Monday Media Notebook

*The other figure in the would-be joint effort to get a portion of some of the pre-KGOne  players back into a new property, (on FM, maybe) is a local broadcast impresario who has the money and organization.

Whether that translates into a deal is anyone's guess. We will know in the coming months.

*That alleged talk host, based in Long Beach can deny, deny all he wants about his dissing words of fellow host, Pat Thurston--he said 'em. Not only did Thurston know, but almost all of his minions did too. The red carpet Rupert Pupkin is a walking contradiction: he rails that the gay press ignores him. That he hates being referred to as "KGOne's openly gay host", yet brings up his sexuality almost every minute and embellishing it by stating that "I got laid last night." Putz.

And his supposed "contract?" That doesn't mean anything more, Rupert, unless it's a personal services deal and you ain't got that...And how delicious that your bosses told you not to mention my name. I guess "this little blog" has made its way into the Bungey mansion. Was Bungey invited to your red carpet show down in El Lay?

*The robotic mattress man still hasn't publicly said a word over the shakedown. Maybe he and Copey are devising plans to form a new two-man show: "Not a genuine combo."

*Vern Glenn, KPIX weekend sports anchor, working the Niners-Minn. Friday night game on the sideline did a pre-game report and called PBP-guy, Dennis O'Donnell, "Gary." Uh, oops. We'll give Vern a mulligan on that one.

*My policy on comments to this blog? No official policy. You get real, real personal and take it down a dark road, no, I won't pub it. Obscenities are OK as long as they aren't real gross. This isn't Mayberry. As far as some that border on the questionable taste dept., it's hit and miss. I'll make the decision. It's my place.

*KPIX: Don't make lots of money and get a little nervous if the head cheese doesn't like you. Unless of course you have leverage and viewers. To be fair, the latest move was not directly under the auspices of  D.R.--that was a combo special from CBS NY corporate.

*The Three Stooges: Paul Hosely, Bungey and Jared Hart.

*The KGOne cume in the July book: MIA.

*"Celebrity Chef, Ryan Scott." --Yeah, cooking on radio makes a lot of sense. Then again, it beats the hell out of Montemanure --"EIGHT-ZERO-EIGHT-ZERO EIGHT TEN!" ...and the NY witch comedienne who must be in possession of serious compromising pictures. Talk about torture.

  1. Geraldo Rivera's show debuts today on 45 Cumulus stations...with 15 more in the next few months. Any word on Geraldo replacing Ronn when his contract is up?

    1. It won't happen. KGO would sooner replace Ronn with news than put Geraldo in that slot.

    2. Please print this won't happen response and tape it to your monitor. My guess is Ronn doesn't make it to the end of his contract.

    3. I'm fairly certain Ronn's last day is August 31, Geraldo Rivera will begin airing in the KGO 9am slot beginning Monday Sept 3.

@10:46 have you been asleep for the last 9mos? of course cumulus replace Ronn with one of their syndicated programs.

  2. Ryan Scott was off air this past Saturday which made for an ok show. Walcoff does good work and I was reminded of his news talk shows in the past. Very solid. As to Scott, he is what is wrong with the current Celebrity chef craze. It is all about self promotion. When he is on the show, it consists of him talking about his restaurants or having his buddies come in to promote their restaurants. Ryan Scott and the flamboyant Joel Riddel are neck and neck on food show awfulness. One is a shameless self promoter and the other is a trade out extraordinaire.

  3. Walcoff does nothing for me.

Ronn Owens is even derivative of himself today: another guest who is a white, middle aged, liberal Jewish male.

So you present feedback from readers at your own discretion and have no obligation publish to present posts that disagree with your personal opinion? There is no pretense of editorial neutrality?

    3. Dean,
Newspapers distinguish between news and editorial opinion. When they publish reader's letters(or other communications, these days), they attempt to present a representative sample, not just the ones that they agree with.

My point is that since Rich is not attempting to publish a representative sampling of reader's feedback, he needs to make that fact known, as he just has. Otherwise he creates a distorted picture about the extent of consensus with his own personal agenda.

Ultimately it's clear that this is not journalism.

  5. Interesting days. Greg Jarrett apparently found an old KGO business card and posted, it on FB, lamenting the demise. I jumped in a number of times and a soldier in the Hosely army jumped in telling me not to believe everything I read from blogging trolls. I let her know that my ill informed views were completely my own. Should have asked who she meant by trolls....but....oh never mind. Just a little amusement.

Hit it, dude. You aren't being forced to read this blog, the nonsense, the fact or the speculation. You're off to the cosmos.

Cooking on the radio wouldn't go over so well, but food and restaurant talk can be great - a la Gene Burns' "Dining Around" (Joel Riddell's version I can take in small doses only, unfortunately - his style of allthewordsallthetimeincasetheyrunout and those words containing too much about him and what he knows is super annoying to me). Ryan and Rich do have too many restaurant pluggers, but they're still entertaining and informative enough for me to tune-in when I'm driving around on Saturdays.

  13. To the dochebag threatening Rich... the Constitutional right of Free Speech is very strong.

Second, if you are a public figure, its even tougher for such a person to sue.

Thirdly, Rich and any potential poster would have to post something incredibly wild, irresponsible, and with an intent to do harm, to possibly face any consequences. And all these things would have to be proven. Plus, don't forget 1 and 2.

  14. Hey 11:26 and 11:42...get off your high horse! In case you haven't been paying any attention....this is a BLOG...that means that people can post what they want to, and do so with impugnity.

