Make no mistake, Christina Loren was one of NBC Bay Area 's most popular on-air personalities--and she surely knew it. But at the end of the May sweeps on Thursday, Loren was reminded that even a big-time air talent is not immune to getting the axe --and that's what Loren got most unexpectedly: her walking papers.
Loren, from a variety of insiders wasn't given a pink slip due to normal budgetary trimming--in fact, NBC paid her to leave! From multiple sources close to the matter, seems Loren was "difficult to work with."
A KNTV production staffer who spoke on condition of anonymity: "She was nice but she could be very difficult at times --it got to a point where she became an 'angry diva.'"
Another station source: "I like Christine a lot but you have to treat the people you work for with respect. She could be tough."
Loren indeed was very popular in the morning doing weather reports; she also did a ton of PR appearances for the station. This isn't going to break KNTV obviously but I'm pretty certain the decision to bounce the ultra-popular Loren probably was a combo-San Jose/NY move.
We'll be digging more. Stay tuned.
*Over at 900 Front, KGO-TV the talk amongst staffers was a memo distributed to staff from management: "Move around the camera more!" Among other things. Let's just say the initial chuckling has been off the chart.

She treated people like that because she was tired of backwater San Jose. If she had been happy to be there then she treats management right. Being popular she loved, being that it happens in San Jose she didn't.
ReplyDeleteI bet she felt "the hot blond" clock ticking away and wanted out.
You watch- she goes someplace faster and happening.
Weather Girl Barbie is gone? Wow.
ReplyDeleteChristina was not an "angry diva" and that is sad hear. She was just as nice to the janitor as she was to the G.M. Honestly, she was one of the hardest working people at the station who gave up most of her weekends to do community work. "Divas" don't operate like that.
ReplyDeleteThe quote was probably from someone who is truly an angry person, and who harbors resentment for nice people who happen to be very attractive. This happens more often than one might believe. I've seen it at the workplace many times.
DeleteMe? I AM an angry SOB (legitimately so), but I hate it when nice people are trashed in public for nothing except for someone else's own lack of self-worth.
I wouldn't doubt co workers- like the public- thought she was great. Her FB page has no superstars as her friends that I noticed. I always thought she seemed grounded.
ReplyDeleteShe just rubbed somebody wrong in management who can terminate with much blond prejudice.
Maybe, somebody up high wanted a Darya -Pero relationship KNTV style. And,was rebuffed. Uhuh, that would make an exec fire a ratings winner...
Once again, I find myself agreeing with Stan lately. Are these then, the End Times?
DeleteI agree with Stan, too. Just shoot me.
DeleteWhy would a superstar friend request a local meteorologist on Facebook? Christina is no big time name. You make no sense Stan.
ReplyDelete> I always thought she seemed grounded.
ReplyDeleteI don't know her but I'll just stressed, having worked in the business 15 years, you can't know if someone is nice or "grounded" or whatever by how they act on air. They're acting on air. They're paid to act on air. It's just like two actors in a romantic movie who kiss each other passionately when the cameras are rolling and then go off and sulk in their trailers when the take is over.
You don't know these people! You think you do, because part of their job is to make you believe it, but you don't.
Rich - You ought to do better than slander an on-air personality using a less than credible 'source' who claims to work in production. Fact is/was the producers are just out of college at KNTV and fumble newscasts constantly. The production crew threw Christina under the bus at every opportunity covering for their own miscues, unlike what your 'source' is saying. I'd consider reaching out to *her* and getting her side before you attack her character in such a one sided fashion based on a source who may be no higher up than a production assistant with an axe to grind.
Delete4:44, well said.

DeleteI have done business with many of these people. You are right. I can tell a couple good stories but won't.
Do you have the proper permits to dig and have you notified PG&E that you will be digging somewhere in the ground?
ReplyDeleteWell now she can go be a televangelist...
ReplyDeletePay's better.
DeleteRL,
ReplyDeleteAre you sure the KGO staffers weren't chuckling at KTVU's ratings? The only laughs at 7 these days is how bad KTVU is doing in the mornings and afternoons, nearly 30% down in May!
Paid to leave? Read sexual harassment settlement.
ReplyDeleteActually when you leave any company you are the enemy. If you don't believe me talk to any professional. Realtor, CPA, Mortgage Industry, Attorney's.
ReplyDeleteYou leave you are dead to the company!
When I watch the news, I want to ne informed, not entertained. She was a clown. Now, If only KRON can find a way to get rid of Folsom and PIX remove Roberta, were gold.
ReplyDeleteWeather and sports are the comic relief of the newscast. The talent doesn't need to be somber, unless they're reporting a story about devastation (like a hurricane or tornado, which thankfully we don't experience directly around here, though many of us have family and friends in those places). The talent needs to be likeable, sometimes funny, even occasionally buffoonish (e.g., Lloyd Lindsey Young), so long as they can get their information across to the viewers and not alienate them.
DeleteChristina was good, not great, but that maneuver where she walked towards the camera and thrust her chest out to accentuate the girls wore thin after awhile. Just like it has with Darya, and had to a lesser extent with Jacqueline. I like boobs as much as most men, but the fact is that Matt Elmore gives me just as much weather-I-need-to-know in between segments of Morning Edition on KQED radio.
You are really dating yourself with the Lloyd Lindsay Young reference.
DeleteKRON news is the worst. So generic. Have you seen their new weather slut?
ReplyDeleteI thought Christina was cute and funny and I am a straight woman - she really brightened up the place and cheered me in the morning! I am going to miss her for sure.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason I watched NBC was to see Christina.
ReplyDeleteShe was always very nice at Giants events.
Always said "yes" when asked if I could take a picture.
She was a lot better than who replaced her. She over did the sunniness and presentation of the gals a bit, but it wasn't that over the top. She did a good job and her cheeriness help disperse the fog of my mornings and summon the will to head to work. Not that I was helpless without her, but she made it easier. I definitely miss her.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Christina as she now works RFDTV in Nashville, Tennessee. She deserves better that what she got at NBC San Jose.
ReplyDeletePoor thing! She had to go to Tennessee?? After San Francisco Bay Area, what a culture shock.
ReplyDeleteCristina Loren is great and fun to watch. All those people criticizing her for looking good are envious and hypocrite. I can't believe people can be really mean and sexist. There is nothing wrong with the way she dressed. So what if she got a big boobs, that is something you can not hide. She dressed professional, talked well, and did her job very well.
ReplyDeleteThe new weather person is great but do not have the same charisma and rapport with the rest of the Bay NBC news as Cristina Loren did.
Wish you all the best Cristina Loren! You are a great person! Looking good is a blessing and don't let anyone take you down because of it.
Cristina was NO DiVA! I worked with her for years and she was one of the nicest, most down to earth people there. She's also smart, hard working and she was tough. I loved that about her, she doesn't crap from people. I'm also a woman so this isn't coming from some guy who had the hots for her. There are a lot of divas in every newsroom and a lot of A-holes but she was not one of them. Whoever said that, doesn't know her. Newsrooms commonly make changes to try and boost ratings. Good people get caught in the crossfire. Simple as that.
ReplyDeletepoor choice of morning wear and an innuendo free weather report would have been nice
