Lowell Cohn: 'Jed York is a Coward'; 49ers Owner Tweet Draws Ire of Press-Democrat Writer

Lowell Cohn throws a hardball at Jed York. Whether you agree or disagree is besides the point. It's the content, stupid.

I watched the 49ers game last night after the meal and couldn't believe my eyes. Were these really the 49ers; granted, they were playing the World Champions, but the Seahawks made the 49ers look silly.

And then after the game, Jed and his tweet.

I heard a lot and sensed there might be a hardy reaction from the local press. Nothing was quite as extraordinary was Cohn's scathing review of owner York. That's what I like about Lowell, always willing and able to swing for the fences. Lowell is spectacular here, just my opinion.

  1. I remember the late Yanks' owner George Steinbrenner doing a similar thing years ago when his team lost the deciding game at home in one sided fashion to the Dodgers. he had some of his PR flacks had out a written statement by George which apologized for the Yanks shoddy performance. It was Reggie Jackson's last game as a Yankee and his comment was: "Oh no, no, George..this isn't right!"

York had a right to be upset but he shouldn't have embarrassed his team in public. Those comments should be made behind closed doors. Yes, the Niners deserve criticism but it's never a good sign when you air your dirty laundry in public.

  2. Jed said what we all thought. If he had pulled Jim aside at HQ..whats the point? Besides,I don't see any mention of Jim Harbaugh..Jed said what we all thought- no real effort by the offensive players who played all year as if waiting for the D to be also the O.
Aaron Pero wouldn't say in public "My sports director is too lazy and jaded even to care about the World Series"..and hence KRON suffers.
Nope, only in American business would Jed speaking out be looked down on. In Japan ,that would be the respectful thing to do.
And last- Roman has always stunk. He stunk on the insanity of TWO failed fade passes that Sherman is right to laugh at (costing the team a Super Bowl and a nfc champ.),and Roman has stunk in the red zone his whole 49er career. Roman has been Harbaugh's Achilles heel.

    1. Stan, must EVERYTHING always be about Radnich? Jeez, you're worse than Fox News with Benghazi.

    2. This has nothing to do with Radnich. Stan is deranged and obsessed.

    3. Like how I go that in there? Hey,anybody have a vid of KRONs sports director showing up at any Giants (World Series) games in 2010 and 2012?. How jaded man can you be?.

Harbaugh is leaving. One thing The Kawakami Kid got right is ...Jim is a restless soul..a wanderer. Even going to Peru reflects that as he build homes for the poor.Ok,helped.
I see him going to the Raiders if Mark learned anything from his dad- there really is a Raider way, a 'tude. Jim loves wearing black, not that Broadway costume of gold and maroon. Its a wonder 49er uniforms don't have tassels and ruffled collars....

    4. Stan, you are a jerk off. I was at the corner of 2nd & King in front off AT&T Park before Game 1 of the 2012 World Series. And you know what, Radnich and KRON were set up right next to us. You have no idea of what you're saying. So there Radnich, albeit a bit of a stuffed shirt, was out in the field working.

  3. I disagree with Cohn on one point. I am not surprised by Greg Roman's game plan, as Roman is one of the more overrated OCs in the league.

York is trying to follow the example of other top sports executives who were audaciously "outspoken" when their teams performed poorly. Guys like Ray Kroc, George Steinbrenner, Carroll Rosenbloom, Charlie O, Jed's uncle Eddie, and the not-so-ladylike (and highly idiotic) Marge Schott. He also might be trying to publicly embarrass Jim Harbaugh, who is rumored to be out as Head Coach after this season.

  4. Cohn's tearing apart of York reminded me of the scene in Glengarry Gary Ross in which Pacino tells Spacey among other things: "you f-ING child", "whoever told you you could work with men?", "where did you learn your trade!?". Really worth a look if you've never seen it. I can see Cohn tearing into York like this:

    1. York needs a dress down like the one depicted in the clip. Sure, the child is the CEO but he knows nothing of the game. He's dealing with professional men in the trenches. They don't need to hear this "company man" opine about their performance. It'd be as if a player on the 49ers roster had the gal to Tweet about how the York/Debartolo clan need to run their shopping malls better. He'd be a laughingstock as Jed the child is now...

    2. Great call from one of my favorite films. I'll be picturing York telling Roman to go to lunch all day.

  5. Jed York hides behind his computer on Twitter like a coward and publicly disrespects Jim Harbaugh and his coaching staff.
Be a man and face Harbaugh man to man and tell him he isn't coming back next year to coach.
Here is a exclusive tip for you Rich.
Jim Harbaugh will become the head coach of the Oakland Raiders next February 2015.
He will take his coaching staff with him to Oakland and clean house.
The Raiders and 49ers meet next week at the Oakland Coliseum.
Look for the Raider players to step up and play hard and audition to be on the 2015 Raiders roster and beat the 49ers.
Harbaugh's Raiders have already been picked to win Super Bowl 50 in 2016.
That game will be played in Santa Clara home of the 49ers.
Harbaugh has written off the 49er players as being "soft bellys"
Meaning they do not want to play anymore.
Kapernick spends all day using his head as a Etch a Sketch drawing Nazca Lines in his head instead of working hard at practice.
Michael Crabtree has become Richard Sherman's personal bitch.
As well as the entire 49er offense are his bitches and ho's.
Harbaugh and his coaching staff have seen enough of these soft belly 49ers.
The Harbaugh Raider dynasty begins in February 2015.
    You heard it hear first!

