I've always like this song. It came out in 1966, a year before The Doors hit it big with Light My Fire. Another good lovin spoonful was, i think, Do You Believe in Magic? Very melodious, very pleasant.
Is this one of the band's that contributed to a generation of whites hating themselves for being white that ultimately led to the fucked up country we have today?
I don't think so. You may be overthinking this easy listening music. There was no alterior motive. That cynical nature was best seen in groups like The Tubes, with their biggest hit "White Punks On Dope". Ask anybody who listened to pop music during the 70's. Groups like The Tubes and B52's talked about the schism forming and the guilt-merchants blathering, but never took themselves that seriously. Their motto; shut up and sing, dammit!
