Tears 4 Fears had many hits back in the 90's. Most of their songs were very well written and professionally produced. I think that approach ; glossy, stylized but simple enough to remember, would sell today. It's very expensive to take risks nowadays, hence, you get formulaic songs by people like Katy Perry. Many of her top selling songs have a proundly clumsy, heavy-handed feel to them. Maybe that's what sells, the clumsy and the heavy-handed rip-offs from ear worms, hooks in loud repitition and lullibies.
