Super Sunday Ask Rich; Questions And Answers; Bay Area Media

OK, before you load up on the nachos and wings, fire away. I'm sure there's a lot to ask, and as always, I'll give you my best shot.

Remember, be nice. Or at least if you're going to be cranky, make some sense.

Oh, and whatever it's worth, Seattle 27, Denver, 26.

    1. He threw his fellow hosts, not to mention his legacy, under the bus. That's all.

    2. I can remember he was a hairy ass dude (lots of backhair as he used to do his nighttime show shirtless) In this day of man scaping, has the hairy dude shaved that shit off yet?

  2. Question: Do you really, honestly, in your heart of hearts, think that you're NOT a moron?

  3. Rich, wasn't Leigh Glaser married to a fellow who also worked at ABC7? Black guy, had Bell's Palsy? What was his name, if so?

  4. Brian Sussman seemed to be a sane chap when he was a weatherman. Did he manufacture a new fake image to fit in at KSFO ? Do you like Suss ?

    1. I like Brian personally but I don't like his show. I respect his right to have become a GOP minion but his program histrionics and predictable ranting is a turn-off.

    2. "Brian Sussman seemed to be a sane chap..." highlights what I'm talking about when I get annoyed at people (including Rich) who talk about anchors and reporters they've only seen on air as if they know them, talking about how "intelligent" they are or what "nice" people they are. Here's a clue: when they're on the air they're acting, just like Hollywood people. You don't know what Ben Affleck is like either, even if you see him being an aw-gosh guy on The Tonight Show. I've seen anchors who despite each other be chummy on camera and then, as soon as they're told they're "clear" (the show's off the air), part company, go back to their desks separately, and never exchange another civil word...until the next show. I've seen reporters who look and act all "Cronkitey" not have a clue about what they're covering, and relying on someone at the desk to feed them info. Remember that scene in Broadcast News where William Hurt has to do a big story and Albert Brooks is whispering in his ear? It's not that far-fetched at all.

Believe me, you don't "know" these people. You don't know their politics, their intelligence, their niceness, their anything. If you think you do, it just means they're doing their jobs well.

(P.S.: The only exception may be Darya Folsom, who pretty much acts the same on air as off. She'd never think to change herself, as she's convinced the world is in love with her every stupid thought.)

    3. I've gotten to know the manager at the gym where I work out fairly well, and he sees Joe Fonzi come in on a semi regular basis. I understand he's a nice enough guy but a rather arrogant snot, talking about how he left the black Ferrari at home today. It's nice that he's doing well but damn...

  5. I only want for Dave Clark and Torrie Campbell to stop using bad grammar and stop mispronouncing simple words such as "reportedly". Where is their accountability?

    1. I assume their boss, Lee Rosenthal ..but they're so out of control over there, who knows these days.

    2. Replace the two and the problem would disappear. I'd like to see their replacement for personality reasons.

I recall the reporting of a BART shut down due to an electrical problem, an electrical short was the trouble but Holmes refereed to it as a "shortage". So blond.

My theory on why we never see their backs...like the old talking dolls of the 60's and 70's, they have pull strings w/ rings on their backs.

  6. Rich, you promised lots of news about the big meeting at KGO last week and then nothing happened. Is there a reason you always promise more than you can deliver?

  8. Opposite ends of the spectrum : The Bat Kid with warm fuzzies...and then the SF firefighter who is suing the force for revealing she was one of two who ran over the girl on the runway. No shame in running her over,no punishment either. Now,she wants to be paid bonus money for it!
    Uh,you agree?

    1. Stan, it's too early in the morning and I haven't had coffee yet so I'll defer.

The girl on the runway thing still baffles me--I would hope we'd get the truth eventually.

  12. Hey Rich -- it doesn't look like KTVU uses Pam Cook to her full talent. Instead using a pretty talentless Tori. Why is this? How old is Pam? Have you heard from everyone's favorite Lawyer lately? He was one of the few reasons why listened to KGO -- Len Tillem rocks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For some reason(s) Tori is beloved. Plus before the **issue** took place, she re-upped...I like Pam Cook but she's just OK, don't know her age...as for Tillem, I think he's trying to get back in radio but he's quite content with his "loyah" business as is.

    2. What are some of the reasons Tori is beloved for? I haven't seen any positive comments about her, though before the major screw up on the names of those killed in the Asiana crash, don't know of anything negative folks could pin on her. Other than she's white, which seems to be held against you these days in some people's minds...

  13. In regards to KGO....

Is it possible they just free up some hours and syndicate national shows like a Dennis Miller or "name"?

