KPIX/KBCW Set To Launch New 10 PM Show Monday; De La Cruz To Anchor Solo; New Newscast Tries To Attract Younger Demo

After a months-long delay, KPIX is set to launch its much-anticipated 10 PM newscast this Monday on its sister CW station, KBCW. It will be titled: Bay Area Night Beat. (Creative).

Finally.

We've been waiting.

The show, as we noted here, will focus on attracting a younger audience. Therefore, expect a lot of what's trending on Twitter and Facebook updates.

PIX knows it can't beat KTVU with its ratings-leading, "10 O'clock News", but that's not its intention.

PIX is attempting to attract a percentage of viewers; younger, (A18-49), mobile; those that have smartphones and live by the web.

The irony: those in that segment are likely not watching local TV News.

The show will be anchored by Veronica De La Cruz.

  1. We watch the current show every night because we like Ken Bastida and as a whole they do a nice job for 30 mins. But if the new show is what you describe then we'll most likely move back to channel 2. If it ain't broke why fix it ??

    1. I went to the CW broadcast not because it's so good, but due to Ch2's being too awful. I'll make the same switch back to 2, begrudgingly, and hope for drastic improvements (less/no Julie) under the new ownership.

    2. I MISS ken Basitida and elizabeth cook!!
and i really feel the new format is making everyone uncomfortable
the news guy and the sports guy seem put out and put off by
having to act celebrity bantor with cruz
the whole thing awkard and unprofessional
and I dont care the split screen
and i dont like how elizabeth cook got pushed to the side
and it also seems like cruz is everyones boss
      the whole vibe stinks
im gonna have to go channel 2
      it feels like real news'
      so dissappionted

  3. Also, I agree with Rich. If KPIX thinks that 18 to 35 year old kids are watching the 10 o'clock news they are in for a big shock. That group doesn't watch any TV news program

Looks like we found the 65 and over crowd

  4. She's terrible. I don't know what the hype is about. I DO NOT like when anchors have to insert their 2 cents and she did it about universal health care on her 3rd night. Pfft!

  5. I was talking to a group of early 30 some things this week at work and commented on the problem at the border with young kids coming across and no one knew what I was talking about. I said "Doesn't anyone ever watch or listen to the news and they all said "no in my car I listen to music and at home I have Hulu on my TV!" I thought it was kind of sad. I realize when I talk to them they have a totally different view of the world or maybe lack of would be more accurate?

  6. 18-35 yr old demo gets their "hard news" from Jon Stewart, Colbert, Maher and now, yet another SHOUTING English comedian and NOT local 'casts.

  7. I caught VDLC the other day and wasn't too impressed.

  8. VDLC is just another misstep at KPIX....Elizabeth Cook is better than her and she's better looking.....I don't get it....well yes I do....TV execs just have to continually tinker with personalities....If it ain't broke don't f---k with it

    1. She correct Bastida with her Lady Gaga knowledge last night. We have found the area she can contribute off script.

    2. Watching Liz read the news is like watching a monkey hump a football.

  10. I've got a friend who works in IT at KPIX. The problem has nothing to do with Veronica or ad sales. They were ready to go about two weeks ago when during a test broadcast a defect in the set was detected. One that could have been potentially dangerous. As De La Cruz was reading local headlines the pole she was dancing from became loose and she toppled from the stage. At first it was thought that she sprained her ankle as she hobbled off the set in her twelve inch clear Lucite heels.

  11. These PDs and GMs just don't get it. No matter how many 'ears' or 'eyeballs' are listening or watching their shows, only a small percentage of them are the 'young demographic,' that they always seem to covet.

They use that excuse of pandering to the 'young demographic,' to constantly dumb down or make more irritating the programs that they promote. I guess they believe that most young people today are brainless twits. The fact is most young people today aren't watching or listening to TV or radio much anymore.

Most of them are out and about, and when they are involved with any media, they're usually texting, tweeting, Facbooking, posting photos or taking a quick peek at their favorite web sites. The folks who watch regular TV and still listen to the radio are mostly in the 35 year old and plus ages...not those under age 35. Not very many anyway!

  13. bad move you don't fix what isn't broke. maybe Chanel 2 will improve a little !!

  14. this is the worst show i have ever seen. what were they thinking? also going to chanel 2 like rest that enjotyed it the way it was.

  15. its interesting to me that staff won't consider the faithful who did (past 10's) watch !

  16. Horrible, horrible, try reporting on the news with details in the reports rather than pandering to a demographic who doesn't watch this.

  17. i can see that they are trying to pep things up and cruz is peppy..
but the up close split screen makes me see red
and i feel like the new format is throwing all the other journalist
sports and weather off... they seemed so much happier and easier to watch before

its selfish to throw a wrench and change everyting on the original crew.. and i dont
    like it

ken bastista is a darling .. like a caring brother.. cruz is a poor replacment

  18. Neither my husband or I like the new show. We hate all of the "Tweets". Bring back Ken and Elizabeth.
