KCBS overtakes KQED

Here are the full numbers

  1. I see KOIT is taking the town by storm after firing all the seasoned veterans because they were too old and expensive.

    1. KOIT isn't the same after the firing of these great talents. Even the station's holiday ratings are decreasing. Entercom made a huge mistake firing these wonderful on-air personalities.

    2. I love it when stations ratings go down after they fire their veteran talent. They deserve the failure.

    3. Who got let go?

  2. Why is Cumulus listed as owning KNBR but Susquehanna Radio listed as owning KTCT?

    1. Because Cumulus purchased the assets and intellectual property of Susquehanna Radio long ago and kept the licensee the same, though is fully under the Cumulus umbrella.

  3. It has been trendy for many to take shots at KGO since their format change, and I include myself as a former loyal listener in that group. Having said that it surprises me that they have not gained any ground on KCBS going head to head with them. It seems KCBS has not missed a beat and that must be discouraging for the folks at KGO who probably had little to no imput into the descisions that were made.

  4. What's going on with KSFO? How could their numbers be so low when they have Sean Hannity, Mark Levin and Michael Savage, who is arguably the right-wing Howard Stern of the Bay Area?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Because Hannity and Levin are terrible radio hosts who don't get ratings anywhere. All they do is clear commercial spots.

  5. With PPM's though, all it means is that the meter clicks each time it hears a station. A couple of days ago people mentioned how they tune in to KCBS for a few minutes to hear traffic but then tune out. That may get lots of clicks on the PPM, but if people don't listen long enough to hear the advertisements, then the high numbers are misleading as to whether people are really actually listening to the station all that much.

I quit KGO when they destroyed it and now listen to KQED and listen for the whole hour, not flipping around the dial. How many listen to KCBS all day, or even for several hours a day?

So the high numbers to me don't really represent how many real listeners (not just hearers) KCBS has.

    1. Ah...the PPM does differentiate by the amount of time someone listens...cume is everyone who listens for at least 5 minutes...then those listeners are broken down by their time spent listening...

KCBS is not designed for all day listening...say 8-10 hours continuously...most music stations aren't either.

But I am fairly confident that the average KCBS listener listens between 45 minutes to 90 minutes a day...and that is very good for a news station

PPM is not perfect...but a far far superior system of measurement than diaries, which didn't reflect actual listening, were based on recall, and more "loyalty" to said station/brand..then use of it.

    2. Hahaha..sounds like you work for Arb. PPM is flawed, as it measures what someone is "exposed" to, and not necessarily what they actually may listen to. If someone walks into a retail store with a PPM on them, and that store has say...KCBS on...the PPM will pick up KCBS. That is why the PPM world that we are in is better than before...., but not a "superior" one.

    3. If you are trying to parse my words to make a point, you support almost to a "T" what I state....

Being exposed to...as in actually hearing a station and having it recorded in a measurement, is much better than a diary or any system based on recall...as most diary keepers do not have their diaries with them 24/7 and usually fill them out at the end of the diary period, and often have a "head of household"/influencer who helps the other fill theirs out...as it used to be that Arbitron would ask a household how many folks in said house are over 12, and then sent out that number of diaries.

Best video on diary measurement was "A Day in the Life of a Diary Keeper" back in 1990...was sent out by Birch (long gone) who did call out for their rating measurements and showed how flawed Arbitron's methodology was.

Flaws with the PPM, like a diary:

Some don't always have it with them...and to your point, they walk into a store playing a station, does that mean they are listening? I see TV's on at Best Buy, doesn't mean I am watching/consuming them.

So we both agree PPM is not perfect, but much better than diary keeping.

  6. Rich called it early on and has been proven correct once again. Gil Gross on 910am just doesn't move the needle. That station came in at number 20 again. They need to either go all syndication or all local. This hybrid formula of some local with mostly national hosts just does not work. Also Gil also needs to rethink his talk format. Monologues work if you are a master broadcaster like Limbaugh or Savage. A bore like Gil is better sticking to a topic, taking calls and bringing in occasional guests. Finally, leave the wife at home Gil. Sheesh.

  7. KKSF is posting an ad for a job opening which has to be producer for Gil's show. There are so many good people looking for work, but they are seemingly not responding to anyone. I had a friend of mine ask about the job, but she said the "job was already filled...this is just an EOE posting." I hate when companies do that because I search the ad pages every day for work, and I rarely get a response back.

Gil could use a real producer, and not to say I'm the best producer or radio employee around, but maybe that could be the difference in his show. I've always liked the show, so it would be nice to hear back regarding the opening. I'm not holding my breath.

But if they were going to hire a producer for Gil it would seem somewhat crazy to let him choose the person in the first place since he's not doing very well as is. Just my 2 cents.

  8. @ 9:30 "master broadcaster like Limbaugh or Savage."

    WTH?

Gil "bores" you. I can see why.

    1. Whatever you may think of their politics, Savage and Limbaugh are great radio broadcasters. They can go on long monologes and be highly entertaining. Not Gil. Gil's show on KGO was very good. He stuck to a topic for a whole hour. The first half hour he would introduce the topic and usually interview an expert, in the second half hour he would take tons of calls. Now he changes topics several times an hour and hardly takes calls. Bringing in the wife on the show on Fridays is very unprofessional. It'd be like going to a Giants game and suddenly you see Buster Posey's wife in the outfield. WTF!?

    2. I think your analogy at the end is fundamentally flawed. Women don't play men's baseball. Women do play radio.

    3. Then Rhoda should get her own show. I'm sure Gil does not show up at her concerts to sing back up. Use your head Chris...

