SATURDAY NOTES
BatKid coverage was way over the top but in this case, that's good.
I mean, you have multitudes of things that happen for a reason. This little kid invigorated a city, a nation, even the world. What's not to like?
And a nod from the big guy.
I'm sure the journalism grotto will find fault with all the news organizations taking part in the kid's dream. So what. They complain about everything.
I was delighted to see the Gotham City Chronicle. (Someone made a joke: The GCC is better than the real paper.)
Phil Matier on KCBS about BatKid and how the city pulled it off: "It just happened." He said it about 15 times, but he's right. And kudos to afternoon anchor, Jeff Bell, who noted that it sometimes takes a year to fix a pothole in SF, but "today, (Friday), everything worked out great."

no one is going to complain.
ReplyDelete@10:13 actually one SF Supervisor complained. I can't remember his name but saw his face on the news...Asian guy. He made a valid point however he somewhat overlooked the overall good. He basically said why are we spending hundreds of thousands for the police protection, time, grandstand set up, etc. that could have went to the tens of thousands on food stamps and aid in the city. I can understand his point but I also think he overlooked the fact that it really energized people nationwide. Coast to coast people were talking batkid. The donation area of the make-a-wish foundation website went down from so many people worldwide trying to contribute yesterday. If anything, it was a huge plus overall. People need to refocus on others and stop worrying if they have the latest iphone. I long for the day when the Bay Area will go back to a place where you actually know your neighbor.
ReplyDeleteHis name is Eric Mar. KRON was the only news channel I saw who mentioned it or interviewed him about his comments. He sent a tweet with his comments about money and resources could have been spent on San Franciscans who are on public assistance. However during the interview he was back peddling and still pulling his foot out of his mouth at the same time. Very poor timing and even worse very poor taste to bring this to a public forum. Does he have any idea how much of the resources and personnel were donated? Or paid by the Make A Wish Foundation? I'm guessing he has no clue.....obvious by his insensitive comments.
DeleteI'm so proud San Francisco created this enchanting Make-A-Wish.
ReplyDeleteWish we could spread magic like this all across America!
The whole world is smiling.
Check out this from the UK:

P.S. Read the UK Comments.
ReplyDelete"This sort if thing only happens in America. Amazing people".
Too bad the "Big Guy" lied so he could cut off Batkid's doctor and treatment.
ReplyDeleteMay your keyboard spontaneously combust, 12:37 Anon. You need more reading, no breeding and certainly no public displays of your complete ignorance. KAPLOW!
DeleteLied? I don't think so...
DeleteNothing like Bush/Cheney who truly LIED us into War!
Count the Lies:

12:37 must be a shepherd....because he seems to have two liberal sheep following him....
DeleteTrue, barry is an accomplished liar second only to the clintons and purposely eroding the countries reputation and financial stability but kindly leave batkid out of it. You only get the ding a lings riled.
DeleteWow. Sweet. First moron mentions Obama, and then it devolves into this.
DeleteGet a life, dude.
I'm not very political, but hard to top these words, which have led to countless deaths. Don't kid yourselves.
Delete"The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa"
BatKid Coverage Was Way Over The Top And That's Good
ReplyDeleteYep, and I still couldn't get enough of it.
This was, and is the Best Feel Good Story of 2013...I am a proud native San Franciscan today, God Bless that little boy.
ReplyDeleteIf only. The number of people complaining in the comments of the CNN story about it was sad. I think it was a great story, and it doesn't hurt to have a little good news once in a while :)
ReplyDeleteI was amazed the little tyke made it through that long, long schedule without nap time or the obligatory tantrum. Good for him and everybody who made it happen. People were ready for a sweet story right about now. No need to wait til the Christmas Season to be touchy feely. T'was nice. I was stunned and happiliy relived that San Francisco authorities could do something this fun and this simple WITHOUT IT BEING TIED TO GENDER ISSUES IN ANY WAY. I'm all for supporting people in their diverse pursuits, but, once in a while let's stop and acknowledge the other important things in life are still here as well. The boy is in remission from Leukemia. How terrifying is that for a loving mom or dad? I recall the first time I even heard of that disease of the white blood cells. Back in, oh the 60s I think, my class had the read a book called "Death Be Not Proud". written by the dad of a boy who passed away from leukemia. I never forgot it. The boy's courage and natural joy helped his parents to deal with this most unexpected event.
ReplyDeleteThe San Francisco Supervisor is Eric Mar. He pooped on the party and.showed himself to be an extra special lemon sucker. Screw him
ReplyDelete12:37 Please provide proof that Obama cut off this kid's doctor and treatment. Yeah. Didn't think so. Try to enjoy a nice thing. Maybe your heart will even grow 3 sizes.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry if I sound like the ghost at the banquet, and I have no bad thing to say about the Batkid event itself, but the coverage of it did really bug me in a very direct way. I was home, ill and sleeping Friday morning, and was awakened by a helicopter roaring above my apartment house on Russian Hill. It was a chopper from Channel 7. It stayed there, driving me nuts, for an HOUR! For awhile there was another one from Channel 2, but it didn't stay too long. I wondered what kind of horrible disaster or public emergency had happened to justify that helicopter remaining there for an HOUR, making life pretty awful for anyone in the area. I later learned it was the coverage of Batkid. Way to go there, KGO. I'm sure there was no other way you could have covered the story, huh?
ReplyDeleteTypical NIMBY. Your poor life was slightly inconvenienced for an hour while a 5-year-old RECOVERING FROM LEUKEMIA was having the time of his young life, with thousands cheering him on. But, yeah, sorry about your sniffles asshole.
DeleteAre you related to Eric Mar? Hope you feel better cuz the entire world felt pretty good for this kid on Friday.
DeleteSo sorry to hear your peace and quiet was disrupted. Batkid's day started at 10am. well past the commute times. That must have been a horrific hour for you
DeleteI would be grateful if I could sleep until 10am on a Friday. I have half my work day in by then.
The boy himself put on such a great show. He was totally into being Batkid and was a great little actor...thrusting his five year old fist in the air in sync with Batman. I want to see a "Batman and the boy Batkid" movie!
ReplyDeleteI side with the supervisor in SF. God bless the "batkid" but this shit was way over the top. Whatever.
ReplyDeleteActually, "Death Be Not Proud" was about John Gunther, Jr, who died of a brain tumor, not leukemia.
ReplyDeleteThank you Martin, for that correction on the subject of "Death Be Not Proud". Amazing what time can do. I thought I recalled it correctly but did not. I think it stayed with me this long because it was the first time I ever read a parents' personal account of what their terminally ill child went through over a long period of time. It was not a quick death, nor inexpensive. John Gunther Sr. , if I'm correct was a prolific author. I enjoyed one of his books called "Procession", describing fourty years of American presidents he had known of and worked with at that time.
DeleteThe last 2 things SF has had national attention for is Damon Bruce and Tori Campbell. This one seems to have played out well for all involved.
ReplyDelete"BatKid coverage was way over the top..."
ReplyDeleteNot on KTVU.
While everyone else was buzzing about the feel-good story of the day, the 10 p.m. anchor was busy trying whip BART riders into a frenzy by invoking the specter of a possible strike. Even the season's first crab haul took precedence and by 10:30 p.m., BatKid still hadn't been covered.
How ironic that the supervisors last name is Mar, when the verb Marr means to smear or ruin by blurring.
DeleteHow come we haven't heard from Stan complaining that BatKid is white. Normally Stan complains about preferential treatment of non-minorities.
