Saturday News and Notes; KPIX And Its CW Newscast Youthful Endeavor; Israel-Gaza on KSCO Radio 'Saturday Special'

Some of you take the position of congratulating KPIX for trying something new with regard to their 10 PM "Night Beat" newscast on the CW channel, (KBCW).

Well, that's a reasonable position but just what is it that's new or bold or different?

We're to be enthralled that KPIX is marginalizing a newscast to attract a younger demo? That's supposed to be innovative? Please.

Think about it.

A thirty-minute newscast littered with silly-sallies --complete with Twitter and Facebook trends and other absurdities. How about 30 minutes of a simple, straight-forward, splashy, non-artificial program with sharper and quicker stories. No false bravado, no two-minute drills, just an attempt at a nifty newscast--how great that would be.

But no, in an attempt to cater to the lowest common denominator; the youthful Neanderthals most of whom are not even watching TV, let alone a local TV newscast, PIX has spent wads of cash on going after an impossible audience. For this, we're supposed to congratulate them?

Concentrate on bettering the product. Write better. Do some split-screen interviews. They don't have to be PBS-coated nor complex. Even the general public is bored with that and most of them also are not local TV news viewers. PIX has, in effect, trivialized its own product, its news service to the general SF public: Hey you, smart-phone kids, watch us!! Listen, we have something for you! As if to say their other shows are for the boring old masses. I'm generalizing but you get my drift.

Classy, PIX.

*From 10 AM to Noon, today, Saturday, on KSCO, we'll talk about the Gaza--Israeli conflict. Should be a doozy. Hope you tune in live but if you can't, it'll be repeated tonight at 10 PM and later, on a podcast.

  1. Why is it that Rich Lieberman automatically hate, and I do mean hate, each and everything that any local TV news organizations does?

  2. With all due respect, what are Rich Lieberman's credentials for discussing the Gaza--Israeli conflict?

Does he have any expertise in history or world affairs? What are his qualifications?

    1. Mr. Lieberman apparently went to college and worked in the broadcasting industry. He doesn't appear to be terribly intellectual nor knowledgeable about world affairs.

Does he possess any particular expertise on the subject the Gaza--Israeli conflict? It's a fair question to ask. Why can't he answer it?

    2. Before you cast any good or bad reviews why don't you listen to the show, (it's repeated tonight at 10), or on the podcast.

As for my "credentials", I read a lot. A lot. And while I was at SFSU, I took an interest to Middle East studies.

My knowledge of the subject matter is more than you think and I have a firm opinion of the affair. If that's not your requirement then I'd suggest you not listen to the show.

      Simple enough.

    3. Mr. Lieberman exchanges emails with Jack Rothman and Mickey Weiner so in his mind that makes him an "expert" on Middle East affairs. Listening now to the podcast I can't stop laughing at Lieberman's sophomoric analysis. Come on man. Stick to becoming a Herb Caen retread. You're such a pussy that you won't publish this Mr. fedora guy. You're not even worth debating. Christine Craft would round circles around your fat ass.

  4. Who needs credentials to discuss any topic? What are your credentials to discuss his credentials?

    See how that was?

    1. Q. Who needs credentials to discuss any topic?
      A. Apparently not Rich Lieberman.

SW, I suppose you don't care whether someone discussing a complicated subject happens to know what he or she is talking. If you don't consider the source of what you hear it's impossible to evaluate its significance.

  5. Don't laugh. This newscast could be how news is presented in the future. The target demo is very short in the area of attention. They take great interest in social media.

  6. Probably trivial, and definitely off-topic (but at least posted on the right day!!): I just tuned in to KGO TV news, since I've been out of touch all day - and can I just say that both Francis Dinglasen (sp? - the weather chick) and I'maditz *** need to seriously have one of the make-up people at the station do their HAIR ****! It's so gross and unattractive....looks oily, and kind of separates around their faces. ICKY! OK - I feel better now...........

    1. Hey buddy KGO doesn't have make-up people any more!! If you actually worked at KGO TV you'd know that.

  7. go back to real news and ditch Ken and Liz. They are lazy and don't really care about anything other than themselves. Just telling it like it is. VDLC is the future of that station. And everyone there knows it. Liz needs to go to weekends or mornings in Bakersfield. Just telling it like it is.

  8. Lieberman complaining about KPIX catering to "the lowest common denominator." That's hysterical coming from a guy who loads his blog with provocative images of local female broadcasters.

  9. Oh and one more *** KGO *** thing: This (Texas??) person named "Diedre", or "Ditra" Miles should STOP doing any weather at all!!! She just finished saying "it's really going to cool down quite a bit in the next few days" (i.e., Sunday and Monday). She does this all the time - NO IT ISN'T, dumb broad!! The weather forecast for this area is 90 - 91 on both Sunday and Monday - get a clue!! Many people depend on these little weather updates to plan their activities. Get it right or shut up.

  10. I have recorded it every night so far, so that I can give it a chance. And every night it has made me want to vomit. Seriously, this is truly a reprehensible effort. Cut if off. Now. Please.

  11. I was curious so I flipped on the 10 tonight. Guess the Night Beat is only a Monday-Friday thing. No crazy graphics. No Twitter or Facebook stuff.

Add no sports and I might take a listen. Online. And get rid of Frank "I have a BLACK DAUGHTER" whatever his name is. No one cares. I used to like him till I read his fb page and he was the personification of Ted Baxter.

    1. Except a "nifty newscast" would require skill, hard work, and professionalism instead of gimmicks.

  14. At this point, the Hamas / Israel fight has all the morality of the mob guys in Goodfella's whacking Tommy in revenge for his killing of the shoe-shine joke guy. Sure, you're supposed to sympathize with Tommy's side, but only because his is the only one you've been shown, but in reality everyone in the entire movie is scum.