    2. If Harbaugh is gone (which he may not be), he has a far greater chance of being the head coach of the University of Michigan than that of the Raiders.

  7. Following a blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints two years ago Oakland Raiders majority owner Mark Davis did the same thing. Guess this is the norm these days, no biggie.

  8. Thanks. Lowell Cohn said it beautifully. The Yorks can believe in their son all they want, like any proud parents would; just cause Jed used to beat his grandpa in card games and received a stellar education means nothing when running a team. He also learned his values from multimillionaire folks who clip coupons and think cost cutting means limiting the in-house bottled water...why Eddie D? why?

  9. Of course Lieberman like's Lowell Cohen, they are both the same.

They both make dramatic, emotional accusations to draw attention to themselves and do so as if there's something heroic about it.

  10. Good for Jed York. People are paying "Good Money" for entertaiment and the 49ers are stinking the place up. As the owner, the apology was appropriate.

    1. Agree, and more people probably see it and get it faster with twitter than if he said he in front of the microphones and it was carried late on the 11 o'clock news.

  11. I don't often agree with Cohn, but I am with him on this one. I have no problem with York's remarks, but he should have been man enough to make them in front of the cameras instead of tweeting them.

  12. Meanwhile, the quarterback whose year-to-year improvement has stalled (I would suggest he has regressed) and the press wants to rip the OC for calling plays that a semi-competent QB could run. Kaepernick has thrown less than ten receivers open this season. He throws it where they are - he's supposed to throw it where they're going. Harbaugh staked his reputation (and got a wide berth after the postseason appearances) and will leave the QB behind and move on to his next conquest.

    3. Roman is horseshit, and it looks like he and Harbaugh are also in a regressive mode. Kaepernick has his deficiencies, but even Joe Montana and Steve Young would be harried and running for their lives playing behind that O Line. I wish I had a nickle for every time Roman's "schemes" were unprepared for stunts, and middle gap and blindside blitzes.

    4. Kaeperthug is much more of a problem than Roman, no question. He needs to go more than Hargaugh or Roman does. What a waste of space that smug thug is.

  15. Yes I too am a fan of Lowell Cohn fan ( a far cry from the early 80's).
Although I am not sure I would have used the same verbage.
You got to give Lowell credit for speaking his mind and not being shy about it.

  16. After the game I was watching ESPN, and Teddy Bruschi said that Jed York should not have taken to Twitter to Tweet an apology to the fans. Teddy said that he could not imagine Robert Kraft, the owner of the N.E. Pats doing such a thing.

Teddy went on to say that in matters like this, it should be handled in house, and not aired before the Fans, Media, and the Team. I certainly agree with Teddy Bruschi. If anything the York Ownership has proven to be nothing but dysfunctional, & abysmal stewards of this historical franchise. First & foremost by removing the team from the City in which its history, legacy, and tradition was born in... So yes I also agree with Lowell, he was #SpotOn...

  17. York should apologize for signing Kaepernick to that big-money contract extension.

  18. It's okay for players and coaches to say that the performance was unacceptable, so what is the problem with the CEO saying so???

That's what happens in the business world every day when employees screw up.

    Jeez, get over it.

  20. If you want to talk coward- somebody on his blog called "415" said that i posted HERE,that"Lowell Cohn agrees with everything I say"...and of course I hadn't said that, posted that. Cohn, without even bothering to read your blog..then said "If Stan says that he's dead wrong". All he had to do was read your blog that day. I told him what it was- he WOULDN'T POST THE TRUTH.
He left it like that. I did ask several times,no answer...he was a coward. Lowell wrong and Stan was right? he couldn't handle that..yeah,who's a coward?.
Whats ironic? Most of the time he DID agree with me.

  21. The SF Chronicle kicked Lowell Cohn to the curb, long ago, for a reason...he was a one trick pony...and the pony got old and tired. I find it hilarious that Cohn still thinks he matters...he's a pathetic has been writing for a dying small town rag no one reads anymore...next stop for Cohn...Eureka Times Standard

  22. Give me a break! Cohn is a little hyper-sensitive, but he's one of the better writers out there and picks his spots to make critical remarks. He's thoughtful and asks smart questions in the news conferences and has been doing this for a long time. He was sent packing by the Chron because he had a personality conflict with the sports editor who was an idiot. Look at who is one of the lead columnists on the Chron today...Anne Killion for cripes sake. Need I say more?
