"I can't believe they let her go", her being Christina Loren from KNTV. I can't tell you how much I 've heard and read that reaction from people. Well, it's further proof that no one is safe anymore, not even those who are prominent personalities on their respective media outlets.
Not that Loren was hugely popular and garnered worship status but she definitely had a very large, loyal following among men, women too.
That didn't save her from her eventual fate though. As I pointed out, Christina will land on her feet and have a job soon. Those close to her told me she's almost relieved to be able to sleep in and have her mornings back. There's always a silver lining to being let go particularly when you might be looking for something new, something different, a change of scenery--everyone benefits.
*If Loren doesn't end up somewhere in the Bay Area, she might be headed to LA where they seem to snatch up many of our blond weather forecasters --i.e., Evelyn Taft and the like.
*Sure, Loren has the body. But even better, brains too. Score one for the Diane Sawyer card. Yes, I said, Diane Sawyer. Still hot and getting hotter.
*You, the average viewer, like and appreciate the KRON "Back Story" show. But you, the astute viewer have an understanding and can comprehend the real, non-bullshit goings-on at KRON and know the program is a crap full of...
*Memo to News Directors in town: No matter how many times you tell staff not to talk to me I still get the word. In fact, the more you spiel, the more info I get so keep it going. Some of you get it, others, not so sure.
*The morning weekday war at KGO-TV is once again boiling over. She might have to update the resume soon. He can't wait for them to lower the boom but that might require some heavy lifting if you know what I mean.
*KRON: Between your shitty lighting and the camera in anchorwoman's face you really don't know what the hell you're doing. If this doesn't eventually get fixed, you might really be an albatross --wait a minute.
*I don't have the information yet or the breakdown but I can bet KPIX had a spectacular May sweeps for 11 PM, thank you David Letterman.
*Speaking of the devil, quick rundown on May sweeps: KGO, very good, ditto, PIX. KTVU and KNTV, flat. KRON: Don't even ask. Time for the doofus to commence screaming and yelling on Tuesday.

From the day she started she seemed too big for KNTV. Larger then life with the look, the last name, and that didn't seem equal to Hooterville (so to speak) San Jose.
ReplyDeleteI could think of a dozen San Francisco weather people that she could replace. Not KRON. For her, that's a step back. Imagine her and Radnich? If Jackie Bennet didn't suffer the fool gladly,Loren would blow him (so to speak) out of the water.
I'm actually surprised nobody had hired her away before. Weather Channel Goddess at least.
I don't watch much of KNTV. I don't dislike it, but I got out of the NBC habit when I dropped cable for about 10 years, and NBC went from KRON to San Jose. I've never gravitated back to them, when I re-cabled.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who Christina Loren is, but she must be pretty spectacular at her job to warrant 4 leading threads on "415 Media," and so many responses (as a woman, I'm unimpressed with the comments on her physical person). If she's that good, and that bright ... I certainly wish her well.
She's blond and has big breasts. That makes her a superstar on this blog. The bigger the boobs the less it matters about her on-camera ability.
DeleteYou never cease to amaze when it comes to getting to the bottom of what's happening in Bay Area media.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch tv.
ReplyDeleteLoren probably has no shot of landing another gig in the Bay Area now. Not after what this blog has put out on her. Not saying it's Rich's fault...it's not. There is no fault here, except maybe with KNTV deciding to air dirty laundry. But the fact is the word is now out that Loren is a problem talent. Whether that's true or not is largely irrelevant at this point...that's the word that is out there. Everyone local reads this blog so now everyone local knows it too.
ReplyDeleteNobody's going to take a chance with someone else's castoffs particularly when they've been "poison pilled" via anonymous reports as has been the case here. KNTV wanted to get it out there that they didn't screw up in dumping her...that they had good reason to cut her loose. So they put the word out. I can see why they'd choose to go the CYA route. Rich published it, as he should have as a responsible blogger. But that has consequences and those consequences are a poisoned Market 6 as far as Loren is concerned.
