  1. Why do you refuse to ban anonymous posting? Is it because you're scared of real conversations on topics, and the limited number of posters?

Post-May 10 "Post Mortem," what is trajectory of Barbara's legal discussions and career path?

    1. I'd have to ask Barbara --which I have and she's not talking...maybe she signed a confidentiality agreement which makes her talking to a lawyer sound interesting.

  3. If 95.7 the Game does have better ratings in the next months what are chances of them attaching themselves to a second station(like 1050 for KNBR) in order to have a better frequency(reach)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. There was talk they would move up the dial to a more stronger Entercom station but that would interfere with that station's format which has better ratings than The Game.

The Game will remain at 95.7 FM but clearly their lousy signal is as much an issue with their numbers in addition to some of their shows.

  4. Jim Barnett said that he will broadcasting homes games, any word on leading candidates for the warrior road games?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, not now although I'm sure the Warriors have an idea of who they'd want.

I wouldn't be surprised if Barnett ended up staying put and doing road games --he's still at the top of his game, for one, and secondly, the amount of public and media support for his work have made a lot of waves in the Warriors broadcast dept.

  5. I do not follow sports other than pro football, and that is usually all about pools. My eyes glaze over or I change the channel to check shopping during sports on the nightly news. The radio spots on sports are just background noise to me. But who is the man that does the sports spots on KGO on Saturday a.m. Is he on another station reporting sports? I at least listen to him... funny! Thanks - now ready for bashing for my ignorance. lc

    1. You're not ignorant. I'm not into the ballet but I like Opera--it's all an acquired taste.

To answer your question, the AM Sports guy on KGO Saturday is Larry Olson. He thinks he's funnier than he is --a lot of his "jokes" are contrived and forced.

  6. I alwayes hear about radio salaries being slashed, but nobody ever gives specifics.

How much do people like Ronn Owens, Pat Thurston and Karel make .. and what did they get before?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Owens was making 7 figures from 2006 up to his current contract for which he gets paid roughly $475K a year...Pat Thurston, I don't know...Karel gets $200 a show plus medical benefits from the union.

  7. What's your take on John Hamilton on KGO...he's a legend, but over the last few weeks he's been sounding a little off...I don't know how many times he's told the audience his name is Keoke in Hawaiian since he returned from his junket to the islands. Does anyone think the segment where people who aren't able to find good airfares online themselves call in for fares from the travel agent guest is good radio? (I want to fly to NYC the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and come back the Sunday after...why are the fares so high?) And, is his show flat out brokered?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the fact the show is on a Sunday morning --early--speaks for itself.

Hamilton's show, I'm sure, is either brokered or a trade-out--as for the content of the show, travel questions are harmless --some of the information is useful enough--I don't think they're trying to reinvent the wheel with this program.

I don't listen to him much lately to offer an opinion on his mental well-being, I assume he's OK.

  8. If A's fans are staying away from games because they don't like the Coliseum, why don't they at least listen on radio or watch on TV, their ratings are horrible?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The Giants are the top banana in this market and have KNBR, 50K-watts and ample shows/PR to build around.

The A's ratings aren't "horrible"--they have issues like a weak-signal/FM flagship radio station; an uncertain stadium situation made worse by a terrible owner...if the A's had a new stadium and more available radio station I think they'd have better ratings.

If they continue to win, some of these things will take care of themselves.

      Delete
    2. There is a reason they are on CSN-California. Has nothing to do with a weak signal.

      Delete
    3. It may be CSN-California .... for me, I live on the Monterey Peninsula and work in Cupertino ... A's game on the radio start to degrade in Gilroy .. I end up using MLB @ Bat for the audio feed. It's frustrating because even that dumps out a couple times at the county line. It's frustrating as all hell. I read a truism a long time ago that the biggest difference between the A's and the Giants: KNBR.

I'm not a boy toy but I did go out on a date with Joey Heatherton long time ago.

  13. Have you ever thought about doing a post on local celebrities and their real versus stage names? Spencer Hughes, Ronn Owens, Kate Scott, etc. It would be fun for us to see the real names behind the personalities. Sometimes the people commenting have quite a bit of knowledge, too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If they were true celebrities and/or movie stars it would be writing about--as it is there's no interest because it's a common practice used by various people.

I needle a few people on it but the more I think of it really doesn't matter much.

      Delete
    2. They don't use their real names, in many cases, because they don't want stalkers. Believe it or not, stalkers are a real problem with media in the Bay Area. Most of the stalkers are mentally-ill and will often try and pass themselves off as a relative of the stalked person. It can get rather scary and restraining orders are not uncommon.

      Delete
    3. And then some of us use fake names because our real names are, say, Polish or have other Eastern European roots and they're just too bloody long to frequently pronounce correctly. For me, anyway, that's the primary reason. Stalkers are secondary.

  14. Rich, what are your thoughts on the new Cumulus country station at 92.3 FM? Do you think it will do any real damage to KRTY, or will Cumulus manage to screw this one up too?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I'm not a big country music fan so I really don't care.

