KGO Radio Talk Hostess Maureen Langan Has No Idea Who Oscar Grant Is

From a reader:

KGO talk host, Maureen Langan does not know who Oscar Grant is. From her show; Sunday Night, Monday Morning.

About 12:40 a.m. (Sunday night/Monday morning) Maureen was doing a segment with a movie critic/columnist about new movies, and the guest told Maureen she was really looking forward to "Fruitvale Station."  Maureen asked her what it was about.  She gave Maureen a quick summary of the plot and it became apparent Maureen was lost.  She asked the guest whether the movie was a true story.  The guest said it was the story of Oscar Grant, to which Maureen replied, "I don't know who Oscar Grant is."  The guest proceeded to tell her.

Oy.

Why am I not surprised?

  1. "...true story..", we'll see.

  2. Even if somehow, she had no idea who Oscar Grant was or what this movie is about, she could have at least did a little bit of research before the interview. One click on google would have filled her in. Embarrassing, if true.

  3. A supposedly local show/host, but broadcasting from NYC, I'm not surprised at all by her ignorance. At least Karel knows who Oscar Grant is. You guys rag on him all the time but he knows bay area stuff.

    1. Here you go:

      Opens this Friday.

Langan "hangs" around her place in New Jersey / New York and phones in the show most weeks. When she's on the road doing west coast swings (Stockton, etc.) she does the show from KGO or KABC in LA.

  5. I remember the story very well. I suppose Ms. Langdon is either not from the Bay Area, (this is, after all, a local story), or in her other life, before radio hosting, she was not known to be a news hound like most of us here. Let's not forget, the average person is not that hooked on the news, yet they lead fully and presumably happy lives. I felt sorry for that young Police Officer, cant recall his name. The man comes from a family of cops. What's he doing now, I wonder? I recall the captive officer as someone who made a mistake, but truly sees his role in life as that of a police officer protecting the public. He may have to change his name, or move to, I dunno, Walnut Creek or someplace far out.

    1. Yup, local story just like the 4 OPD cops that got gunned down a few years ago. Where's their movie?

    2. I feel sorry for the young father who was shot and killed on a BART station platform while his hands were behind his back. Unfortunatly, Oscar Grant can't change his name and move to Walnut Creek.

    3. The irony of ironies ... several times, now, she has laid stake to the claim of "journalist for many many years." She has shown up on MSNBC the same as Stephanie Miller showing up on CNN. That's not journalism. She's a second or third tier stand up comedian like Karel.

    4. Somebody took it on themselves to make a movie about Oscar Grant. The killing of the 4 officers were tragic, as was the death of Oscar Grant. If someone decided to make a movie about the 4 officer, and they did it good job, I'm sure we would hear about it.

  6. Well, I don't know who Maureen Langan is. And it sounds like she's nobody worth paying attention to.

  7. She's a Jared Hart selection. While Paul Hosley was busy reinventing KGO, Hart was busy reinventing talk radio. Think it's working?

This is as embarrassing as it could possibly get for a KGO host. Next thing you know she'll say, "I don't know what an airplane is. Tell me more."

    Nobody cares!

  9. Shouldn't a talk show host at least scan the news section daily for their locale? Seems quite out of touch regarding Bay Area news and events. Sad.....

  10. How do you not know? How do you not get rid of someone for that alone? It just shows how out of touch you are with the city you're doing radio in. It's not like this person is a national host. KGO has had a lot of embarrassments the last couple of years. This might be the biggest.

  11. Exactly. How do you not know?

It's a sad day when Long Beach Karel knows a story and a former FBI profiler does not.

  12. No, she (Langan) is not a former FBI profiler. That was another woman on "ID" TV. Maureen Langan is a, still, standup comedian who shuffles to KGO or broadcasts when "on the road" via WABC in New York directly to KGO or to KABC when in the LA area. She may, by now, even be doing it by ISDN like Karel is from his Long Beach abode.

I heard the same thing and I was appalled. This is why stand up comedians (both Karel and Langan) make poor excuses for "younger demo" talk show hosts.

  13. Why is anyone surprised that 'the NY Witch' knows nothing about what is going on in the bay area? Cumulus is too cheap to hire local talent, so they go outside the market and find this shrill, know it all imbecile who is not even a good comedy act. This is what Cumulus is all about these days folks, so get used to it!

    1. do all their weekenders make the same money or are some under contract? she has to be as cheap as they come. she must know someone at the station because she is just not a talk radio person at all. maybe she is connected to someone in nyc who works for cumulus? pat thurston has her moments, and i think monty isn't nearly as bad as people say he is, but the rest of them are pretty weak and that includes ronn owens. it's a pretty weak lineup top to bottom and youre probably right about them not spending money.

    2. Looks like KGO is going to find it's next talk host as part of a promotion!

      Comedy Night!!!

  14. Perhaps people in the area aren't paying attention, but Rich has mentioned it many times, and so have many of the people who have posted here on his blog.

The problem is Cumulus and companies like Cumulus who have taken over American commercial radio, and are ruining it.

They haven't got a clue as to how to program, or efficiently run a station. They are very lucky at KNBR, because the Giants, Niners and Warriors are all now in the middle of a 'Golden Age,' (well, the Giants were until this year!) so they've a lot of people listening to their programs anyway.

But what Cumulus has done with its bay area stations is no different to what they're doing in other major markets where they own stations. They are downsizing, dumbing down, and basically destroying what had been some venerable outlets that people in those communities had made a part of their lives for years.

The US Government deserves much of the credit for the demise of radio, as they passed the 1996 Communications Act which allowed big companies such as Cumulus, Clear Channel, Infinity and others to swoop in and buy as many stations as they could per market.

Everybody is so shocked by what Cumulus did with KGO, but I guess they weren't paying much attention when Cumulus bought KNBR several years before. Within minutes of them being named new owners, they went a froth of media baron zeal and immediately fired more than a dozen long time employees. Two or three of dozen more were sent packing within the next year, and most of their jobs were either downsized, or given to pimply-faced youngsters who are now over worked, being paid peanuts and given lousy benefits.

America gets what it deserves if it continues to not pay attention to what is going on. Elect officials who make disastrous decisions such as passing the Communications Act, and this is the kind of radio we get. We have only ourselves to blame!
