m. last night, usually get off anywhere from 7 to 9 p.m. I have a long commute, and I have enjoyed listening to Pat Thurston filling in for Drex, gives me a choice between Pat and Alan Colmes, I cannot listen to Drex, sometime I turn on Glenn Beck (650 am Sacramento 6 to 9 p.m, or KSFO 9 p.m. to midnight) I don't agree with his views, but he can be entertaining, and his analysis of the difference candidates running for President is at least interesting. Last night I was very disappointed to hear this right wing idiot Chris Plante, he was totally predictable everything is the liberals fault, same mantra as Rush, and he called Joe Biden the most stupid man in politics. Really, just because you don't agree with someone does not mean they are stupid. Biden has a lot of experience, has throughout knowledge of many world affairs, (he suggested years ago after Bush made the mistake of getting rid of Sadam Hussein, to split Iraq up into 3 countries, as the only way to keep peace in that country, and he was right) I would love to see Drex disappear, but if they are going to replace with yet another right wing host, I guess I won't be listening. How about someone intelligent with a lot of historical and political knowledge, and local, like maybe John Rothmann, but I doubt there is anyone farsighted enough at KGO, to make such an obvious logical decision. Too bad, especially in this political season we have so few choices of really interesting, intelligent hosts.

  4. "KGO is at its best when there is a lot of variety of voices ..."'

WAS at its best. KGO is never going to return to its former level of listener-ship. Like newsprint - KGO is ... well, forever a shadow of what it was.

It will fit a small niche for a limited audience but that's it. To think otherwise is like believing Joe Montana could possibly come back to lead a team to the Superbowl. A complete fantasy.

  5. Not only is the KTVU website bland but not updated as much as other Bay Area TV stations when breaking important local news happens. Just watched KRON 4 9 am Morning News & a Brand New Live On Female African-American GA Reporter Avery Harper reported on the accident between a S.F. Motorcycle Officer and a car at Leavenworth & Turk. Every other word coming out of her mouth was either "um", "o" & "er". Very agonizing & painful to watch & listen to-KRON what TV station did you hire hear from--KOOKY from Dimwiddie Georgia? Rich keep up the great work!

  6. Why do you call Copeland "Urkel", a "janitor", "Byron Allen"? Is it because he is black?
You don't have the balls to print this Rich.

  7. Dear Ms/Mr "listener-ship", check your dictionary(9:31). We are going into a year plus of the most fascinating national and global politics ever. Radio talk, unlike football, does not depend on the physical agility of its hosts for success. A QB has a brief period of time, always limited by age and the decline of physical prowess. Joe Montana stretched that out, much longer than most. But of course, as an arthritic former champion, he
wouldn't be able to still do that. The worlds of politics, art, writing, and talking on the radio are not dependent on the same factors. As Ronald Reagan famously said to Walter Mondale," I'm not going to exploit for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience". I think newstalk radio is going to enjoy a major surge in the months ahead. The stations which have a well developed fleet of strong voices with differing opinions, playing off each other, will be the most successful.

    1. You are dreaming if you think KGO will see glory days again Christine. Talk Radio will survive, but KGO's heyday is past.

Look at the numbers - look at the revenue - look at the talent stream. &How can talent develop nationwide if all of the stations are broadcasting syndicated hosts?

NO ONE IS TUNING IN! Times - they have a'changed.

    2. Capitalization is not writing. It's not my fault that you are easily discouraged and have no vision. Why don't you just go play with a video game, or yourself.

    3. Christine, you remind me of my toilet after a big steak dinner...15 minutes of grunting, then "see you later, I'll be back." See you later!

    4. former kgo'er...I think you should eat as much steak as you possibly can. Stuff yourself silly with it to the brim. Add some bacon, heaps of it. Faster pussycat! I'm sure that you do lots of grunting in life. Pity

"It's just that he looks like a guy that thinks the whole world revolves around him"

    BINGO!!!!
I worked with the guy for a while so I know what you mean. Not a snob but so smug it is irritating.

  10. Copeland is the perfect symbiosis of Steve Urkel and Byron Allen with the "edge" of talking race which makes him very "dangerous". Let me guess. Copeland talked about the 15 black women who got thrown off the Napa wine train. Am I right?

  11. Spot on. Brian Urkel will surely speak about today's reporter killing. There is a racial angle so please dial: EIGHT ZERO EIGHT ZERO EIGHT ONE ZERO!