As for Cumulus screwing up, of course, they've already done plenty of that, check their stock price and all the radio stations across the country they fucked up.

  17. How long can the Game actually last with no ratings ? Does the station have deep pockets ? The morning show is horrible but so is KNBR morning show. I actually like Bruce in the afternoon more then Tolbert and Ratto.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Entercom has deep enough pockets and they've said their in it for the long term...as in sports/FM in SF. If they can make incremental increases and capture more market share and demos, then as long as they're making money, they'll survive.

On the other hand if they lose the A's, (contract is up after '14), that could thwart their long term game plan, (no pun intended).

Be a little more selective on the posts and try to keep the "creepy" stuff minimal --please, for me. C'mon, even Lowell would say that.

    2. I don't know why you would. You've never ever over the years have had to retract what I said,or accused me of deceiving anybody. Creepy? are you kidding me?..I'm not on KRON with my legs wide open and hands down there so the female anchor can stare..all on live TV.
I don't lie. I'm the Bull of truth (so to speak) in the China shop of lies..

btw, Lowell today said of one of my posts..he agreed. I thought that was nice.
On my blog? My filter is set to "off and super off".

    4. "You've never ever over the years have had to retract what I said,or accused me of deceiving anybody."

Why would Lieberman have to retract something Stan said? Lieberman doesn't stand behind people's idiotic comments. He publishes comments, he doesn't suggest that the content is accurate. Clearly most of the claims Stan makes are unbelievable nonsense.

Aren't you preparing to give your readers a lenghty & measured dissertation of Kate Scott's debut on NBC Bay Area?

And is there any truth to the rumor that you're going to buy the LA Clippers & move them to Daly City?

    We gotta know.

    1. Maybe you confused me with someone else--I wasn't at the Sutter Station sorry to disappoint.

  28. What's your take of the situation with Family Radio now that Harold Camping is out of the picture and they need cash? I personally felt that CBS screwed up royally when they sold KFRC to Camping. If they wanted KOVR 13 that badly, they could have sold a couple of their FM's in Sacramento and no one would have noticed. But not a Bay Area institution. I think that 610AM will undergo a significant change within the next year. Hopefully returning to their Classic Hits roots. And please...No Talk Shows.

  29. Back in the 1990s, a guy named Chris Clarke (I think?) use to do the late night shift on weekends at KGO before John Rothmann replaced him. Any world on what happened to him? I know he was working in the film industry.

And what is Rothmann up to? Miss his shows.

Also some other former Bay Area people I'm curious about what they are doing: Shawn Nix, Emerald Yeh, Elaine Corral, Susan Blake, and the former host of Live105's Hybernia Beach who's name escapes me right now.

    Thanks, Rich!

    1. Shawn Nix was superstar material. I remember she lived in Sonoma, wrote and was married to an older man. Looked forward to her show when she filled in for Owens back when he was still engaging.

      Delete
    2. That's quite a list...I'll be short, for now.

Chris Clarke was fired, British guy, haven't a clue what he's up to; John Rothmann is alive and well doing fill-in on the Clear Channel station in town and writing books.

      Delete
    3. Rich, As someone previously mentioned, John Rothman sat in for Gil Gross @ KKSF-910-AM last Monday, Memorial Day. It really was a terrific four-hours of intelligent, quality, listening pleasure...just like old KGO, calls from both the Left and the Right.
If interested in Rothmann replay, check it out here:
      http://www.talk910.com/media/podcast-gil-gross-gil_gross/

Still think a program like: "Rothmann and Sons" could make an interesting show. Interviewing his sons on what's hot in their world, what the kids today are talking about and dreaming of.

  32. As for Susan Blake: http://www.susanblakemedia.com/

She has been a fill-in on NBC-11, but haven't seen her do anything locally in a few years. Wonderful talent. Doesn't need to put up with the nonsense in the business.

    ReplyDelete
  33. RIch, is it me, or is Bay Area radio, or radio in general, getting worse?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Are you new to this blog? Radio has steadily gotten worse since Jack Swanson and Mickey Luckoff left KGO and KSFO, for awhile 910 looked like they might fill some of that void, but they decided to go cheap, A&G for 4 hours, then Frosty talking to himself for 3 hours, then after Randi Rhoades left, they put on 2 guys for 2 hours to talk to eachother, and then Gil Gross for 4 hours talking to experts, the weatherman, the traffic person, the newsperson and on Fridays, God help us, to his wife, but never ever, ever talking to us the listeners, or asking anyone to call in. KSFO fired an intelligent, professional woman (who I rarely agreed with) with tons of broadcasting experience, and instead put on an intellectual lightweight, on Memorial Day, he was talking about the dirtiest beaches in Northern California, well it might have been the day before, I don't think he was on Memorial Day, but Barbara would have talked about the significance of Memorial Day, as thank God, did John Rothman who was filling in for Gil, again thank God. I mean that loosely since I'm not religious at all. But, yes Bay Area radio and/or radio in general is getting worse, almost by the month.