Few people out there know about this blog. I wouldn't have known, if it were not for TVSpy redirecting me to Rich's previous article two days ago. So, I personally think that she is not "a problem talent." Instead, it was something else entirely. IMHO, she ended up not being what KNTV wanted. I mean it was the decision of both the general manager and the news director. I, for one, am pleased that she is no longer working at KNTV. She was much too perky as one of their meteorologist.
DeleteFinally, you are right about the fact that Loren probably has no shot of landing another gig in the Bay Area now. But again, it is not because of this blog. It's more that she isn't cut out as a talent in this market. Maybe going back to Florida is better for her.
Maybe KNTV put those stories out, so she would not be a competitor here in the Bay Area
DeleteEveryone at PIX know about this blog because management has a "do not talk" order in place. Everyone at KGO knows about this blog. Everyone at KRON knows about this blog. Everyone at KTVU knows about this blog. And by "everyone" I mean the people who make decisions. Those are the ones that matter in this case.
DeleteIt's business, fire her, hire cheaper talent. Smile, done, get used to it.
ReplyDeleteI'll add this. There are ways to survive an inexplicable termination in Market 6. Look at Suzanne Saunders. She was bounced from KGO in 88 not because she wasn't any good or because she was a problem or diva behind the scenes. She got bounced because Harry Fuller wanted to put his pet protegee on the 6 and he could do it because the GM who would have blocked him, Spag, had quit. Everyone knew that so there so getting fired from KGO wasn't a death knell for Saunders and she got picked up by KRON where, once reunited with Pete Wilson a year or so later, KRON flourished and KGO started a revolving door of male news anchors for a majority of the next decade until Ashley showed up.
ReplyDeleteBy contrast, and a more direct parallel to Loren's situation, is Van Amburg. Wildly popular was Van Amburg but when KGO dropped him, nobody picked him up. Why? Because everyone knew that he, much like Giddings, had elbows sharpened to a diamond point. Nobody wanted to take that on.
Whatever Loren's baggage was or wasn't, it is perceived baggage. That's why I can't see her landing anywhere in the Bay Area. The only possibility would be KRON and I consider that option highly unlikely.
KPIX 11pm didn't benefit at all and station had another lousy ratings period. But KTVU was the one who actually had the worst May. KGO was the big winner.
ReplyDeleteCome on!
ReplyDeletegetting fired is "street cred" in broadcasting. The better the back-story, the more hire-able you can be.
Too bad they (KNTV) didn't pick up Erica Kato.
ReplyDeleteShe did overnight traffic last night on KCBS.
DeleteErica Kato was awful. Just awful. Her replacement comes across relaxed, intelligent and professional.
Delete> . . . Score one for the Diane Sawyer card.
ReplyDelete> Yes, I said Diane Sawyer. Still hot and getting hotter.
What card? Regarding that April 24th two-hour interview with Bruce Jenner, Diane Sawyer was pathetic! Why must a woman of that vintage celebrity resort to endless whining?
Throughout the "20/20" parody of journalistic theater, she exemplified pleading, pandering, and prompting. Doubtless once a newscast luminary, this throwback to yesteryear shilled for a questionable personality to plead his case in a failed attempt to resurrect both their personages.
I actually thought KRON would do better. They got so many stories per hour, they beat Stanley Roberts show for all they can ..and Radnich is even standing.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Pam Moore needs a co -anchor. Its her position that hasn't changed.
I have a potential Ask Rich question regarding the Bay Area radio market. Cumulus is planning on starting a nationally syndicated hip-hop oldies format. Don't laugh, it just might work. My question was if any of the FMs here are going to be one of the four to launch the format. To the best of my knowledge those first four are yet unnamed publicly.
ReplyDelete1036 A radio station here already is doing that. They advertise pretty heavy in a tv commercial- in a car, singing dancing (do not attempt this in a moving vehicle) to old Digital Underground.
ReplyDeleteSad part is? California dreamin by Tupac and Dr. Dre is an oldie. Man, it was like yesterday I was saying 'Shake it Kelly shake it". 1995,20 years now.
'California Love'.
Delete'California Dreamin' was by The Momas and The Papas
