DAMON BRUCE: SUSPENDED.
KNBR 1050 talk host, Damon Bruce has been suspended indefinitely by the station according to a reliable source.
Bruce , who co-hosts the 49ers pre-game radio show on KNBR was not on the air Sunday morning. He said some unflattering things about women in case you were on another planet.
UPDATE: 1: 59 PM PT:
A source close to the situation said the suspension went down yesterday. Both KNBR and Cumulus execs were said to have met privately and decided it would be inappropriate for Bruce to work the 49ers pre-game show given the nature of Bruce's anti-women rant last week.
The source said Bruce was "crushed"--the suspension is supposed to be two days but KNBR and Cumulus are said to be weighing in on public reaction. "You never know", said the source.
I'm also hearing that some 49ers officials were also "concerned" over the possibility of Bruce
appearing on the show this morning.
UPDATE 2: --4: 58 PM PT:
I've just been told by another source close to the situation that Bruce might be fired.
Supposedly, KNBR and Cumulus management will reportedly meet Monday to weigh the considerably negative reaction from Bruce's rant last week. What may have accelerated his fate was intense outrage from women who have flooded the e-mail box of Opps Mgr, Lee Hammer.
Moreover, says the source, KNBR has been inundated with complaints from a few advertisers. When that happens, bad things happen.
We'll know more Monday.
*Developing story...
I've heard worse on KNBR. I really have. I've heard a host announce he drove to work "high on Vicodon". I've heard " I enjoy that R.Kelly's music even if he is a child molester" And he did say molester. I even heard another host call The President of the United States " A sissy, who should be disobeyed" And that host was a former Marine- he claims. Nobody suspended.
ReplyDeleteObvious to me its more then Damon Bruce's latest misfire.
Good riddance. I hope it's forever.
ReplyDeleteDamon's 9 minute rant didn't sound that bad. Not worthy of a suspension.
ReplyDeletePremeditation, it's a funny thing.
DeleteDon, isn't what most of what Damon said, right or wrong, basically true? In essence, the locker room is a mans world.
Delete@Tom I totally agree, name one women reporter you couldn't do w/out.
DeleteI can't press the mute button fast enough when AMY G comes on.
"GEE Madison, did you like it when Brandon hit that HR to win the game? Are you BFF's?" she has never asked a question that couldn't be answered w/"no sh$t" and it is all about feeling good. she in a nutshell is what DB is talking about. the soccer mom-ification of sports
Excellent point Tom.
DeleteHere in the Bay Area freedom of speech is only good as long as I agree with your view point.
Go away, and count to ten. Then stay there.
ReplyDeletesays the person who has never listened to him.
DeleteLove seeing Damon eaten alive by the very progressives he is always sucking up to. I hope they fire him.
ReplyDeleteConsidering it was Bruce who turned on them, what do you expect?
DeleteAnd I always thought Damon Bruce looked and sounded a whole lot like shock jock Mancow. Remember Mancow when he was here in the bay area?. Fired for getting a shave on the bay bridge at rush hour.
History repeats. Sort of.
LOL... Conservatives are always so bitter. If Damon Bruce is fired it's because he's an idiot. I'm a proud progressive and think he's horrible. Having said that, I don't think a person should be fired for having an opinion that differs from mine. But if KNBR does fire the guy, Bruce will have to look in the mirror. He gets paid to (supposedly) think and talk... He just kept digging into the stupidity hole.
DeleteProud progressive...another sign of delusion
DeleteDoes this mean Damon won't be spotted picking up young chicks on the Marina District tonight?
ReplyDeleteOh no! Now we won't hear any more contrived garbage from him about "sundress conditions" anymore?? Also in response to Stan, Mancow actually did some innovative stuff whereas Damon Bruce is just a cheap, Jim Rome imitation (not that Jim Rome is someone to emulate either.)
ReplyDeleteThat trip to the Dan Sileo School of Broadcasting finally paying off.
ReplyDeletePersonally while he shouldn't have done it on air, I agree a locker room shouldn't be invaded by the press male and female. Make a media room available and do them in that set aside room. I also believe that with Title 9 inception, the who feeling of sports have changed in several universities. It seems in trying to make everyone happy we have forgotten that sometimes in life, you can't make everyone happy all the time.
ReplyDeleteTHIS! ^^^^
DeleteThere is PC and then there is stupid. What he ranted about was stupid. Not necessary, even if true. When advertisers get pissed you can consider it over the line and he is toast. He'll find work elsewhere but he is not welcome with the 49ers anymore. He is as good as done.
ReplyDeleteI thought he got a little cocky the last year or two however I don't wish a job loss on anyone. Now I guess I'll have to see what the rant was about.
ReplyDeleteWhat killed Damon on this was his lack of an apology Friday followed by the bad publicity from Deadspin, Awful Annoucing, and ESPN.