    4. As a trained attorney Christine's logic sure is flawed. If an architect is married to a garbage man would you want the garbage man to design your house? By the same token, if I tune in to listen to an allegedly professional radio broadcaster, why would I want to hear his wife? Is radio so bad now that the only requirement to get on air is that you sleep with the host? Christine, some people enjoy your show and your affinity for dogs (not me), however I doubt any of your fans would appreciate you bringing your pitbull to be your side kick just because it belongs to you.

    5. You should really get a life if you think that Gil, Rush and Michael are all that. Are you saying that we should put them up on Mt Rushmore??? Gill is as boring anything. Please....if Gil was all that, then he would still be on KGO with his bud...Ronnnnnnnnnn!

    6. dear 9:18..the analogy which I found flawed, compared Buster Posey's wife playing baseball with him to Gil's wife being occasionally on the radio with Gil. Once more, with feeling, women don't play professional men's baseball. Women are allowed to play radio, thus the analogy is flawed. I made no judgment about the quality of the latter pairing. Additionally," pit bull" is two words as is German shepherd. I have both. One of the best radio bits I ever did(as Gene Burns told me) was my "interview" with Hector, one of the rescued Michael Vick dogs. good day.

    7. I enjoy Gil Gross' show. I usually get a cup of coffee at 4:00 and then just listen to Gill shoot the shit. It's good local content.

    8. The analogy is correct. Buster Posey's wife is unqualified to play pro baseball in the same way Rhoda Gross is unqualified to host a radio program and your dogs to practice law. The only reason there aren't women playing baseball is they haven't found a left hander who can throw 100mph...

    9. Dear 11:34, constructing analogies is not your strong suit. In any event, your lazy and inapt comparison of women to canines reveals more about your own misogyny and lack of wit than you are smart enough to realize.Pity.

      good day

    10. Funny you say that Chrissie since you are the horse's ass who interviewed a dog on the radio. The hairspray over use obviously is affecting your brain cell count. Have a lovely evening dear!
PS: only you would inject stale women's liberation vitriol in to a simple analogy...

    11. The dog was present for the interview and was described in detail by a representative from Bad Rap in Oakland..www.badrap.org. ABC 7 was there to also interview Hector . Hector did a pit smile, rolled on his back, sang a little, and then fell asleep. Leslie Nuccio of Bad Rap described what the federal agents had told Bad Rap about Mr. Vick's specific involvement in the killing and torture of dogs and how a federal judge made it possible for Hector to be with us on KGO. It was great radio, actually and several television networks similarly did the story.
In any event, I don't use hairspray. Only a misogynist would call a woman "vitriolic" for insisting that she is human. I'm neither a "dear" nor a "chrissie". We already know that you can't construct an analogy. Now we know you can't spell either. "overuse" is one word, not two.
      good day

    12. Women don't play MLB because they can't. If one could she would be on a team. If she could hit .284, 17 HRs, and player 2nd base, no doubt she'd be on the team. We're not even talking about a star here. So the analogy is actually correct since after all, his wife sucks on air. But the bigger issue is he's not very good, and I doubt anyone at KKSF is going to do anything about changing that.

  9. I like Gil as a person, but even when he was on KGO he often would choose subject I didn't care about, but his format was better then.
Now he jumps from subject to subject, he talks too much without really saying anything, he tells too many weird stories, that I couln't care less about i.e. dum criminals etc. also seems like his dum criminal segment is much longer than it use to be. I was off work friday and thought he would do an in depth hour or more on President Obama's trip to Israel and Jordan. Would have loved to hear John Rothman on that. I hate to see anyone loose their job, but I really think John Rothman would do better. However I seem to in the minority, guess the station is trying to appeal to a more superficial crowd. The morning show on KSFO is a disgrace, never agreed with Lee Rogers or Melanie on much, but the show was professional, I could listen. Now it is a carciture of what it use to be, the fake laughter, fake voices, weird shreiks, everything about that show is just awful. Does anyone know why when they do promotion for the show they mention Brian Sussman, Katie Green and Melanie, shouldn't Melanie get 2nd billing? Did she get demoted? As for master's of story telling I can listen to Savage, when he is not talking politics, or is hateful, cannot listen to Rush. Of course the master of great story telling and monolog is Gene Burns, who we most likely will not hear on the radio again

  10. Gil tries to sound smarter than he is, and his show is pretty boring. The pauses, the "aaah" and "uhhh", it all sounds lame. At this point of his career he's a mid-market morning show guy who has a partner, or a newscaster. He'll never move the needle if it's up to his own self to do so. He needs someone telling him how to be better, and I'm guessing that person is not employed at KKSF.

    1. Perfectly said, Gil Gross and his boring story telling is like the prototypical uncle or coworker whose long winded stories put everyone to sleep. He really thinks he is hysterically funny and fascinating. Sorry Gil, you're neither and your ironic pauses do not improve your stories, just more aggravating.

  13. KNBR is lucky to have the Giants, as the spring and summer numbers will jump appreciably as soon as opening day arrives. Without them they'd be just another run of the mill sports operation like 'the Game' which is not even worth listening to unless the A's are on.
Most of sports talk radio is a desert, unless Damon Bruce or Greg Papa, or Marty Lurie are on.

  14. Bay Area broadcast radio is a total disaster. That being said, attention should be paid to KGO's lively Karel. I disagree with many of his views, but he's never boring. The same cannot be said for the rest of KGO's moldy 1970's lineup. KSFO went to the dogs ages ago. Back in the day, they interacted well with all levels of the Bay Area demographic on serious issues, whether you agreed with opinions expressed or not. Their only current show host with a brain is Barbara Simpson. Too bad she's mired in John Birch-style politics.