As far as Rich being out of control with his rants and publishing only those postings he wants to publish, I don't think his rants are that extreme...rather they reflect the frustration and sadness many of us who love radio have experienced in recent years with the dumbing down and downsizing of radio.

As far as Rich being sued in the future? That's a joke! There
are no laws on the books that tell bloggers that they have to restrict their remarks, (unless of course some one threatens another person with bodily harm, but in those cases, the post isn't publishing anyway.)

You obviously don't like these postings because they strike a chord with you. I'm wondering if the person who is responding is someone who actually thinks that what is happening today in local radio is a good thing. Perhaps another imbecilic little Cumulus troll on the loose!

  16. Rich is absolutely legally wrong. There have been lawsuits filed against bloggers who "select" anonymous comments. In those cases the courts ruled that bloggers who "choose" or "select" comments for repost that are libelous or slanderous are in the wrong. In recent articles Rich openly admits to his "legally stupid" editorial policies. Since "Good-Old Rich" selects the posts (who does and does not get posted) and he does not allow rebuttal or correction, he is legally accountable for everything on the site. To the legal genius who wrote "There
are no laws on the books that tell bloggers that they have to restrict their remarks" - you are dead wrong. Rich is responsible because of his editorial policies. Yeah, all you people who like to wade waist deep in the Rich Lieberman sewer, come to his defense. He's dead meat if he ever gets sued. Ask a REAL communications lawyer. Bloggers cannot post whatever they like - randomly select false and slanderous posts from anonymous contibutors. My guess is most of the "Keep up the good work Rich" response are from Rich himself. Keep up the wonderful work Big-guy.. We are watching.. but not because what you do is good.

    2. As a former publisher and editor, 2:19 is absolutely correct. Here is what makes a case of libel:
      1) what is stated is false
      2) what is stated is reckless disregard for the truth
      3) what is stated is stated with malicious intent.

If Rich were to allow a post meeting those three conditions, and if it could be proved that he denied a post or posts that refuted the libelous post that was published, he could lose a libel case, and the person making the post could be sued.

That said, have fun proving malicious intent. Very rare in America.

And if it is said about a public official or persona, that person has almost zero recourse.

On the other hand, if Rich published all comments, regardless of his personal opinion of them, current court rulings regarding online opinion is not as strict as, say, a letter to the editor, and I doubt Rich would lose.

I hope that changes, however. I hope that some day, the Supreme Court applies the same laws to online communications that it applies to newspapers, magazines, books, etc.

The problem is that Rich could win and still be put in the poor house if someone or something sued.

    3. The lawsuit threats are just a bunch of sad sack schills attempting to intimidate Rich. Who would sue Rich? Brian Copeland made a not so veiled threat that Matress Man might sue. You think Lowenstein is ready to fork over $250k to a loyah? Puhleaaaase. A move like that would further damage Matress Man's self-inflicted soiled reputation....

      Delete
    4. True, 7:27. I was just outlining what is required to successfully make a case of defamation with the three criteria I pointed out above.

That said, some companies and persons have brought lawsuits not to win, but to cost the other party a ton of money.

That is way more likely than a case being successful. That said, I don't think a company would waste its time, but it is possible.

Mattress Man has no recourse. Copeland has no recourse. Karel has no recourse.

As to what Rich allegedly said that was allegedly libelous, I must have missed that.

I agree: hot air by incompetents. Since many here are supposed to be media professionals, I can see that many did not take media law or perhaps they didn't have a professor worth his or her worth (common in J schools; they who can't, teach.)

  17. 6:57 - what you are saying may be true, but unless Rich is living on Nob Hill smoking a cigar and quaffing a $200 Cab right now, what purpose would Ronn have in paying $400 an hour to sue him? On top of that, the rep that has taken a big hit, would take a bigger one... Million Dollar Mattress Man goes after Man-of-the-People blogger. Yuck.

Rich might be what they call "Judgement proof".

  18. Keep writing in you Cumulus trolls! Your comments are always good for a laugh. It's just sad that all of you have no appreciate or understanding about what radio used to represent and what it stood for. Now it stands for C-R-A-P, becauase peons such as you, who would nefer have been hired back in the day are the norm and professional sounding announcers are thrown out of the biz because they are making too much money. That's like the big leagues getting rid of top playing stars because they're making too much money. Solid, professional announcers are the face and sound of your station, and if you hire dim-wits and dolts 9uch as the kind who have been hired lately, especially by Cumulus), you're going to lose your core audience as well as your advertising revenue. Smart thinking!

What would you direct the employees working there to do?

I have a good friend who works there, have been reading this blog regularly the last couple months, and am surprised by some of the commentary.

I do not have a real horse in this race, although I would like to see talk radio be better. That being the case, what is your expectation of the people working there? Should they quit? Mutiny? Yell at their bosses? Get fired?

If any of you are radio professionals, surely you would be the first people submitting resumes after these people dug their own graves, no? And if you then got the job, what would you do differently?

Jebbie went on his PR Rant about his fugly Stadium in Santa Clara, and how the fog was rolling in, and its August. Then Lil Man Glenn said, "now that I'm thawed out," after the preseason game, during his report on Saturday afternoon. Vern ur butt has been working at the Stick for years, so you "know" its cold & foggy at the Stick...so duh! I tell ya, I'm going to die laughing my ass off when all these folks find out what a disaster the Santa Clara Stadium really is.

Heads up, the 49ers won 5 Super Bowls in SF, and at the stadium that you loathe.