ReplyDeleteCBS Sportsradio, the 49ers, and Cumulus corp couldn't have been happy with the negative reports and being associated with the story as it grew and grew. My guess is if Damon's let go we'll see either CBS or NBC Sportsradio in the timeslot. Cumlus owns NBC and has the syndication deal with CBS.
I keep wondering if maybe this was Damon's grand plan and he wanted out of KNBR? It was just so strange how quickly things changed....as "LOLKNBRCallers" said...he was like he lost it and he was totally "off the tracks."
Why should he apologize if he thinks he's right?
DeleteThree things you do not do, especially in the Bay Area:insult gays, women, or minorities. To do so is cause for termination.
ReplyDeleteI insult minorities daily. In fact, I just insulted one 10 minutes ago in traffic. Its funny how the person that cuts you off or holds up traffic or bangs their cart into your cart in store or cuts you off...always seems to be Asian. Oh to be in the Bay Area.
DeleteAnd no one sees a problem with enforcing tolerence through intolerence? Wake-up people.
Delete10:46 I meant on the air or in print.
DeleteHe should have learned from his friend Larry and Felipe Alou...You can't tell the truth and expect to keep your job in this screwed up world. Especially here in the Bay Area with all the over sensitive people just waiting to cut you off at the knees
ReplyDeleteI think David Weintrub on KGO has been taking some shots at Damon without saying his name. Interesting if he'll be reprimanded for that!
ReplyDeleteI caught a bit of Weintraub last night. Talk about amateur hour! He picks ok subjects but then his faux outrage is obvious. I can hear his voice trembling at times. He's not ready for prime time. I know it is unfair to compare him to the legends they fired but it is impossible. It's like comparing a Van Gogh to the childish crayon scribbles of a 5 year old.
DeleteI wish I could have heard Damon's rant without Zennie's commentary. Damon may not be PC. If you don't like what he said, you don't have to listen to him. I don't know why he went off the way he did. I'm guessing he's tired of the Incognito/Martin reaction from the Martin defenders.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I don't envy Martin who had to go to work every day with a creep like Incognito and his apparently non-supportive coaches. I'm wondering whether there's more to the story than we have heard thus far. I don't like it when people project onto Martin how he should have reacted. It's not his fault that he is 6'5". Maybe he was raised not to get into fights. Maybe Incognito is a psycho-lunatic.
Bruce's initial reaction was (slight paraphrase) "who do you find more offensive: the bully or the quitter?" He had a lower opinion of the quitter.
DeleteThat Zennie character looked foolish with his constant interjecting.
DeleteHey buddy! You would have had more impact if you had given us a lead in and finally your commentary after the rant.
Instead you ruin the experience. Stay on cable TV.
I couldn't watch the clip with that guy constantly talking over the audio. Can we say ANNOYING?
ReplyDeleteDamon went on a psychotic rant a month or so ago about the government shutdown saying anyone who opposed the ACA and Obama must be a racist and then bragged about how awesome Obama is. He has constantly bashed anyone who is pro second amendment as a lunatic. I was offended by these comments. Did me, or any conservatives whine like little babies about it? No. That is free speech. I dealt with it. Progressives are always so touchy and out to get people who don't toe the line. Well, Damon, lie down with dogs, you get fleas. HA!
ReplyDeleteWow I knew none of this. Pro Obama....now I know there's something mentally wrong with him.
DeleteWhat did he say that isn't accurate? I know his "rant" wasn't PC but what opinion of his are we supposed to be upset about?
ReplyDeleteHis opinion was moronic. The "feminization of men?" That's pretty much the dumbest comment someone can make because not only isn't it true, but it doesn't mean anything. That's the comment a simplistic, moronic, typical jackass, wanna-be-alpha male says that is basically an effort to fish with dynamite/rally the idiots.
Delete9:51
DeleteSo you are calling yourself an idiot?
He needed to go back to the rust belt long ago. His talent is not up to major market levels. Some town of around 40,000 people is more his speed. Maybe let him announce some Friday night high school football games. Get him outta here!
ReplyDeleteDisagree with you. And I disagree with Damon often. But still his show is the best sports talk show on the air in the Bay Area, by far. I am a GiantsNiners fan and I still like his contrarian opinion. His audience is not bothered by his rantings whether we agree with him or not.
DeleteOh yeah, he can't hold a candle to the uber-talented Fitz and Brooks or Gary, not to mention the stunning skills of Ray Woodson, and Murph. The Bay Area was lucky to have Damon for as long as we did, and we are to blame for letting suck-asses rule to airwaves.
ReplyDeleteBruce is the only thing that moves the needle in bay area sports talk. Rest are dull, unprepared vanilla time killers.
DeleteIf he is fired, the Bay Area will lose it's only sports host with sack enough to say it like it is and entertain multiple viewpoints to enhance the discussion. The powers that be will be happy to get back to dealing with media-induced apathetic fanbases that can be more easily duped.