    1. Doubt that but on the weekend it sure beats the hell out of what they currently stock, with the exception of Finney and Thurston.

    2. Cumulus has no one in their national stable to put on KGO that would make a difference. They have two talk stations to present (for the moment) and the pickin's are pretty slim from their national lineup. They need local, egional or indepenendent national talkers (like Hughes, Karel and Langan) or they have virtually nothing else escept Thurston. They don't give Craft enough time, Weintraub is a loose cannon and Bloomsberg Radio is a wast of transmitter time. They have so little to choose from to make KGO work. Listening to the Cal Bears win last night was refreshing.

      Delete
    3. Craft and Weintraub preferable to anyone KGO has right now. Karel, hughes and especially Langan are just awful. Hughes a retread, Langan clueless, and karel just has nothing left. Craft is edgy and has an opinion. Not sure what to think of Weintraub because he's just all over the place. There's no one national to put on KGO in the cumulus family. Geraldo anyone?

    4. They could hire new hosts, or rehire some of the former hosts from KGO, like John Rothmann, maybe the could do one of two syndicated shows. I miss Bill Press since 960 went all right wing. I believe he still has a show and although he is in DC, he knows California politics, since he has a home in Fairfax. There are other talents out there Stacy Taylor, more of Christine. I'm warming up to Matt Rey, he is not bad.

  14. What are your political views, Rich. Left? Right? Center? You come across as a liberal Dem with some of the comments you make but then you'll surprise me and make me think you're more of a conservative.

    1. Isn't Rich a communist?

    2. I don't have any concrete political leaning...On some issues, I'm quite liberal but in other areas, I tend to be conservative. Tend to be liberal on social issues and slightly conservative elsewhere. I don't like labels but I'm probably more center left.

  17. Rich, I have an unusual question:
Why are Jewish People so darn Smart and Successful in life?

Is it the up-bringing? Do parents stress good grades and success more?
Look at Radio, the best and most successful are all Jewish!
This is meant as a positive question and I know it's a generalization.
    But, what's the Secret?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I have no clue how to answer that.

      Delete
    2. Rich, you can't answer that? They're God's chosen people...and THEN it's upbringing and expectation and a tradition of success. It's also that Jews are somewhat clannish, taking care of other Jews. Part of it is about their money but you can't always say that because some of them succeed without it.

There's also a study out there ranking ethnic groups by IQ. First, Ashkenazi Jews: (Einstein, guys who worked on the Manhattan Project). Second, East Asians (Japanese highly represented here). Third, northern Europeans. (My wife and I, people I know from the systems world). The rest I can't remember, guy who told me about that retired as a statistician from Livermore labs and doesn't live out here anymore.

"Why do I do it?" Hopefully to serve a purpose and give the Bay Area people who are interested in local media a place to read about the subject matter that is largely ignored in the local press.

  19. Rich: Did you catch Radnich and Krueger at Fanfest? Raddy tried to get Flannery to say something BAD about almost anybody and when Tim stuck to his first sentences about any subject that R&K brought up - Radnich seemed miffed?

    Thoughts?

    2. Then, you wake up from your dream and realize that 50% of the big-4 TV networks in the Bay Area are still not located in San Francisco. Cox is not going to let FOX go from KTVU without a fight, and Comcast has invested too heavily in San Jose to sell KNTV off and go non-O&O in the 6th biggest national TV market (and their 3rd largest cable market).

  24. Rich, what's your take on the 'young, fresh talent' that seems to be coming into Comcast sportsnet bay area non-stop? Anchors and reporters come and go at that place with alarming regularity. Jamie Sire is gone, so is Damon Andrews, Chuck Fisher, Matt Morrison and Dave Benz. Who are these young girls they've brought in and what is their background? They look as if they just got out of college. Don't young people have to have some experience working in the smaller towns before they come to someplace like the Bay Area? Are they doing this just because they're cheap? And finally, outside of the Giants and Warriors post game shows, does anybody really watch their nightly sports reports and things such as Brodie Brazil's specials on the Sharks? What's with all the hoopla and promotion over Brodie Brazil anyway? He's a nice young guy who does a decent job, but they try to make him and those guys Fareed and Feldman look as if they're the biggest things in bay area sports media. I'd prefer watching Vernon and Dennis over at KPIX, or Radnich, Shu, Beal, Fonzi, Ibanez, and even Fred Ingles (his anchor style is very annoying however), than any of those smarmy clowns on Comcast. What's your take Rich?
